Sliced bread is like any other tool.

It is, in and of itself, neutral.

Sure, it can nourish and provide a stable and convenient platform for sammichy goodness.

But it can also kill. Witness these lyrics from the Police song "King of Pain."

[Sting]

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man lookin' for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleepin' on a golden bed
There's a skeleton chokin' on a crust of bread.

It can feed, it can kill. Sliced bread: use it responsibly.

Maybe but the question is what was the best thing BEFORE sliced bread?

Un-sliced is better. Pre-sliced is always too thin; even the "extra-thick" is only about an inch. Un-sliced also tends to taste nicer.

depends on the bread... but yes.

after all, have you tried slicing fresh baked bread with a dull knife? you end up with a slice of bread that looks like it was through the compactor...

Of course it's good. Imagine having your bread ripped instead of cut; the pieces would all be different sizes and stuff.

Its not "bad" by any means, nor by any means is it especially "good"
It's convenient, and a nice instrument with which to eat a sanwhich, but other than that.... meh. I mean, it's fine and all, like if I want a sanwich I'll put it on sliced bread..... but it's not "astounding" It's not like you hear someone go "OMFG!!!!!!! KICKA55!1!!!1 SLICED BREAD!!!!!My favourite!!!"

It's a tricky issue..... I'm glad you brought it to our attention. I must go ponder this.......

My vote goes to "I like waffles", but not because I want to choose a "random" or "joke" answer, but, rather, because, after much thought and many commas, I have realized that waffles are the answer by being superior to sliced bread in every way, with no real deficits, waffles cement themselves as greater than sliced bread, leaving the inferior sliced bread as merely "ok."
Waffles, after all, make better sandwiches than bread of any sort. More importantly, waffles are always of regular shape and size, requiring no slicing, and are generally superior and possessing of more facets.
Let's look at the facts:
Sliced Bread

Good with eggs, meat, cheese, veggies, etc
Not good with syrup or powdered sugar
Boring when eaten on its own
Toastable

Waffles

Good with eggs, meat, cheese, veggies, syrup, powdered sugar, etc
Also taste decent plain
Cooking it long enough is identical to toasting

Sliced bread is part of the UN communist plot to make us all comform to the same slice standards. First they slice your bread for you, making you lazy and dependant, then they add a bunch of brain controlling substances to make you docile.

I didn't really vote for hummus. It did, however, have the attractive appeal of being a totally random word to spout for simple sheer lunacy's sake.

On balance, not really.

It's convenient and saves time. Unsliced seems to taste better, perhaps because you spend more time smelling the bread (as you cut it) and that increases anticipation. Also you can cut it thin to make it last, or cut it thick to make better toast.

Bread, the silent killer (http://www.larian.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=ChatE&Number=294793&page=&view=&sb=5&o=) <-- this is on some other forum. I think it's quite old. Source, anyone?

French bread that was taken out of the oven about an hour ago, and is still warm. You take it and tear off a chunk. That is 1000000X better than French bread that is sliced. You get more of the flavor and texture when u just rip it.

mostly harmless and probably a great convenience when first marketed, but nothing exceptionaly wonderful about it. one could in fact, make a rather long list of its (sliced bread's) down sides.

it tend to be fattening with very little neutritional value and even less gratification. that's the main thing.

the good thing about it, when it was, is that it was cheap. and you could, live on it, sort of. but not without a lot of deficiencies if you didn't get enough diversity of other things.

but any more it's not even all that cheap.

and one can live both happily and well without it.

never wasted money buying it when i was living by myself either.

just lots of meat and noodles and vegies.

and the occasional zoozoo.

but bread almost never, potatoes seldom, tortias once in a while, rice occasionaly.

meat noodles and vegies' got what you need

and fruit

and diversity of everything

but starch don't satisfy.

you keep wanting more and you just get fatter and it still don't satisfy

which is why i think societies that eat a lot of bread and potatoes tend to get over weight, grumpy, and unsatisfied.

i mean it might not be too harmful if you don't expect too much of it

on the other hand, fry bread, now that's something else again
