Fucking ridiculous. Cannavaro was head and shoulders above every other player at the World Cup, and a hot-headed Frenchman is declared better than him.

Should've been Buffon. Oh well. Good of FIFA to overlook his "curtain call" and see the man for his career. Although I often wish they'd reward a player for the current World Cup play and NOT on his career, but I don't run the show, so....
Cannervo should get it, not a player who shone for two matches in this World Cup.

Ugh.
Was it just me or did the Italians close him out of the match anyways?
Cannavaro was better IMHO, and Pirlo even better still. Zidane had great matches against Brazil and Spain, but I think Ribery for example was more valuable to the French.
I don't know how he is going to have the face to go and take the award after that savage head-butt. Clearly Cannavaro should win it, all that fuss about Zidane and against us he did nothing.

Yeah - the French got through the group because of a great performance by Vieira in the match against Togo, and Zidane's contribution was in getting them past Spain and Brazil. He did almost nothing in the group games, and very little (apart from scoring a penalty) in the Portugal match. Then in the final the Italians had the measure of him and for most of the match he had little or no influence.
On the other hand, Cannavaro was the reason Italy only conceded one goal from open play in the whole tournament, and, as we all know, more often than not, defence wins the game.

Well, a defender rarely wins this award, and Zidane played a great WC. The stupid act he made has little to do with his performance as a player, so the gold ball is not a scandal.

Well, except that 'the stupid act' showed him up as an incredibly shitty sport. You don't get red cards for nothing - they're a sign of bad, bad sportsmanship.
I personally don't think bad sportmanship should be rewarded, but that's just me.
I'll just have to remember that you can apparently get a Golden Ball just through name recognition, and not for actual acts of good game play, and in spite of shockingly bad gameplay.

I've read it was a racial slur. Doesn't matter though - anyone who turns a verbal exchange into a physical one is a stupid twat.

He played two good games, many played well throughout the cup. Most didn't get themselves sent off for a stupid incident, headbutting a player does have something to do with ability. Van Persie, great talent, complete idiot for awhilt until Wegner publically barracked him.
Maradona, one of the true greats, rememebred for drugs and cheating as well as his ability. You get sent off for something like Zindane did, it does reflect on you

It wasn't Cannavaro, it was Materazzi. I don't think we'll ever know for sure.
But players often do insult each other, and I doubt what Zidane himself said to Materazzi was too flattering...
Yeah! They deserved to dive their way past Australia!
Eh, that match was disappointing, but I remember the shite refereeing more than anything else.
Wasn't as bad as the Australia/Croatia match though. At least Italian players can dive well. The Croatian players couldn't even work out which bits to clutch when they fell over.

I wonder why do so many people sympathise with this violent African as opposed to the proper, healthy and handsome Italian that is Materazzi. Either the status of the white man in this world is quickly deteriorating or we let petty anti-Italian nationalist squabbles overcome our racial solidarity. If I was to exaggerate, I would even say that Zidane should be relieved of the head that he's using so improperly. But I'm not going to say that.

Crowds in Italy have a lot of dumb mottos and symbols. A number of violent and stupid people create "fan teams" more similar to gangs. These are mostly right-wing extremists, usually racists, and this accounts for fascist salutes and insults to black players.
In some way, football is the area where the worst of our istincts is conveyed. And little has been done to fight this.

How many years has Zidane played at international level? How many years has he played in Italy?
How many years did he suffer racist slurs in Marsel. because his parents are Algerian?
Yet on his last match, as Captain of his country, in the World Cup final, which he's probably going to win- he forgets years of maturity and experience and headbutts a guy because of a possible racist slur.
If that's what happened, Materazzi has nothing to be proud of, but Zidane has no one to blame but himself- he could have just walked away, like all the years previously.

That's the whole point - down on the pitch, he can't just act for himself. He's on a team, and they rely on him not to DO stupid shit like that. He really let them down.

Football players have always trash talked, and always will, and Zidane does enough of it himself. No justification there for Zidane's actions.
He should NOT have been awarded the golden ball - it sends a terrible message to kids playing football. It says that going overt the top with violence is acceptable and will be forgiven.
The golden ball should probably have gone to Canavarro, for the best performance by an individual player througout the tournament.
