North Korea: What's Next?

I thought I'd bring up the subject since it's been in the spotlight lately.

What do you think the UN as well as the United States should do about North Korea's nuclear threats and recent missile tests?

Personally, I think we need to all agree on some UN sanctions against North Korea, or take military action if anything dangerous to anyone becomes apparent. This is millions of lives we're dealing with, but in and out of North Korea.

In my opinion N. Korea isn't dreaming as big as we think they are. I think they're more concerned with taking South Korea for themselves rather than attacking Japan, China, USA, etc. They don't really even have a completely operational missile yet, so far as we know.

But after all of the "WMD's" we easily found in Iraq ::cough::, one also has to question US intellegence. I think if this clear and present threat is backed with stronger intellegence, then in the near future there needs to be some sort of joint military action by the UN.

North Korea is not a military cake walk like iraq and everywhere else the US has fought since vietnam.

North korea's artillery deterrant is very strong, and it is unlikely that that it could be disabled in a US first-strike.

North Korea has not done anything to anyone, Bush is just trying to get involved in another illegal war.

While North Korea might not be the best place, at least everyone who lives in North Korea has healthcare and childcare if they need it.

There's little we can do; it's not likely that China or Russia will allow sanctions and the cost of any kind of retaliatory action is somewhat prohibitive...especially since the US's largest creditor is China. The wisest thing to do is to try and bring North Korea to talks while simultaneously preparing our defenses against any missle tests in the region. If we do that, it's possible that North Korea will back down and it will give us valuable leverage if and when we need it.

New Granada, why do you keep harassing me? Just because you don't like my views, or think that I might embarass the Democratic party somehow because I'm honest about my position.

Unlike you, I don't pretend to be a conservative to get elected, and then go back to my progressive ways once in office. I feel, that if we are honest with the voters, they will elect Democrats.

North Korea is using the Juche form of Socialism which guarantees healthcare, recreation, education, among other things, for all citizens.

First we got the bomb and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's O.K.,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way!
Who's next?

France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears;
They can't wipe us out for at least five years!
Who's next?

Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white!
Who's next?

Egypt's gonna get one, too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense,
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb!
Who's next?

Luxembourg is next to go
And, who knows, maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb!
Who's next, who's next, who's next?
Who's next?

We don't really need to worry right now. The Taepodong-II doesn't even work, as shown by the real bad test they had. I don't think North Korea will be able to hit us a missile even if they got it to fly straight.

Ideally, I think good, solid intelligence should be used, and hopefully we'd be able to find out where any nukes are, send in a Special Ops team to get rid of them. Whether or not the conditions exist for this to happen tho, is doubtful. But what else can we do? Declare a third war for us to be involved in at once?

Maybe China will go to war with them instead. Thatd be cool, we could stay out of it, China would take care of a problem that affects both of us. Of course, this is not ideal. But thats why I'm on NS general right now, instead of the Hill or the White House.

What do you think the UN as well as the United States should do about North Korea's nuclear threats and recent missile tests?

What I think the UN should do and what I believe the UN will do are two different things. What they should do is to impose immediate sanctions. What they will do is the same thing they did with Saddam, pass 20+ resolutions threatening to take action. Let's face it, by failing to act when Iraq was in violation the UN sent a clear message to the world. Do whatever you want and we won't do a damn thing. North Korea and Iran got that message loud and clear.

What will the US do? Nothing yet, we are to busy elsewhere. However, if one of those long-range missiles splashes down in the territorial waters of the US (a clear act of war) Kim may get a wake up call from some US cruise missiles.

And the fact that North Korea does not reveal the intended path of the missiles doesn't help. Aircraft and ships have no idea what airspace and sea lanes to avoid.

Along with conscription, mindless worship of the dear leader and his family, rationing, ruthless persecution of dissent, and imprisoning of whole families for 1 person's offence.

Plus the wish to re-unite both koreas under north korean control and turn 50 million south koreans into prisoners of the gulag........

Personally, I think we need to all agree on some UN sanctions against North Korea, or take military action if anything dangerous to anyone becomes apparent. This is millions of lives we're dealing with, but in and out of North Korea.

Personally, I think we should do absolutely NOTHING until NK does something stupid enough to lose Chinese support.

These tests, unfortunatley, don't go quite far enough.

Too bad too, because if we could convince China to help with even a small ground force from the North, the NK military brass would probably shit itself over the fact that the long-percieved threat of invasion came from the other direction, then run their forces around in circles trying to reorient...making themselves excellent targets for smart-bombs. :D

Realistically, however, the best bet at this point is to wait for Kim Jong-il to die...the scramble for power after that might just leave a political climate more suited for a peaceful reunification with the South.

Of course, it could also leave someone in power even crazier than Kim... :headbang:

That's saddening, I'd call it pretty sick and twisted.

Well, I'd say this threat is actually legitamate this time, and even if we do go in there and there's some bloodshed, I think that'll push for a North and South reunification. And even then, the North Koreans will definitely be grateful for some help since 9/10 of them are dying of starvation anyway.

Either way, I still have a feeling we are, or are going to be, in grave danger in the near distant future if this problem isn't dealt with anytime soon.

Just because someone's ideology doesn't agree with yours doesn't mean that you have the keys to the vault of wisdom. Flaming another poster in the manner that you have chosen, is not exactly a wise idea, especially since you are new to this Forum.
