What should I do when I retire?

Celtlund

I'm not counting, but I will be retiring in 3 years, 1 month, and 29 days. The magic date is 15 September 2009. So, I'm trying to decide what to do when I retire. We will be moving from Oklahoma to Northwest Louisiana if that makes any difference.

I have thought I might teach electronics part time in a college or trade shcool, just to keep my mind busy. I've taugt before (for about 20 or so years) and enjoyed that.

Then there is gardening. Start a vegetable and herb garden, but I don't know if I would enjoy that or not.

Fly fishing is another option. I did it once and loved it. I had a ball and would like to try my hand at it again.

I could also do consulting work for the aviation industry as I have tons of experience in avionics.

There is the possibility that I could just do nothing, but I think I would get bored very quickly.

So, I'm open to any and all advice on what I should do when I retire.

Go to the pub. Have a pint.

Then go back home and make your abode lovely, and grow your own vegetables, because it's enjoyable and will keep you amused for a while.

Plus organic vegetables straight from your own garden tastee great.

I have traveled extensivly both in and out of the US. I enjoyed seeing new things, learning about new cultures, and exploring new foods. Getting a little old for that now though. :( Besides it is expensive and the medical problems with my legs wouldn't permit that. Thanks for the idea though.

That sounds great, but the beer in American bars sucks. :( I guess I could go to the liquor store and get some good imported beer and drink it at home while gardening.

If you have the money move to Banff or Jasper or Canmore or a pretty place like that... if not then... sleep. Maybe read or something, then become old and senile and lose bladder control.

(No offense meant here. I just don't agree with about 80% or so of your views, that's all.)

I would head to SoCal or Hawaii and open a small surf shack/bar on the beach and longboard every day... If you don't know how to surf, you can always learn. Totally worth it. :D

The only time you mentioned the word "enjoy" was with teaching. Do it.

Whatever else you decide to do remember to keep busy! Ive seen too many people retire and fall into the trap of not having to do anything and so doing nothing. That's slow death and not living. Try it for a spell to be sure but keep the thought of getting busy in the back of your mind while you relax and think about life for awhile. If you enjoy working, but at a less hectic pace, then do that. Possibly as a small cottage industry, or consulting in avionics or even following the ball and chain around to yard sales , buying junk and selling antiques on ebay. Big profits neednt concern you anymore but small joys and stuff that gratifies you should. Your target has changed.

Anyway thats my two cents, and congratulations on your upcoming retirement. Huzzah!

Agreed. When I was in the Air Force, the NCOIC for the lab I worked in was one of the most hard-working people I had ever seen: 12 hours a day, 5 days a week. Never missed a day, AFAIK. When he retired, he decided to relax and do nothing. He was dead a year later.

Lesson learned: if I ever retire, I intend to stay busy and productive.
