Tarot cards

I am not going to put a poll or anything I just wanted to know what people thought of them.

My girlfriend (who generally shares my views of religion if less extreme I thought anyways) just bought a set today and I found myself disappointed in her. I was wondering what other people thought of them.

I don’t know why I was disappointed I just find that sort of silly superstition to be as ridiculous as hearing someone say that the spirit of Elvis lives in their basement or that some 2000 year old dead Jewish guy is going to come back to haunt us.

Its not a deal breaker or anything but do any of you think I am wrong to feel a bit disappointed?

Lol sorry bit drunk and trying to not make myself sound like an ass

Why be dissapointed? Tarot cards are a lot of fun, actually. You try to be mystic and make up whatever might somewhat slightly fit the cards. Heh, me and friends did tarot a couple times, only with old pokemon, yu-gi-oh, and harry potter trading cards. That is some hard core future interpreting there. :D

It's not wrong to feel dissapointed. Belief or non-belief in superstitions is very important to some people. I wouldn't worry too much though, unless your girlfriend starts calling Miss Cleo at 2 am.

I have a Rider-Waite deck (i.e. the one that has pictures on ALL the cards, not just the major arcana.) Each card's a little scene on it's own depicting a certain impression or theme, and I find that the symbolism of these cards is a great way to jumpstart ideas when brainstorming.

Yeah I understand your points its just more and more I find she believes in god/goddesses (she has an interesting variation of tarot cards that is about them)

As something to spark ideas or just to play with alright but I am finding she has a true faith in these things … its just offsetting cause I have dated her for nearly 3 years and I did not know this about her

Lol goes to show I really don’t have faith not just “anti Christian” as some claim me to be

A writer I knew once used them to get ideas for stories.

Maybe she's trying to keep the relationship interesting. I say you let her do her thing and if possible try to share it, making it clear that you don't really believe the same as her. Just don't be smug about it.

Tarot cards-giving hack writers themes since (some date).

That's actually now the only thing that bothers me anymore-seeing amatuer writers with stories where someone has something based on some theme from tarot cards. Wells dry, pump something else for a while. (caveat: sure it can be good and has more to do with the writer than the cards...but I'm still gonna blame the cards...cause...)

Some Tarot decks are works of art.

I'm an agnostic, but I find them a useful tool for focusing my thoughts.

Honestly, the Tarot is harmless. I have a Rider-Waite deck, and I find it fascinating, and completely benign fun.

If that was it but this as I keep finding out more and more tonight is just the entrance into her reveling her faith in god/goddesses

It is a bit uneasy for me after 3 years and being atheist/agnostic (and she has known that we have had religious debates before)

You ought to at least humor her, and look into her religion. Being atheist is pretty boring, compared to the endless amounts of fascinating religions.

I study them from the outside and I wont begrudge her her faith … just I don’t know could not help but change my whole opinion of her (well not whole but some )

Meh... I don't pick out, say, 'The Fool' and start a story about the fool, or tarot cards. The closest I come to something like that is taking (using the same example) The Fool, and think about writing a story about someone taking a trip or living on the road, vagrant style... or whatever else pops into mind as I look at the pretty picture. ^^

Nah dude, you aren't an ass for being disappointed. I would've been a little put off too. I think the whole the Tarot card thang is total BS. It's even gotten old as a theme in movies. I could see where it be a fun thing to mess around with when hangin' with some friends or something, but actually believing in it seems kinda lame...

PS-I'm with ya in the drunk part. Yay beer!

There are different types of Cards. You can get Angel Cards, which are different to Tarrot Cards because they're based on the archangels and a message they're sending to you. You mentioned that you share the same religious beliefs, maybe check that she's bought actual tarrot or angel cards.

I suppose the thing about these cards is they can be used by anyone really, you dont necessarily have to believe in them, you can just play around with them. There's no harm done.

They are a great deal of fun, though skeptics need to research theri history. After all the pentogram is seen as evil by todays standards, yet in times gone by it was used as a early cross/crusifix symbol in christianity. Its even been documented that major development of the tarot was done by a catholic preist who dabled with a number of religions.

I bought a set when I was younger because I liked the pictures. I played with them, but I didn't really believe in them. If she's just exploring, then I don't see anything wrong with her playing with them. My mom found them and wanted to burn them; she went psycho. I think that it's overboard to feel very strongly for or against them one way or the other.

Let her explore as this could be a phase. The cards can be a lot of fun as long as one doesn't take them too seriously. I wouldn't be "put-off" by it unless she starts not leaving her house because the cards tell her it is going to be a bad day.

You said she believed in gods/goddesses... which ones? I'm just curious....

Okay, well... It's hard to address this if even you don't know why you're disappointed. :)

Tarot cards are a lot of fun. Basically, they are an oracle, which is a means of stimulating thought in a person. That's all it is. Have you ever had an instance of, or known someone who had an instance of, opening an old book or a poem and reading a line or verse at random, and having that line be very specifically meaningful to something going on in their life right at that moment? Or perhaps an old song that strikes a chord? It may or may not contribute to the present circumstances, but that's an oracle. It is a connection drawn between something now that is meaningful (on the card), and something then (an event in the immediate or far past).

Then, the cards can (don't have to, but can) take that same process of forming a connection and suggest a possibility for the future. It's not a "this will happen", and it's not a "you should do this", it's a "here's what can be" and it comes from the subconscious mind of the individual reading it, unique to that individual. It means something to only them.

Tarot cards have symbols on them. Some are pictographic, some are pictures, some are words. The symbols are there to strike that chord mentioned earlier. If you've noticed, there are huge variety of decks, each offering different symbols, and different sorts of symbolism. Finding a deck with symbols meaningful to an individual is a personal thing; some even go so far as to design their own decks. I am priviledged to have a copy of one that an ex-friend made, and then published.

There's nothing really to be disappointed about, as far as I see. You should try them, too.

As far as my life goes, predictions from theses sorts of things seem to be eerily accurate.

I found a set of runes in my cupboard once and flicked through a guide, did it for a few friends over msn and my interpretation matched what they had considered doing more or less perfectely and they did it.

Tarot has come out true for a few people i know.

So, either a lot of coincidences or it can actually work.

Well, since you make the predictions, they would be. :D

EDIT: To clarify, I mean that you are the one who makes the prediction --a person. Not the cards, nor the ruins, you.

You are the one who draws the connection between "what the symbol is" and "what the symbol means". It is that connection that is true, not the "prediction they make".

i find them useful in several ways. the usefulness of augeries, even if reliable, is questionable, but the cards ARE useful in OTHER ways.

incidently;

penticle = air element
sword = fire element
wand = earth element
chalace = water element

equivelants in common playing cards:

diamonds = penticles
spades = swords
clubs = wands
hearts = cups/chalace

of course common playing cards lack the major archana

my own deck is the cat person's tarot

i don't much care for ryder-white, even if they are in a sense the standard.
a good deck needs to include all the subtle sub-elements in the standard immages, but it doesn't need to depict them in conventional ways, just convery the all of the components of feeling or of stimulating feeling i should say, envolved, because even those stimuli are responded to in personal and diverse ways by each of us.

The one time that someone "read" my tarot cards, it was totally, completely off, the girl said that I'd be getting great financial wealth within 6 months... here I am a year later poorer than ever haha. To the OP, honestly I do think you're being kindof an ass about this whole situation, I mean, seriously, so what if the girl wants to believe in tarot cards, there are much worse things for people to believe in, but then again, you said you were a bit drunk, so that may account for you getting so upset about this too haha.

Not sure if you should feel dissapointed since I don't know either of you, or your expectations. I'd lean towards you shouldn't though. Maybe she got them for fun? Even if she starts studying it.. it will probably pass soon. Curiosity or something new.

A friends girl friend read mine once.. I can't remember what exactly she said the lay out was suppose to mean.. but I do remember I had an upside down tower card.. or two. My other friend that was with me had the death card, and alot of other supposibly "bad" things. But his life has always been sorta shitty... was no big suprise there.
