Fears of the 21st Century

The New Diabolicals

What do you think are things people fear the most in this day and age. By that I don't mean phobias (i.e. spiders, the dark), not things that freak you out but you never worry about them. I mean what do you think people worry about the most in 2006? Things like the environment, industrialization, social alienation - what do you worry about?

nothing really everyone my age tends not to worry about oil running out and everyone older seems to only worry about whether or not there going to keep there job (or as they put it there job going to the Chinese when its really going to automation)

I think spending the last century shit scared has effected people especially when you consider nuclear war didn’t happen and I’m still waiting for Y2K

I actually had a heated debate about this a few days ago it turns out Cornish pasties peaked in the late nineties and since then have had falling quality outside of Cornwall were overall taste has got better

I wish I were your age. I do worry about my job getting up and getting on a flight to India (not China and certainly not automation, not yet). Fear is a wonderful motivator for getting people to do what you want. Governments and corporations learned that lesson a long time ago. Pass the antacids, will you?

Few things people worry about without any reason (talking about my country, fears that irritate me)

- violence (rapes etc)
- bears, wolves

Why rolling your eyes? … with all the crap we have pulled over the years, a fear that we may fuck with his country is a very real possibility even if it is not too high in likelihood

I don't fear anything like that in this day and age. But I'm only 13, so what should I worry about?

I'm 13, and I'm one of those people who fears everything from terrorism to the bent paperclip on my desk.
... wait, where did it go? OH GOD, IT'S GONE! IT'S IN THE PIPES! GET OUT! GET THE HELL OUT!

Ahem. Is this things which should be feared in the 21st century or irrational fears of the 21st century? For the former: religious fundies, oil prices, for the latter: global warming. Yes, it is something to worry about, but it's not going to cause the end of all human civilisation as some people seem to think.

Either. I started this topic because I am currently writing a screenplay and I want it to pick at people's fears in this day and age as it is a horror movie. So, yes, 'I used you all!' But I just want to know what you worry about.

Why? It's a fairly common view outside of the US. The world doesn't trust you at all not to go and invade some random country on a flimsy pretext.

That's it. I've had a few beers. I'm feeling a bit frisky. I'm invading Northern Ireland. By myself. Armed with nothing but a big stick. :p

And I should point out that it was once a "fairly common view" that the Earth was flat. :p

And you'd probably win. Brits would take any excuse to leave, IRA would support you because you got rid of the Brits, and the UVF etc. would just take it as another excuse to attack the IRA, leaving you open to waltz in and become King of Northern Ireland or something :p
