Star Trek Revisited:

Sorry, couldn't think of a better title. :p

in one episode of TOS, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy were to help evacuate a planet who's star was going supernova. the populace, saved themselves by going into different dimensions baised off of the books in the library.

so here is the question. no poll for the number of options are just too overwhelming.

of any book now published, comic/fiction/non-fiction, which world would you live in. the book has to have a world, so yes, Newspapers count, however, the story you take is also important.

now the world baised on each book or series of books would be stuck in that time period. in other words, if you took the world of "Clan of the Cave Bear", you cannot forge bronze or create tools more advance than Flint Tools. also, the situations in the book is in an ever repeating loop. for example, for "Lord of the Rings" the ring sinks into the bowls of Mt Doom and Sauron is destroyed... only to be reformed and he reforges the ring after a thousand years or so.

For news, the story will be ever repeating. for comics, the story will also be ever repeating.

for me, I would take the series Belgariand and Mallorian and live in that world.

I'm not sure if that's a good idea, you might get stuck with Torak cracking the world over and over again. ;)

I think I would head to Middle Earth. It could be bad at times, but hey, I might get to stay with the Elves on Valinor.

Discworld, no question. Get a job on the Night Watch or work for the Patrician as a clerk, maybe even join the Assassins Guild and learn a thing or two.

I'll choose life as a subject of His Imperial Majesty Cleon I (11,988 GE - 12,038 GE), last Emperor of the Entun dynasty of the first Galactic Empire, on the pleasure-planet of Kalgan, then.

Peter Pan. Any variation would be okay, though if I could choose a specific Hook, I'd like the Hookfrom Hook (1991.) There is no better Hook than Dustin Hoffmen. Period.
Demented Hamsters

So many to choose from:
Sin City, maybe? But only if I could hang out with the hot chicks.
Judge Dredd, as long as I could be a judge.
Slaine, especially if I could warp.
Jack Vance's Lyonese or Dying Earth series. The spells are cool.

Any of those would do.

I know i've said that before.

Good thing i haven't got to rub bug powder on my laptop's I/O "orifice" in order for it to be more agreeable with me ... *thinks Whereyouthinkyougoing's sexy cyberlisp*

BTW - Colbert's intro is good tonight. Arrr.

Cable's out, have to take your word for it. You had to know I was into Burroughs, it's one of the only two things that doesn't change in my sig.

EDIT: Dammit, if we start associating WYTYG with bug powder eventually we'll try to shoot a glass off her head and that doesn't end well.

You have read some, though, haven't you? It's not just the movie for you, yeah?

You have read some, though, haven't you? It's not just the movie for you, yeah?I've also got him on audio - like "The Badger", for example, reading his stuff.
I've read very little from him though .... i've just about given up on fiction books. Or at least ones that are genre-i-fied as such.

You mean to tell me you haven't already associated her with the part with Joan and Bill concocting on the Mujahadeen?

*thinks about being on the floor with Whereyouthinkyougoing while a typewriter humps around on top of us, indiscriminately*

It jumped of its own accord.

You did see that, didn't you?

Joan, are you all right?

Hmmmnnnn...so many to choose from. There's a lot of impressive worlds out there, but the problem with most of them is that there's always an imminent danger and I don't know if I'd like that kind of environment.

Having said that, if I could make a list:

-Dominaria (Magic: The Gathering)
-Narnia (incidentally, one can actually *live* in Narnia if they so wish- just move to Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narni))
-Mushroom World (Super Mario Bros.: big fan when I was a kid)
-Jurassic Park ('cause dinosaurs are cool)

However, if I could sneak in that computer in Star Trek that instantly makes food appear and translates every kind of language, that would be great. :D

What, no one else wants to fly around and never grow up?

...

Eh, too late for that for--well--all of us.

So, other than Peter Pan, I think I might sojourn to Norrath. Yes, Norrath. As in EverQuest. Shut up, I play the game and I like the world. It's cool.

Contrary to the way it seemed, there was no conscription. They merely called all retired Starfleet officers back into service. And indeed, not a one complained, as they would have done it anyway. So, you'd be safe on Earth. Just avoid San Francisco. Stick to someplace nice. Me? If I were there, I'd probably live in the exact same place I do right now.

Ah, yes- Stargate. That's a cool world to be in. Might be a little freaky (standing face-to-face with Osiris would be intimidating) but it'd be cool. It seems to be more along my way of thinking- more open-minded (the Star Wars/Star Trek worlds seem a bit too rigid).

:( C'mon, hot/smart/etc. witches approximatly my age (equal to my age in my mind ^.^). THINK of the possibilities, man! :D Plus, all the practically-legalized murder on both sides ^.^

But seriously? Star Trek TNG, while they're on their voyages in those years. Pretty cool stuff.

The Wheel of Time series as Robert Jordan will never stop writing therefore I wouldn't ever reach the end and get the reset button.

However I believe the library in question was historical...I should pick up seasons 2 and 3 since that episode wasn't in the season 1 collection.

Oh, Yeah!

The Holodeck on TNG. You could have a almost limitless variation in your daily life, or stick with a program for a long time. It would never get boring. Although I might have to tweek the program to allow more *interaction* with the holodeck populas....;)

*sigh*

Am I the ONLY one smart enough to put some thought into this, and say Playboy?

In seriousness though, a repeating story would be very boring, and I don't fully understand the question. Someone said Harry Potter back there, now suppose I said book three or whatever, would I complete book three and go to four, or would I return to the beginning of book three? Suppose I don't even decide to take part in the plot. Suppose instead of screwing around throwing jewelry into volcanoes, I start a lucrative lemonade business. Would all that be undone once some hairy midget tosses some guy's ring into a fire-hole? And what if I chose something lame, like the neverending story. How does the loop work on that? And what if I die in the story, would I wake up back in the beginning like that movie with that Ghostbuster guy?

for news articles, it would be the same day over and over. Comics, the same segment of story... (ala, Groundhog Day)

if this is a scifi book discussion forum, which it looks like, then heres a good one: Battlefield Earth by L. ROn Hubbard. excellent book, extremely long. my copy is 1050 pages long, and it moves pretty quik once it gets goin. kinda starts off slow tho. but an awesome book nonetheless. they made a movie of it, but its crap. the book is way more complicated and way more deserving of longer screentime than that pitiful attempt at entertainment.
