So, does anyone remeber what happened to Pokémon?

Does anyone remeber when Pokémon was everywhere?

Nearly everyone who grew up around then was hooked. But, it all seemed to disappear instantly. I was talking about it with a friend of mine. We both thought it was because they made too many Pokémon.

So, what are your thoughts on the fall of what was the most successful franchise ever?

I thought it was because the 9 year olds like me that loved it grew up.

It was an ironically textbook case of a speculative bubble. Since I played and continue to play Magic I've got no particular warm feelings towards Pokemon...those kids should've been buying Starter set Magic packs rather than Pokemon!

As a MTG player I remembered all of the kids going in to buy Pokemon cards, and remembered even more clearly the ridiculous values of some of the cards; Charizard at $50, then $75, then $150, then $322 and then *pop* the bubble burst and they plunged back down. When Fossil came out, packs shot up from $3 to $10 in a few weeks...it was nuts and ironically similar to the dot-com bubble.

Even Hasbro's and Nintendo's stock prices match the rise and fall of Pokemon...it's nuts.

not if I use my moonstone and get a wigglytuff we'll see how your charizard fairs against a double-slap!

if only I had paid as much attention in school as I did on pokemon and if only I could escape the fact that I still know everything about it

The death of Pokémon has been greatly exaggerated several times. The rush of external movies and toys has slowed down somewhat in the past decade, but the games are still some of the top sellers. Even with it being essentially a spruced-up version of Ruby and Sapphire, and with DS and PSP games to compete against, Pokémon Emerald has sold 2 million copies in the last year in the US alone. If Diamond and Pearl make it out by the end of the year, I'd be surprised if they're not some of the best sellers of this year.
Digimon was created first, they were little Tamagotchi-like things at one stage.
Not quite. Pokémon came out in early 1996, with Tamagotchi and Digimon coming out in 1997. Pokémon wasn't released outside of Japan until late 1998, though.

Pokemon died because it was a youth fad.

Very few of the kids that bought the cards and carried them around showing them to their friends actually played the game, that's mostly why it remained a fad.
As those kids grew out of Pokemon, the new kids found their own fad.
Same thing with Pogs.

Lego, there's a good kid's toy that keeps coming back.

It's simple - generations of an age are always intent on not repeating the previous generation. Look at the changes in the 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s. There is no consistency between them.

Over merchandising killed it, it would have been fine if they had just left it at the games, but Nintendo got greedy and milked their proverbial cow to death.

That's the novelties market. It'll fade away slowly until those 9 year olds turn 30 and start buying the same crap their moms threw away.

Now, leave me alone, have to go back to eBay to look for Atari games.

Are you sure? Pokemon debut on the original NES in the 80's (unsuccessfully). Either way, I have always hated both fads, recognised them as fads and never once turned to ther cheap faddish embrace. No way in hell..not since what the yoyo did to me :(

I was in 2nd grade when pokemon hit, so I was the primary age to become a fanatic. Luckily, I also just got a N64 at that time so I didnt spend all my money on those cursed cards. They were fun, going to the 'neighborhood gyms' or whatever the hell they were called and battling other kids. I stopped caring after I beat pokemon's blue and gold on the gameboy.

Stinking Pokemon catching Klepto! You ruin everything.

Actually a few days ago I walked by some kid in a store looking through the 'Fad' cards section (Including American Idol cards? WTF? ), Curious I asked what he was looking for. He was looking for Pokemon cards, but while the box for them were there they were all sold out! They aren't competely dead.

Plus I know that some kids play them still usually because they're cheap to buy second hand and they can't afford the "Newest" Fad card series.

I was a huge Pokemon fan a while back, I liked the show, the cards and the games. I believe the additional pokemon beyond the original 150 (well maybe 151 'cause I liked mew two) is what killed Pokemon. I hated the jhotto journeys!

I still love the original pokemon games which were the good one, like red, blue, and the yellow version, along with pokemon stadium. And Pikachu is still awesome! I have 3 pikachu stuffed animals, one of them is giant!
