Are we on the brink of war?

I've heard all this stuff about how a larger regional war in the middle east is brewing and quite possibly WW3 with North Korea and others getting involved. And also of course that Jesus is coming back and the world will end. To me this all seems like hype and fear, like the bird flu.

If N.Korea tries anything really stupid China, S. Korea and Japan would flatten the place in a day and a half. So they wont do anything. In the middle east this whole thing is nice and happy compared to previous conflicts. Israel hasnt even sent in ground troops, and they are only attack one country. In the past they have had all out war with nearly all of its neighours. Things will calm down in a week or two.

So what do you think, bad times ahead or hype?

Probably...but then again, the world has changed so much and economies have become interconnected with each other that we truley do live in a global civilization. Lets face it, the days of Nation-States are almost in the history books, and the Age of Global Civilization has just dawned.

Having said that I think that if we just dumped a fat sack of hash on the arabs and the North Koreans...the world would run a hell of alot smoother...and funnier.:p

True, in a way we are in MAD in that if one place goes down, others are bound to follow.

Gas prices are rising and there's a possibility of soaring natural gas prices in the winter, North Korea's threatening the Pacific Rim with nukes and missles, a hard-line Iranian president is sponsoring terror and sanctions are in the air all while Israel is invading Lebanon and Gaza and Iraq is causing problems for the region.

Oh wait, it's not 2006, it's 1996!

That's why I don't think it will come to a war. Level heads will prevail again and the situation will cool down; the damage to the peace process is severe but it will start again. Even the wars of the 1960's/1970's between Israel and its enemies didn't come to WWIII even at the height of the Cold War, so I'm not worried about it today.

The world's going to hell. We been heading to hell for a while now...

In 5 years, we'll probably in WW3.... and I'll probably be sitting in a lawn chair on a roof somewhere watching bombs go off, waiting for someone to drop the first nuke of the war, smiling.....

Yea, I'm kinda crazy :)

All that hash does seem like a good idea also :P

No, I hate it.

I'm just calling it as I see it, this has nothing to do with my preferences.

I am a nationalist, not an internationalist.

Yeah, actually. It makes it a hell of a lot harder for repressive regimes to seal themselves off and reduces their ability to weather economic sanctions, both of which undermine their ability to resist the demands of the international community. The economic benefits are another plus.

I think it is, it keeps countries on a more level playing field and less likely to do something stupid.

Whether a globalised world is or isn't a plus, it is certainly inevitable.

Newt, talking on Fox News, claims we are on the brink of WW3. I don't believe it though. However, I am a little concerned and scared.

I think it's all going to be fine in a few weeks. I'm sure by then, the Jews and Arabs will be laughing together and calling the whole thing a silly misunderstanding.

Are we on the Brink of War

Well you see the whole problem with a globalised world in which nationalism still runs strong (especially in countries I wish would just sink into the ocean... can you say Atlantis;) ), is that people will feel a need to involve their nation in a conflict that really shoudn't effect them. However, since the middle east may be WW3's Powder Keg (think Ante-Bellum Europe before WWI, and Germany before WW2), what with its rich natural resources, and religious "signifigence" who doesn't feel the need to stick their nose in the Israeli/Arab's buisness (;) ). Soooo, in conclusion, in this day and age we are *always* at the brink of war, we can just pray that whomever is in power at the current point of time isn't a meddlesome warmonger (in otherwords anyone in the US better pray REALLY HARD); of course all of this is assuming you dont live in a poor African nation who is too busy dealing with its own problems to turn "Meddlesome Warmonger" (:D ).

I believe Gir from Invader Zim can sum up the situation best.

You are aware, of course, that North Korea has enough conventional missiles pointed up South Korea's ass to decimate Seoul the instant the first shots are fired? And that China is generally allied with North Korea? And that nobody near there is going to try and risk a nuclear attack?

As others have mentioned, the world economy is so integrated these days (I.E. the WTO's G-22, the IMF, etc.) that a war would be wholly bad business, and at it's core, politics is business.

If North Korea did something truly dangerous such as trying to use nukes or attacking nieghbours with missiles, they would be destroyed. China is only an ally of N. Korea only because they do not want to deal with N.Korean refugees. If China was threaten by N.Korea, China would destroy N.Korea without thinking twice about it.

I believe a better option would be, "now get naked with everyone in your neighborhood while you wait for the nukes to fall on you"
Inconvenient Truths
17-07-2006, 18:33
Kim Jong-Il's psychological profile suggests that he likes having an army much in the same way the boys like having soldiers as toys. He has no desire to use them in a war.

Syria and Iran have no desire to start a stand-up fight as the rest of the world would step on them quite quickly if they tried and they exercise notable influence by using other methods.

None of the nuclear states are interested in getting involved in a war. Two groups of very intelligent people came very close to wiping out the world in October '62 and I think that most/ all the nuclear nations have learnt that lesson and realise that they have too much to lose.

No nation with a McDonalds has ever declared war on another nation with a McDonalds (not a bad barometer of engagement with the Global Economy).

The rest of the world will continue to fight wars, occasionally some of the big hitters will spread their wings and get involved to secure natural resources for themselves.

WWIII though? No, seriously doubt it. It would have to be a nuclear trigger or something going seriously crazy in the Middle-East. Much crazier than it is now.

Don't worry, the horror would only last for about 20 minutes if North Korea perfects the ICBM.
