Australia Would Back 2018 Bid, Says Howard
Heads of Australia's local governments said on Friday they would support a bid to host the 2018 World Cup.

The possibility of bidding for the right to host the tournament was discussed at an annual meeting between the national government and the heads of the eight state and territory governments.

"All governments agree enthusiastically that if the national body, the Football Federation of Australia, put in a bid for the 2018 World Cup then all governments would support that bid very enthusiastically," Prime Minister John Howard told reporters in Canberra.

Australia reached the World Cup finals in Germany for the first time in 32 years and surprised many by reaching the second round, where they were knocked out by eventual champions Italy.

Football has struggled to gain a foothold in Australia behind rugby, cricket, rugby league and Australian rules football, but the World Cup transfixed fans across the nation despite matches being played late at night or early in the morning local time.

Australian officials are already considering lodging a late bid to stage the 2011 Asian Cup as part of a plan to host the game's showpiece event in 2018 or 2022.

Football Federation Australia has said Australia wanted to host the Asian Cup to prove it could host the World Cup.

FFA Chief Executive John O'Neill has said several times in recent months that a bid for the 2018 World Cup was seen as "putting a stake in the ground for 2022", meaning that the latter bid was more likely to be successful.

The 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa while the 2014 event is to be staged in South America. A decision on the 2018 tournament is not expected to be made until 2012. Australia successfully hosted the Sydney 2000 Olympics as well as the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March this year.

I think it is a great idea and can only be good for the game.
There was talk about New Zealand and Australia co-hosting it but i beleive Sepp 'Deitrich' Blatter said it wasn't a possibility as they were in two different Confederations.
It has always been a problem for New Zealand being so isolated from the rest of the world we haven't really been able to consistanly get matchs against other nations and Australia a nation we have the closet links to didn't really want to play us for 'fear' of losing to us, or at the very least if we got a better understanding of how they played we could only get better.-Something Oz wouldn't want 'cause we would eventually beat them more often and take more Oceania Tournaments and so get qualification for the Confederations Cup and that precious 1/2 entry to Worl Cups.

Maybe now that Australia is in a different Confederation we might actually play them more as they won't have anything to lose unless of course FIFA changes the 1/2 spot to 3rd(?) in Asia plays 1st in Oceania which woul put New Zealand back at square one.
As it is we should qualify for the Confederations Cup everytime.:p
Heck if we do still play 5th in South America for World Cup Qualifications they'll freeze to death if we play the match in Dunedin.:p

It is a shame Australia had to move to get the World Cup spot they deserve but i suspect it can only hurt the Oceania game as a whole.

Anyways...
FFA Chief Executive John O'Neill was the man behined Australias successful hosting of the Rugby World Cup in 2003 and the 2000 Olympics was the best ever, they should host the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Advance Australia Fiar!

Your thoughts, even on who will host the South American World Cup in 2014?

Sure 'you' would, they got massive crowds for the Rugby and Melbourne was kind of a disappointment in that regards but has enough Greeks to make up the numbers and germany had an extra 5 million visitors over the 4 weeks of the world cup.

I think there was a lot of bandwagon hopping this time, more so than you might expect at other times. At the time we qualified, the footy season wasn't on, and we were winning the the cricket, so there wasn't really anything special happening. Then suddenly, against the odds, we qualified to get into the World Cup, and everyone went insane. The point I'm trying to get at here is that while I suppose for the Australian games there will be enough people, and to an extent the Italy or Greece games, but otherwise there just isn't the fanbase.

Then again, we would have to do it at a time when the AFL isn't on so that we could use all the grounds, and with no footy people might just turn up.

Hmm, confused much I am.

Anyway, I think Australia would do a great job of hosting the World Cup, judging from their success in hosting the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. If there's a major sporting event on their doorstep, I can't imagine the Aussies turning down the chance to go see some of it, especially as Australia would be in it. Good luck to 'em.

We bought some European Sofskinned vehicles the Pinzauger(sp) when they changed the drive from left hand to right hand they didn't do such a flash job on the gear boxes and we have had some problems with them(namely ripping the guts out of them.
