Strange Rituals

We all have strange rituals we do when we go about our daily activities. What are some of yours?

Me?

Well, when I shower, I like to turn the lights off and shower in the dark.

I have way too many to list, although one of my non-OCD rituals involves my animal crackers

I sort them, first by type of animal, then I can only eat the animals if there are an even number, preferably 2 pair, I won't eat broken ones, and if there are an odd number of them I can't eat them either.

once I have sorted them by acceptable animals I then eat them alphabetically (bears before elephants ect.) and in a certain order (head, then front legs, then back legs then torso, ect.)

My ritual is with M&Ms. I sort them by color, then note which color has the most candies. I will then eat one candy of each color until I am down to one of each color. Then I eat them one at a time starting with the color I like least (brown) and ending with the color I like best (blue).

I also sort my M&M's by color, then by number (only eat the colors for which there is an even number of M&M's) and then by quality (the M must be complete) then by alphabetical order

If for example there were 16 blue M&M's that would be good, because 16 is a multiple of 4, however if one of them was imperfect I would have to toss it leaving me with 15 blues, which I can't bear to eat, so they go to the kids. ;)

When I'm in a hallway and I see an empty room with the door open, I feel the need to close it. This is especially true for dark and/or bath rooms.

Sometimes, I look behind my shoulder when I'm alone to check for ghosts and whatnot.

I can't fall asleep in complete darkness. My eyes stay open and alert. This may be because of my fear of the dark. Probably a survival thing. I guess, in the middle of nowhere, some people would be more alert in the dark. It would be easier to detect bears and lions and angry scientologists in the daytime, which would require less alertness. Why, the thought of an angry Tom Cruise coming to get you at night in the middle of an uncharted forest would drive you to the brink of madness and back. You'd get a little t-shirt that says "I was driven to the brink of insanity and back and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." That's why you would bring a Chicago Typewriter(Thompson, ak-47, tommy gun, insert other nickname here), anti-air craft guided missile system, Abrams tank, and garlic. Because there's nothing a crazed Scientologist hates more than a well-armed person carrying vampire repellent. Maybe nuclear technology, dc-10's, and volcanos. Just maybe.

I also get the urge to type way too much and not know it. Good thing I didn't do that today.

When I am asked difficult questions I rub my nose

When I am trying to get to sleep and a mosquito is flying around I have to catch it and put it outside

At uni I ritualistically check my pockets for keys

When eating I always save the best till last

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

it's when you do certain things in a certain way ALL the time. I dont understand a lot about it, but I'm sure someone on here can give you a summary
I have OCD, I have compulsions to do things that don't make sense to other people, my animal cracker and M&M sorting is non-OCD because it's not a compulsion but more "something weird I do", an example of one of my compulsions is that I am unable to walk up an odd numbered flight of stairs, I have to walk up, back down, up again, back down again, up a third time, then back down again, in different patterns until I figure out a pattern where my steps up and down equal a multiple of 4.

I can't drive on the highway, the ebb and flow, merging and such really messes up the idea in my head of the pattern of traffic, I end up getting distracted with what car "should be" where, and I change lanes to try to "even things out" in my head I can't realize that it's dangerous, pointless, or even a waste of time (as I often miss my exit) it's a compulsion. I am only able to control it right now, by not driving on the highway, and when riding with someone else driving on the highway I have to distract myself or I have panic attacks.

It's not a fun disorder, it annoys me when people claim it because they do strange things.

Also... if I see any light, I can't sleep. I have to turn off ALL lights and pull my curtains tight then bury my face into my pillows.

My glasses can't have any dust or the like on it. I can't stand it when they're messy and I can't just clean it with anything. It has to be kleenex and Windex... and I can't wear them until they're streak-free...

Of course, this gets worse if someone sitting across from me has filthy glasses, I get an urge to say, "give me your glasses, I'll clean them for you."

Yet... I'm such a messy packrat.

I always highlight text when reading it, I suppose it helps me keep my attention from straying to other text on a page:) (it also helps me see white writing);)
I do that too

Hmmm...I've been accused of being OCD from time to time, but I don't really think it's the case. People I know have plenty of reason to believe otherwise. My fiancee thinks my eating habits are the funniest thing ever...I don't really understand it. What she can't get over is that I will eat all of one item before starting on another. If I have mashed potatoes, corn, and chicken on my plate, most people will dabble between each item; I will finish my corn before starting on my potatoes, and then I will finish my potatoes before starting on my chicken. Frankly, the idea of switching constantly seems just weird to me. Not that my fiancee's any better; I've never seen her take more than two consecutive bites of anything if she has more than one thing in front of her.

I have a lot of nervous habits, like twirling my hair, grinding my teeth, and cracking my knuckles (not all at the same time, usually), but I don't really consider those rituals. My ritual for morningtime goes like this:

- wake up, take dog out to pee
- shower, get dressed
- breakfast time: bowl of cereal, glass of water, Style section of the newspaper (with the comics in it)...if I don't have my cereal or my newspaper, things are NOT RIGHT
- put dog in sister's room, go to work

...and before bed, my dog has to say goodnight to everybody in the family.

We all have strange rituals we do when we go about our daily activities. What are some of yours?

Me?

Well, when I shower, I like to turn the lights off and shower in the dark.

I thought I was the only one. I feel I dont need the light-I know where everything is already. My wife loves to tell her friends she finds me showering with no lights on.
On the subject,I also turn the water off while I lather up- I hate to waste water OR electricity.

And this isn't OCD?

I confess, as far as I know it isn't, since my entire knowledge of OCD comes from Monk...

I sometimes start headbanging to some random sound in the street that starts to make sense. People then start thinking im a retard.

That will lead them to underestimate you. ;)

When I'm drinking from water bottles, I work the little plastic ring off from around the top with my teeth and then chew on it. I also organise my skittles into groups of five, one of each colour, and then group the extras into groups of four, then three... down to singles. Then I eat them working my way up; singles, groups of two, groups of three... etc. I also... check behind the shower curtain if it's drawn shut when I walk into a bathroom. Just in case there was a murderer waiting or something. :p You never know.

I had to think about it for a while, but I do have one strangeness: CDs. They can't be exposed to open air (i.e. not in the case or not in the player) for more than 15 seconds, can't touch them anywhere except the middle or the edges, and when I put them back in the case, they have to be rotated so the printing on the label is straight across. If I go to someone's house and they have a CD just lying out in the open, I wince.
