I've just come home from the fireworks display. This year, in Nantes, the theme was Mali so there were mainly red, yellow and green fireworks and African music.

I know, but in order for the lingua franca to become dominant again, we need to correctly used. So feel proud in the fact that one of your sentences was used as an example in an internationnal summit about french.

I'd been considering it for a while, until I did a bit of research. In their first month of training they have to do a 50k ruck march and to graduate they have to complete a 160k. *shudder*

And here I was thinking the 30ks we did when I was in the US Army sucked.

If I weren't in the middle of college (my major is French!) I'd probably consider it more seriously. I honestly do like the military life, and an organization like that would certainly have the cameraderie and collective pride that I miss from my time in the Army.

I chose French as my major because I love the language and I love the country. What I'd really like to do is teach English in France, so I'll likely get my Masters in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

I'd suggest going with the shortest enlistment you can, just in case you end up not liking it. That said, the Guard is a fine organization, and a good way to get started in life.

I've become a bit of a peacenik myself since I actually had to go do the whole war thing. I'm not anti-military, but I'm very much anti-war. I just don't see the sense in killing people unless it is absolutely, completely necessary, and 99.9999% of the time it's not.

I don't see how you can be hated for being a hippie...it's better than being all "kill everyone!"
Haven't really looked into the FFL, the military life is too sexist, esp. the Navy.

Don't be swayed by commercials. Don't join the Guard unless you think you're able to go to Iraq or Afghanistan and kill people, because there is a good chance you'll have to do exactly that. Even if you end up being a clerk or some other rear echelon job, there's no guarantee that you won't get caught in a firefight on a convoy or something.

Earning the Gold Award is your ticket to college. Do a scholarship search on that. The military will pay for a year at best. One lousy year. 30k doesn't go far at a good University and I don't recall anyone getting killed in the Girl Scouts.

Grades and whatnot are a better, more reliable source. In Texas, if you're valedictorian, the State pays for 4 years of Univeristy.

Put the NG on the very, very bottom of your list.

Trust me, it's a lot easier to think you're ready to do such things when you're not looking down your sights at another human being. It's a hell of a price to pay for a free ride to college. I don't think it's a price worth paying.
