Have you seen one for real????

The question is rather typical: Have you or have you NOT seen a tornado in real life??
You may also share any tornado pictures you have, whether you've taken them or not.
This thread is also for discussion, dissection, slander, debate, and talk about tornadoes.
Of course I reall don't have much to say here. I mean in this forum post.
Only an idiot would try to look at one.
That said I've been through four. Though three of them were simultanious.

I've seen a couple of them in my lifetime. Neat lookin' things ... all windy and gray. I always wanted to be a storm chaser, but I'm lazy.
I have not. We don't get them in this part of the world.

Windy.
The most interesting thing aside from the noise is the dramatic drop in pressure, hurts my ears.

Even though they are mostly in the Great Plains, tornadoes can happen anywhere, anytime.

the storms associated with tornados are the greatest, when there is a tornoda warning i like standing outside on the porch and watching the sky turn really dark and just watch the power the storm has. it is truely an amazing thing of nature to watch.

I used to chase them, it was cool
I never really got into a "dangerous" situation chasing, we usually stayed on the back side of them, got some hail damage (me, and my truck) and stuff but not really any thing you could attribute directly to the tornado, debris mostly.
I have survived 4 direct hits to my house when I wasn't chasing.
As much of a rush it was to chase tornados for some reason once I got pregnant I just didn't want to go do it anymore..... weird...

One went right down my street a while ago. It took off countless roofs and uprooted a bunch of trees. There were leaves piled two feet high in my backyard.

i saw one once when driving down the highway towards scottsbluff nebraska.
it wasnt a typical funnel so we looked at it for a while before we decided that it was indeed a tornado. it was a fold in the grey sky, seemingly from top to bottom, like a fold in a grey curtain.
we didnt know what we should do since we were in the middle of nowhere with no shelter but the dip on the side of the highway. we drove on.
when we got to scottsbluff it had gone through the neighborhood we were staying in.

no, cuz thereare no tornados in Europe.
I haven't seen a tornado but one did hit about a mile away from our house in the Montgomery- Cincinnati back on April 9th, 1999. It was a mile wide F3/F4, killed several people and ruined a bunch of houses and the Johnson Nature Preserve. There might be some old articles on the Cincinnati Enquirer website if you're interested.
Ironically, we never heard the tornado siren because my genius of a brother thought they were police sirens and decided not to wake us up.

I've never seen one in person , only on TV.
I have seen the aftermeth in person. In upstate NJ about 15 years ago, a relatively small, short lived tornado blew through Ringwood,NJ. I saw the path it left through the forrest- many trees cleanly sheared off at about the 15 foot mark-some trees were a few feet in diameter. It was like a huge buzz saw came in and cut them off.
The power of even a small one is hard to comprehend.

I've seen two.
I would recomend that anyone in a tornado area get free spotter training from the weather service. You don't need to be a ham radio person to be a spotter but it's more fun if you are.

I remember we were driving home once in a huge storm, wondering why it had gotten so dark so quickly... When we got home, we realized we had in been driving in the same area as some tornado. But I think it was a weak one, at least, for there wasn't too much damage caused by it.

Nope, never seen one. Don't get them in California.
We did in Southern California when I was growing up, they just never called them tornados. "Parts of Orange County were ripped by tornado-like winds today...." "A funnel cloud touched down in San Bernardino..." etc.

There have been a few in my area during the last few years, but I've never actually seen one. The ones we get here are apparently very small and often don't even touch down. One did touch down about 15 miles south of my town on Monday, but didn't do any damage. The wind (besides the tornado itself) did knock branches off of trees, which killed the power in half of my town and most of the next couple of towns south of here.
That's a waterspout.

i slept through one
when i was 10 we went to florida for holiday on the way back from New Zealand (we lived there for a year). And we were that jet lagged that when we woke up the next day, it was all over the news that a mini tornado had ripped through orlando.
They'd closed the water parks, it'd shook glass from buildings...
and I just snoozed through it

They are, but only in certain places: high altitude or fairly dry or cold climates tend to inhibit their spawning. That's why, while you might hypothetically see tornadoes in places like Denver, you'll never see an F5: at a mile up, the air is just too thin to really kick up a superHoover.
As for me, I've seen only one, and it went right over my house as it was coalescing back on the farm in Idaho. I remember seeing that small, low-handing cell come in and thinking how remarkably dark it was, then it started to spin. Fortunately, it was moving so fast that the twister was about 5-10 miles east of my house when it really turned into a Tornado and moving fast eastward. Still, it scared the hell out of me, because I was the only one home and I had absolutely no clue what to do with the horses.
