I just found out he died.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/SHOWBIZ/Music/07/11/britain.floyd/index.html

In all honesty, despite the fact that I think of myself as a Pink Floyd fan, I don't think I have any song he was in.

I'm almost certain he wasn't in Atom Heart Mother and I don't think he was in any other album afterwards, so I don't really care too much.

Still its worth mentioning, nonetheless. Pink Floyd would have be different if he never belonged to it.

What can I say? For me, he was an inspiration - an incandescent bright flying spark. I am saddened, quite saddened, at news of his passing. Perhaps I'll take another turn at eulogizing him later tonight, but for now I will simply make this space available for any and all who gave a damn for the man, his music, and his sensibilities.
Not bad

I found out early this evening when my former high school art teacher (and mentor) called to tell me the news. I'd made Syd the focus of a Grade 13 Experimental Art term paper and multimedia presentation back in '86, in her class.

Of course, news of his failing health had reached me through the grapevine a number of months back, so it came as no real surprise - but I'd always thought it a shame that he'd lost his muse somewhere along the line. There was such a vitality to his work with Pink Floyd, a lovely, whimsical way about him.

I recall an anecdote I'd heard about him later on, in his post-Floyd days between the recordings of Madcap Laughs and Barrett - he'd dwelt on this notion of actions predicating outcomes, of the causal nature of... well, of everything, and so had become terrified of making decisions - as the act of making decisions eliminated potentiality. The tragedy seemed to have been that no-one in his life apparently reminded him that by taking no action at all, only one outcome was certain: stasis.

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm most obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here

And I never knew the moon could be so big
And I never knew the moon could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red

And I'm wondering who could be writing this song

I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the Winter

And the sea isn't green
And I love the Queen
And what exactly is a dream?
And what exactly is a joke?

It's sad news, especially considering that the last time anyone in Pink Floyd saw him was when they were recording "Wish You Were Here."

Julia Dream
Sunlight bright upon my pillow
Lighter than an eiderdown
Will she let the weeping willow
Wind his branches round
Julia dream, DREAM BOAT, queen of all my dreams
Every night I turn the light out

Waiting for the velvet bride
Will the scaly armadillo
Find me where I'm hiding
Julia dream, DREAM BOAT, queen of all my dreams
Will the misty master break me
Will the key unlock my mind
Will the following footsteps catch me
Am I really dying
Julia dream, dream that queen, queen of all my dreams

I'd heard a weird rumour once a looong time back that in the mid-70s David Bowie had tried getting Syd into a studio for another kick at the can, but that what tracks had been recorded were next near to useless and were destroyed.

I thought about it and asked my rumourmonger if maybe he'd got his info wrong, seeing as David Gilmour, not Bowie, had produced (or helped produce, anyway) Syd's two solo efforts. My rumourmonger insisted on it being the Bowie angle, as the young Bowie'd apparently been quite a fan of Syd and Pink Floyd in his day, as evidenced by his cover of See Emily Play on the album Pinups. Whatever. I filed it away in longterm recall 'til just now. I wonder - if it had been David Bowie, do you suppose he'd come clean about now, after all this time?

Not that that info would have any great bearing, it's just an added anecdote that would help flesh out the man from the legend. I'd really rather it simply be a concoction, a myth.

Poor Syd. I'll miss you all the more now you're really not here.

This is the first time in MANY years that news strike me so badly.
Yes I did cry for Syd.
May he ride his bike in our memory, playing his games and his jokes and his musical tunes.

DARK GLOBE

Oh where are you now
pussy willow that smiled on this leaf?
When I was alone you promised the stone from your heart
my head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
please, please, lift a hand
I'm only a person whose armbands beat
on his hands, hang tall
won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all?

The poppy birds way
swing twigs coffee brands around
brandish her wand with a feathery tongue
my head kissed the ground
I was half the way down, treading the sand
please, please, please lift the hand
I'm only a person with eskimo chain
I tattooed my brain all the way...
Won't you miss me?
Wouldn't you miss me at all

Well, first and foremost, I have some friends who are MAJOR Pink Floyd fans, and I have been basically forced to sit through just about every Floyd album innumerable times. It really put me off them. Kinda played out. And my musical tastes have shifted away from the Pink Floyd type sound- the ultra-psychedelic type rock thing (which is odd...I only really liked them before I started doing psychedelics). The only Floyd I can handle is their Live at Pompeii videos. Because that shit is fucking min blowing.

Its mostly just because I've heard it all so much. I just can't dig on it any more.

I know exactly what you mean, I was heavily into the Prog rock scene and then one day it just snapped and Istarted listening to Jefferson Airplane and trying to relive the blissful 60's...

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

Always sitting by your side,
always by your side.
That cat's something I can't explain.
Jennifer Gentle you're a witch.
You're the left side,
he's the right side.
Oh no!
That cat's something I can't explain.

Lu-ci-fer go to sea.
Be a hip cat,
be a ship's cat.
Somewhere, anywhere...
That cat's something I can't explain.

Night prowling, sifting sand.
Padding around on the ground,
he'll be found
when you're around.
That cat's something I can't explain.

Shine on you crazy diamond.
Pile on many more layers and I'll be joining you there.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
come on you miner for truth and delusion, and shine

Truly a genius, he blazed a trail across music like no other, and while it was short he'll truly be remembered. A true rock hero, who didn't deserve the tragedy that befell him.

Listening right now to The Narrow Way, Part One on my all-Floyd playlist. I draw the line at Animals, for the most part. Not at all interested in The Wall and what little else lies past it.

Yes, Floyd was/is played to death. But I simply apply Sturgeon's Law, and voila: I'll just dig whatever pleases me.

A movement is accomplished in six stages
And the seventh brings return.
For seven is the number of the young light
It forms when darkness is increased by one.
Change, return, success;
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset.

The time is with the month of winter solstice
When the change is due to come.
Thunder in the other course of heaven.
Things cannot be destroyed once and for all.
Change, return, success;
Going and coming without error.
Action brings good fortune.
Sunset, sunrise.

So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell?
Blue Skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field?
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breaze?
Cold Comfort for change?
And did you exchange
a walk on part in the war
for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
swimming in a fishbowl
year after year,
running over the same old ground.
What Have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish You Were Here.

And although I can't write it because it's instrumental, let's all remeber Interstellar Overdrive, Syd's greatest guitar playing moment, a Hendrixian piece of guitar genius.
