8000 al-Qaeda sympathisers 'spied on'
From correspondents in London
03-07-2006
From: Agence France-Presse
BRITAIN'S internal intelligence agency MI5 is spying on about 8000 sympathisers of the al-Qaeda terror network in a bid to identify future terrorists, The Independent newspaper reports today.
Operation "Rich Picture", also aims to recruit agents within the Islamist movement, the report says.
The nationwide investigation followed intelligence suggesting there was a very small, but significant number of British-born and Britain-based Muslims, who were prepared to carry out bombings and other terrorist attacks in this country.
"Undercover officers are gathering information from all over the country, including at colleges, mosques and internet websites where extremists may try to "groom" or radicalise those sympathetic to the aims of al-Qaeda," the paper says.
Considering that there are some on NS General who are keenly sympathetic to radical Islamic causes, and the Jolt forums are in the UK, I would bet that NS General gets scanned.

Yeah, but the amount of sheer nationalism produced by some of our more right-wing posters probably assures them that this forum is a bastion of anti-Islamic hatred. Even when it isn't...

It seems more prudent than, say, spying on everyone.

The question is, how do you find out who the 8000 are? Spy on everyone? Then filter down the list of forums? Filter down the list of posters?

Well, it seems like a nice round number doesn't it?
Maybe they had a filing cabinet than would only fit 8000 files in, especially with all the photos of the big beards.

And probably, people in the UK figure, "that's a small number, I'm not likely to be included in that".
Whereas everyone in the US knows that the government has already scanned everything.

I think that most people in the UK figure that MI5 couldn't catch a cold and don't pay a blind bit of notice to things like this.

There, you see ladies and gentlemen? Clearly I am to be trusted.
There are three organizations occasionally rumored to be spying on NationStates that in fact do no such thing: MI5, the FBI, and the MIB.
No, I am not an alien. I know nothing about these aliens you speak of. Why do you ask about these aliens?... Oh, really? Never mind, just look into the little red spot and you'll get an answer to your questions... *flash*

Yes, GCHQ probably reads every word I say, but I'm aware of that.
Also - hello to you if you're reading this from afar - I hope you're having a lovely day at work. I saw one of your adverts in the IET magazine, and it looks quite appealing, but I am afraid that I have no wish to read what my fellow man or woman says in the interests of "security".
Thank you.

MI5 loses at naming things.
They might not have chosen it. The CIA, for example, selects operation names randomly.

I thought they chose their names for a purpose, but not according to what it involved (although Operation Paperclip is a large showing of where that broke down)
For example, their most infamous operation, Artichoke, was named so because the director at the time's favourite vegetable was an artichoke.
This clearly has nothing to do with mind-control and torture, which is what Artichoke was all about.
As a showing of where it all goes wrong when you name something vaguely after its purpose, see Germany's WW2 failing "Frejya", which was named after the Norse Godess of the same name.
When the SOE was researching it, they found that Frejya had an all-seeing eye, which surveryed everything.
The German project was a radar-based one, and this was inferred from the name, and it was eventually put a stop to, after Britain discovered its location and whereabouts.

Which is why they now choose them randomly. And again, I'm just talking about the CIA. FBI or military operations probably follow different rules.
