 ANOTHER thread relating to emo. Oh dear. Three possible outcomes...1. the thread will quickly die 2. It'll turn into a discussion about how people who like it are losers etc or 3. How emo isnt actually emo, it meant something different in the old days. BTW i like it as well, but i predict mucho hostility from the emo-hating hoards aaaaany minute now...

I have to ask, WTF is emo?

I keep hearing this term, and I dont know, maybe it's because I've been out of the UK for 9 years, but I dont understand what 'emo' is supposed to mean?

Is it puppy punk? Is it try hard bands? Is it people who dress all goth but dont really understand it?

Someone, please, enlighten me.

It encompses pop punk stuff aswell hardcore screamo type music. Bands and people are usually called emo by the way they dress.

If that were so, "Boys in small girls' jeans and tight tops and girls in short skirts and corsets like some kind of gothic prostitutes" would be more appropriate than "emos".

Depends on if you mean whiny, eyeliner-heavy modern emo (in which case a good example would be something like Aiden or Jimmy Eat World), or the "stfu n00b, emo = emoshunal hardc0re" type of emo, in which case listen to something like Rites of Spring.

One who recently broke up was the Filaments (check their "What Happens Next" album). They broke up and some of them started a group called Black Radio which have yet to get properly going, but look out for them as they're pretty good (and I don't like punk as a rule).

I like the Smiths, which is close to emo. Morrissey basically started the whole Emo movement with his theatrical voice, ridiculous attitude and self-pitying lyrics. Morrissey, however, was a bit more subtle about the emotional bit.
Compare:

"And though I walk home alone,
and I walk home alone,
but my faith in love is still devout."
OR
"And if a double-decker bus
crashes into us,
to die by your side,
oh, the pleasure, the priveledge is mine."

WITH anything by an EMO band.

Rockers were more punk than the Mods were. Punk isn't about violence, yes Sex Pistols mainly kicked off the whole anarchist punk bit. Punk has nothing to do with dance music, chavs, guns or drugs, it's not related to chavs (you deserve your head ripping off for that one) groups like blazing squad create chavs which are a bad attempt at hip-hop. If I wanna get really technical punk is an ethos and is expressed by people through their music, but punk is not music itself in the same way house is.

Um...

I hate to point it out to you... But only the 70's had a thing to do with punk in that entire list. Modern "Emo" has nothing to do with punk in any way shape or form any more (if you go look at the interviews with the bands that "started" Emo, you'll see that they weren't trying to be any more or less emotional than bands before them. Guy Piccioto basically denied that Emo existed within punk).

---

Modern Emo bothers me, but I love the stuff that "sparked" it. Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Embrace, Nation of Ulyses, and the post HarDCore bands are simply amazing.

Yeah these guys rock! good old dischord! I would ahve to add the 'emocore' bands too like hoover, crownhate ruin, regulator watts, abiline and four hundred years and a band that took a more jazzy take on such 'emocore' were June of '44... in my opinion these guys also rock and most in the list have had strong associations with dischord records.
