i also checked it out, but i refuse to beleive in your theory of optical illusion. i think that as we check it out the magic invisible fairys pop out from the picture and change the colors to match each other.

They are they same colors, it's just that the numbers and squares have opposite coloring.

Learn a lesson from me: One should not look at optical illusions late at night when one's eyes are droopy and one is tired. You just get confused and irate that things aren't behaving as they ought to, and it spirals into ranting at your computer... at least it does if you're just a hair less sane than I am.

the "wtf man" picture is easy:

brains compensate a lot. If parts of a square are missing, we can still see a whole square

If something is in shadow, as square B is, and we see a pattern of light and dark squares, our brain registers it as lighter than the others.
We are bad at actualy distinguishing the colours of something, but we are mighty good at distinguishing patterns

the castle: call it eye adaption

If you would examine it closely, you'll find that it is lightly coloured. Thing is, our receptors based with decerning colours and such adapt every instance. When they are faced with bright colours, such as a summer day, they become less receptive, so if you go inside to a room where there is only electrical lighting, everything seems drab. The same goes the other way around. They get more sensitive when colour is scarce. Something simmilar happens in low light conditions. This isnt the complete truth, but as much of it I know.

The grid:
the crossroads are a bigger space between the black squares, they provide a better contrast than the "roads", therefor the bright white. No explanation on why they are dots. Why they move? It only works for the area you focus on, as there the right receptors are placed in your eye

It's more the response to colors. Stare at red, you'll see cyan; stare at blue, you'll see yellow; stare at green, you'll see magenta. You might notice the colors start to lose contrast during the thirty seconds.
