When was hong Kong independent?
It was virtually until 1997 (while a colony, it was widely counted and regarded as a country by itself; it has its own currency, Internet TLD, government etc - more than one could say about Scotland or Wales, for instance...). Part of Britain, yet still its own. After the Chinese takeover it has lost so much of that uniqueness and sense of independence, IMO, and has been reduced to a "Special Administrative Region." :\

The Soviet Union.
They were the perfect storybook bad guys. Their suckage didn't even need explaining to most readers, and it wasn't a problem when books and movies went over the top with the evil plans as long as some Soviet Commie was blamed for the problem.
Most perfect was the fact that nobody seemed to get sick of Soviet bad guys in books or movies. So when writing a book, if you couldn't think up an imaginative new bad guy, all you had to do was stick some Soviet agent into the plot and you were set. If you later thought up something more original, it was a simple matter to just shoot or blow up the agent, and have diplomatic pressure (or a prisoner exchange, something along those lines) be applied to kill their Evil Program (and that branch of the storyline), which would explain the lack of further Soviets in the story.
China's Communist, so some authors use them now, but they just don't have the same effect as the old Evil Empire.

Yugoslavia. Now the whole region is a powder keg again, a la pre-World War I, and the people there are more than happy to act on their ethnic hatreds. Tito wasn't a nice guy, what with the murderous dictator bit, but at least he kept the ethnic tensions down, and didn't bow down to the USSR. Then again, it doesn't help either that NATO's pasttime in the 90's was to randomly bomb the region and leave things worse than they were before.

I miss the Soviet Union, especially before the warmonger Ronald Reagan. Back before Reagan and his attack on progressives, the Soviet Union, while it had it's flaws showed that Another World was possible.
It caused the US to act more responsibly. One thing that the Soviet Union always had over the US was that the US has always had uninsured, but the Soviet Union gave everyone free healthcare!
Many people don't realize that Soviet citizens had so many rights that most Americans can't even dream about, especially if you are poor. :(

Of course, in order to be classified as having 100% literacy I seem to recall that you only need to show that you have a 95% literacy rate (or similar number) due to margins of error.

Read what I wrote again.
I didn't talk about capitalist regimes but rather a regime (singular).
I am of the opinion that the current drive of capitalism will result in the ultimate ecological destruction of the world as we know it and the end of humanity sooner rather than later. Does it intend to do so? No, I don't believe so, rather it is a byproduct of its worldview.
Of course, we can leave the debate concerning the USA and its treatment of the aborigines, and whether the US would have qualified as capitalist at that point in history, for another time.

I see. I apologize for my misunderstanding.
Your viewpoint, now that my interpretation has been corrected, is much more understandable to me. I too agree that if left to its own devices, catastrophe will be the result of our current capitalistic system, but it is my hope that prudent control and regulatory action by civil governments will be able to avert global ecological disaster within our century.
Wishful thinking on my half perhaps, but it is what I hope.
