How do you feel about Americans...as a people?

The Atlantian islands

The question is simple. How do you feel about Americans as a people. Lets leave our government out of it. No Bush, no Iraq, no War on Terror. How about the American people? If you have been to America what do you have to say about us? What are some of your experiences with us that you have burned into your memory. If you havnt been to America...what did you think about any Americans you have met while they were travelling abroad. Stereotypes are allowed (freedom of speech), trolling is not(you dont have the freedom to act like a tool on this site).

Now, go ahead...you're on your soapbox.

I'll admit it, I used to just blanket hate you US citizens. Of course, I made excpetions for certain celebrities and rock stars. But until recently, I didn't really know anyone from the US in real life. By recently I mean in the last five years or so. Since then, I've been forced to revise my opinion. I hate your government with a passion, and that isn't going to change. That doesn't mean I can't see any good in it...but there you go. Toss me a Canadian or a US citizen...I can't tell you before hand if I'll like or dislike either one.

As for generalising...I think you guys are a little too diverse for that. Chile is much easier to generalise about;)

I found many Americans to be in general a friendly, kind bunch who are quite helpful. Though I did see some Americans now and then who were not so enjoying (not mean, just ignorant) - for example, in my trip in Buffalo I bought a hot dog and some sprite, and there was a small line. When I bought my hotdog, the guy behind me said: "Better watch it there little buddy, you might spend your whole month's paycheck on that food."

He had the dumbest chuckle ever, and he looked like what most people imagined the Southerner to act and look like.

Otherwise they were a cool bunch.

First off, I question the political leanings in the poll when this was supposed to be about the people, not the government.

Second: being an American myself, I've got to like some Americans. And I do. I dislike some as well. People are people, regardless of the country they live in. Anyone who blanket hates everyone from a particular country is a bigoted fool, methinks.

Nope. Just the yanks. I think it began pretty early on...my Godmother was a nun who was gang raped because she was a Sandanista supporter. I learned about US involvement in various dirty wars in Latin America...did a paper on it in Grade 5 that just about got me booted out of school. We also used to take a road trip to Montana about once a year, and I hated the ignorant questions we'd get, like "do you live in igloos" and so on...that was when I could still rattle off all the states mind you. So yeah. It was just the US.

being an American, i will be the first to admit that many Americans are ignorant hicks that litteraly dont know their asses from a hole in the ground (thank you Randy Newman). Our government is run by Americans, and therefore i cannot *not* include them in my response. I strongly dislike (and that's putting it rather mildly) the government right now, but as a whole, Americans are generally very nice, until you begin to talk politics. Even the most ignorant person in this country has an opinion on politics these days. But until you mention politics or beliefs or anything along those lines, most Americans are nice when they first meet you (unless they dont like your ethnicity for some reason...i.e. a KKK member meeting a black person, or some ignorant person that thinks all Hispanics are illegal aliens here to take their job away...etc)
There are, of course, the same greedy, selfish people here as there are anywhere else, but here there seems to be more of them and they always seem to be in control. But a vast majority of Americans are good people; just split on their opinions with no sign of a compromise in sight.

Contrary to the stereotypes of Americans being obese and stupid and all that, most of us arent obese (a bit over weight, perhaps, but not obese...actually, i'm UNDERweight, if anything...) and much smarter than we're given credit for (we might not be Asian, but then again, who is? ...oh, right...the Asians... )
i'm going to stop babbling on and on now though and probably forget i ever made this post. reply to it if you wish, but i probably wont read this topic again, as i hardly ever read the forums here.

Uh-huh. That you find me so extremely weird says more about you than it does about me. Maybe one day we can have a conversation, rather than you making odd assumptions about what I believe, and how 'fanatically' I believe it.

as a USian how could I not like my fellow citizens? There are some good people here who don't fit the stereotype at all. There may be a few who do (in my family no less) but it's not like there aren't those types everywhere. It's our govt that I cant stand and am embarassed at our actions as of late on the world stage and depressed about whats going on domestically, but all I can do is my small part in making a difference by pushing the viewpoint in the direction I would like to see my country go.

I like Americans very much. I don't, however, like the assholes who currently "represent" them, run their government, or support their current administration. I also can't stand those religios zealots who proslatize at every operatunity and try to convert their country into an executive-run oppressive theocratic dictatorship. I could never support those who do not support freedom. Benjamin Franklin (who would currently be celebrating his three-hundreth birthday if he were alive) once said, "They who give up a little liberty in order to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety. He was right. Once you give up your rights, it will be virtually impossible to get them back. Freedom is priceless.

Anyone who says "All (insert nation of origin) are...", and proceeds to explain a stereotype, is an asswipe.

That being said, all people can have tendencies to act, or think, or do something that most of his countrymen would also do.
Part of it may be common sense, or part of it could be where he/she was raised.

People from Britian for instance, tend to eat beans on toast occasionally for breakfast... that sort of thing...

However, thats about it.
The United States has every culture on Earth living in it, and its people are equally as varied.
Some of us lean to the left politically, and other lean to the right.

I look at my fellow Americans, and I see many things.
I see a growing tendency to let the television think for us, hearing about world events on television, and then listening to some douchebag like Bill O'Reilly, or Mike Moore tell us how we should feel about what just heard.

We have a tendency to allow our elected officials to do some pretty awful shit in our name, and convince ourselves we can do nothing about it, and matters could always be worse.
We do this becuase we have so much, for so long, and we often take what have for granted.

We are taught to be patriotic and that our nation is better than anyone elses, and many of us, take this far too seriously, and dont realize that many places are really cool as well.
Theres nothing wrong with loving the country your from, but pledging blind obediance to an ideal, when the people who represent that ideal are bastards, makes one also a bastard, and a dumb one at that.

Nobody likes dumb bastards.

I may dislike the US, but I do like most individual Americans.

As a society, I do find them generally ignorant of the world and very self-centered towards their country.

Individually, they are usually like anyone else that I have met and are good people.

First off, I question the political leanings in the poll when this was supposed to be about the people, not the government.
I too question your motives for including political persuasion in the poll when you state that you want to keep politics out of this thread.

First off, I don't really think that you can judge EVERYONE from a country easily, but in general, I'm definetly more than a little bit fond of my fellow Americans. People seem to have this mental image of people from the South being racist rednecks, but from what I've seen down there it isn't true at all. People from the South are the friendliest people in this country for the most part, much friendlier than the assholes up here (I'm from New England). Also, I'd say that oddly enough, racism is worse up here too, people in New England just hide it and pretend to be "cosmopolitan" instead. I used to believe all of the stereotypes about the South too, so really, it's best not to judge unless you've been there yourself.

And of course I like Canadians and their #1 export... Degrassi! :)

My High School had a pretty extensive exchange program, and we got a bunch of students from Germany, France, a few from the UK, etc.

It seemed that those people are just like us Americans--they're mostly nice, they try to help when they can, they like to joke around, etc.

Now I haven't actually been to a foreign nation yet, but from what I've seen, there's really not that much a difference between us Americans and you.

Well, except for our fat asses. We had this guy from Germany who was so thin I thought I could stare at him and break him in half.

Yeah, when I lived in the UK (when I was a little kid...) none of the kids there were much different from the kids here in the US (though the accents were different). I went to France once on vacation and a girl came up to my sister and I and said something in French (it must of been to the effect of "Hello") but neither of us understood her, being very young at the time. It's quite the same in the US, actually, except that some kids can be a bit rude about their questions (but I expect that could be anywhere).

As for the last part... we should ban fast food.

anyway during the war most of my family fought for the germans, only a few great uncles fought for the australians rather..

but what the americans did do for my family, one of my australia great uncles was on a prison boat and he was killed when the americans sank in, and a couple of my great cousins were in the hitler youth died in norther fance facing the americans and canadians
