Should smallpox be eradicated?

Well? Should it? I have no opinion and about five minutes of research into the subject, but I'm curious.

The only thing to do with it is destroy it once and for all. Researching it would be pointless, we already know everything about it and there is a cure to it already, which would also make the bio-weapon option pointless.
What point is there in keeping it? If we destroy it then there will be one less disease to worry about and we can work on destroying all the others.

yes but it might help againts any branches of smallpox (if there are any) besides if they keep it under guard i dont see any reason why it should be destroyed.

Well the U.S. and possibly Russia are working on genetic engineering experiments... (Not sure about Russia)

When, oh when, will we finally rise above this culture of genocide.

If they are then they are just idiots, the last smallpox pandemic killed millions, and if they make a new form then they'll have no cure for it, and there is no way of keeping a disease isolated to the targeted country. It'll just cause another pandemic, which would probably affect the US worst as there are a lot of people in a very small area in the major cities.

There are no surviving branches of it, we destroyed them all. And its fine to say keep it under guard, but what if someone managed to get through the security and steal it? Then we would have a serious problem.

I prefer Largepox. Although girth is more important than length.

destroy it. its too dangerous.

even though a vaccine exists verry few people are vaccinated because the virus isn't encountered by you're average member of the public. that means a huge proportion of the global population is vunerable.

Additionaly there is anecdotal evidence from reserch into mouse pox in Australia that it is relitivly easy to produce a strian of the virus that can't be vaccinated against.

Though thhis is proberbly beyond your average maniac a rouge nation could proberbly do it.

in short even if the standard strains were relaesed it would be immposible to controll and we wouldn't be able to make the vaccine fast enough. this is not a happy thought.

Engineering what?
Other pox virii, by introducing smallpox genes into them.

Also, if they did bother to research a cure to their new form before deploying it, they wouldn't have enough time to vaccinate the entire US population before it reached the US. It would be a massacre on a global scale all because of one nations idiotic military obsession, thoughtlesness and extreme paranoia.

Kill it. Now.

Its only real use is as a biological weapon, and unless you want to kill absolutely everyone on the planet, then there's no need for it.

And what kind of sane person wants that power?

I say destroy it forever, every single sample of it.
