Worst book to movie adaptation?

The shitty book thread got me thinking. Is there a book that you love and endear that was turned into the biggest crap filled movie you have ever seen?

or just a book you hate that turned into a movie you hated even more so than the book....

One that sticks out like a sore thumb in my mind was that great expectations movie with ethan hawke. The book was meh, but that movie was a 2 hour piece of unrelentless garbage. I'm sure there are much worse, but thats all i can think of.

Also bram stokers the mummy with lou gosset jr....

I know as the posts continue i will be able to think of more.

Dare I say it? Starship Troopers. Great book. I refuse to acknowledge the movie of the same name.

Starship Troopers, Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire - they cut out all of the encounter scenes in the maze to add a 15 minute fight scene with the dragon that never happened. Tanked the movie for me.

For all the debate over Blade Runner, few comment on the fact that neither the original, nor the "Directors Cut" have most of the plot points or even a better ending than the original Philip K. Dick novel.

That ending was far superior.

Starship Troopers, Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire,

The Goblet was bad indeed

Never read the Starship Troopers book, should I?

The B.A. thing gave me the creeps, indeed

The Relic, great book, horrific movie. They changed nearly everything and kept a few character names.

Also, dark works in a book where you're describing things, but in a movie it's reduced to just crappy.

Oh yeah, hated that one. Every time that little one stumbled into the picture, all I wanted to do was punch her in the face. Don't know why, but that's what I wanted to do...

Goblet is too long a book to do as one movie, even The Philosopher's Stone I think they cut to much out of, they could have done Goblet as 2 movies, they would have made more money that way, and they could have torn less pages out of the book, everyones happy. Yes the dragon fight was bad, but also it's a movie about a school... where's the schooling?

Definitely. A lot of times a movie is ruined by the DARK, SUSPENSEFUL MYSTERY!!! (!!!!) you just sit there going, figure it out already! If I was the main character, this movie would have ended an hour ago!

Aye, that was stupid, made it look like all they did was that tournament and then that ball. Why couldn't they have done it in a more Unreal Tournament kinda feel? Much more exciting IMO.

Or they could have just made a long ass movie instead of pretending all movies have to be two and a half hours.

Anything Stephen King. I'm a huge old school Stephen King fan, but what the Networks did to The Stand and It was attrocious. And there was really nothing gained from the changes they made.

Personally, I didn't think Lion witch and wardrobe was THAT bad. Not living up to the standards of the book, and the acting was slightly cheesy and annoying, but it wasn't too bad a movie. Still a reasonably entertaining experience.

Going to have to agree on the Harry Potter movies. I mean, the books aren’t great works of literatures in the first place, but they are at least novel and entertaining. The movies were absolutely insulting.

i still think harry potter should have done what lord of the rings did.

bring out one version in the theatres and then bring out the 2hour + extra footage version on DVD.

in fact all epics like that should be that way. thats why lotr won so many damn awards among other reasons of course.

Congo is atleast a decent movie. If absolutely absurd. If you've never read the book it's a decent flick.

If you have read the book you're wondering who this stupid bint is they named Ross is. The book version was much better.

Lost world, gah. That about sums it up.

Timeline I've not seen, though the book was not spectacular.

Andromeda, a movie every bit as horrid as the book.

Pffft...Great story, great book, and nice, really really nice script. BUT...

The ambient and cinema weren't that great. As far as I remember, one of the vikings sports a gladiator helmet and the chief (Buliwyf) sports a 1450' armor. Nice sountrack, although

The Hunt for Red October is a rather good book. Unfortunately, the movie missed a lot of the plot from the book and was really, for me at least, a huge disappointment.

The LotR trilogy is also a rather bad adaptation. A far too great emphasis on those dratted pointy-eared *bib* as well as the complete betrayal of Faramirs character really destroyed it for me.
However, I will admit that those books are very hard to do properly on the silver screen. They are simply too long and too boring. So, taken as just movies, the trilogy was actually rather good. But as an adaptation they stank…
