Don't just go by the Stats, I found with the Fantasy World Cup that statistics don't easily capture the impact a player has on a match.

My nominations are Buffon (for organising a very good defense as well as not letting in any goals), Cannavaro, Zidane, Klose, Klinsmann and Kalac.

EDIT: Oh, and I suppose we can nominate more than one guy. In which case I'll add Hiddink and Pirlo.

Goalie: Touch choice between Buffon and Lehmann. Both made some fantastic saves. I think Buffon's performance tonight could prove telling.

Striker: Klose (of course)

Defender: Lucas Neill (aussie guy). He was inspiring. Funny, He currently is playing with Blackburn in England, but AC Milan is thinking about buying him from them, after his performance.

Midfielder: Zidane (what a gun)

Coach: Hiddink did well, and I suppose Klinnsman too... but he didn't react to the Italians properly, so I think Hiddink gets it. Lets see what he can do to Russia.

Most disappointing performance: Ronaldinho. Saw nothing from him. So disappointing, considering we all know what he's capable of.

Worst Performance: Kalac. Man, that was the worst choice Kiddink made all tournament. Lucky Kewell scored when he did.

Goalie:
Buffon, without a doubt.

Defender:
Cannavaro or Zokora for Cote d'Ivoire. (I think he's a defender)

Midfielder:
Zidane, no. Too many fits and starts. Unpredictable. Ballack instead.
Pirlo too.

Striker:
Podolski or Messi looked very promising (shame we didn't get to see more of Messi)

Coach:
Zidane/Vieira/Henry/Thuram- whoever is really running the French team :p

Worst Performance/
Most Disappointing
Shevchencko.

I added a "Best Overall Performance" Category (considering how they dared give Zidane the Golden Ball after his tantrums), and gave Pirlo a second nomination for that from myself.

Some good choices already posted, but I'm suprised no one has mentioned Christiano Ronaldo as worse player - can't wait to see the reaction he gets at hostile grounds in the premiership (if he has the bottle to come back that is)

Because he certainly weren't the worst player. Ok, too much acting but at least he also has some skills. Unlike -hmm- Rooney for example. :D

Goalie
Italy - Buffon
--as much as i dislike italy, the man was a wall.
Germany - Lehmann
--best damn PK performance ever.

Defender
GER - Lahm
--his runs up the wings were spectacular

Midfielder
Germany - Frings
-- hmm. i guess no one saw the 40yard blast or the terrific offense-defense he was playing. the italians really like getting things on tape, apparantly. :D
Ballack seemed like a no-show on the offense side and his defense was spotty.
Striker
Germany - Klose
--golden boot, best damn striker of the tournament
Germany - Podolski
--best young player, and the future of germany
Brazil - Ronaldo
-- cmon, he broke the record!
Coach
Germany - Klinsmann
-- see a trend yet ;) (new style worked out for klinsi)
Trinidad & Tobago - Beenhakker (sp?)
-- he coached a team with more points (1) that goals (0)

Worst Performance: (biggest disappointment)
France - Henry
-- what, one goal?
Brazil - Ronaldinho
-- world player of the year my ass

Hard Luck
Argentina - Abbondanzieri

Best player of Tournament
Italy - Buffon

Gentleman turned badass
France - Zidane :)

Goalkeeper: Zubherbuhler (Switzerland) or Lehmann (Germany). The former because he didn't concede a goal in the tournament except for in the penalty shoot-out with Ukraine, and the latter because he had a very good tournament and was fantastic against Argentina in the penalties.

Defender: Cannavaro - player of the tournament for me.

Midfielder: Tough one. Maniche, I think, because Portugal would have struggled to get out of the group without him.

Striker: Klose. Has to be - a striker's job is to score goals, and he scored the most.

Manager: Either Lippi or Klinsmann. Both were in charge of unfancied teams, and both surpassed expectations. I think I'd have to go with Lippi simply because Italy won.

Best overall performance: Cannavaro.

I'll let it run for another 24 hours or so, and then we know NS's favourite people in the World Cup.
