Songs of shame (well, close)

A car has just pulled up in the car park at the back of my flat playing, rather loudly, Whitney Hustons I Will Always Love You, and singing along at the top of her voice.

This made me think about number one songs that just wouldnt go away, and fun or charity number ones that should never really have made it to number one.

Example:

Mr Blobby (of Noel Edmuns House Party) - had a number one hit way back when... how?

Crazy Frog - Do I really need to elaborate on this one?

... and then there are those songs that stay at number one SO long you hope to never hear them again!...like I Will Always Love You.

So, just in general, what songs made you cringe? What should never have made the top spot, and what should have made the top spot but didn't quite make it?

a few spring to mind.

bette midler seems to love crappy creepy songs ... "wind beneath my wings" or "i wish i could be average like you but im too great".... "from a distance" or "god is the big stalker in the sky"

there are some songs that people love without realizing that they are about suicide "broken wing" by martina mcbride and (count your blessings if you are too young to have ever heard this song) "honey" by bobby goldsborough.

and then there are the songs that seem to be love songs but just creep you out. "i dont want to close my eyes, i dont want to go to sleep 'cause ill miss you baby and i dont want to miss a thing" and "every move you make, every step you take"

I was driving around earlier today blasting Ven Conmigo by Christina Aguilera and belting along. Got some fun looks, as people glance over, then process that its a guy with piercings, tattoos, a goatee, and spiked hair doing this.

twas fun.

"from a distance" or "god is the big stalker in the sky"

Actually, I rather enjoy the message of that song.

From a distance, the world looks bright and fun and sunny and everything is peachy. Get up close and the place is a rat infested hell hole.

God is watching us ......... from a distance.

Meaning: God doesn't give a fuck. Keeps them blinders on. Never gets close enough to see what a shithole the place really has become.

I like it ... Bette's a funny lady. I just wish more people understood her subtle Jewish sense of humor.

lol

its the reverent way she sings it, as if its inspiring and wonderful. people react to it as if it were a warm fuzzy song when its just not.

ewww i just looked up the lyrics, they are worse than i realized. *shudder*

Ah ... eww ... I suppose I can see that. I used to think "Tuesday's Gone" was a nice song until the US got attacked on a Tuesday.

Now it's tiresome drivel.

Anything by Celine Dion.

Oh, and that (I wish) forgettable number by Brian Adams from that forgettable movie by Kevin Costner "Everything I do, I do it for you" from Robin Hood.

That song, for me, was the death rattle of anything that was good and pure in the music industry. Adams penned that song in about 15 minutes without knowing what it was to be used for, but that same year Eric Clapton's 5 year old son died and Clapton wrote the heart wrenching "Tears in Heaven" for his son.

They were up against each other at the Grammies.

Guess who won ....
