Pink Floyd, no contest. They write such a wide variety of sound and styles, play through their albums (meaning they don't fade out at the end of every song; instead, they transition very smoothly), they've done more concept albums than any other band I know.

Black Sabbath.

One of the most talented, most influencial, and bar none...the heaviest band ever.

As for second favorite, thats way too hard to make a choice, so I'll list a few candidates:

The Beatles.
Pink Floyd.
The Who.
Alice in Chains
The Doors.
Led Zeppelin.
Alice Cooper.

Recent findings that are growing on me very quickly:

I don't think I could pigeonhole my music taste into one favourite band.

I would probably say either Kyuss or Nirvana.

Other favourites: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Dead Kennedys, Rage Against the Machine, Sleep, Clutch, The Black Keys, Butthole Surfers, Queens of the Stone Age, the Melvins, the Stooges, Stiff Little Fingers, 65daysofstatic, Alice In Chains, Tool, Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Placebo, The Doors, Electric Wizard, Candlemass, Astroqueen, Cathedral, Spiderbait, Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Sonic Youth...

Could go on, but meh.

May Blitz
Leafhound.

That reminds me, there was a band I was going to suggest to you, but it seems my mind is blank right now. Meh, it'll come to me sooner or later.

In the meantime, have you checked out Sleep or Kyuss? You might like Candlemass, too...they all come out of the Sabbath tradition, but have a heavier feel than most of those bands. Might not be your thing, but eh.

Embrace. Embrace are a band which excels at what Fugazi do now, and they did it back in '85. More "scene politics" than "national politics", but all of the above otherwise. Including having Ian Mackaye.

I bet this already got said like 20 times already.:)

I'll go with three.

Agalloch - lush, layered, heartwrenching, mysterious, beautiful, poetic, epic, cold, harsh, soothing, somber, passionate. It can lift you up and bring you crashing down. Doom metal at its finest. Favorite song, The Misshapen Steed. It reminds me of my childhood. The eloquence and complexity of this instrumental paired with the overwhelming sadness it contains is breathtaking.

Iron & Wine - Sam Beam has crafted simple yet irresistible melodies with the flourish of poignant, thought provoking lyrics. Favorite song, Passing Afternoon. It reminds me of change and the falling in and out of love. The withering of all life and the rebirth come every year. Like a lullaby.

A Perfect Circle - The voice of James Maynard Keenan gives this band a soul and shows it off with style. He can convey so many emotions with so little apparent effort. Favorite song, The Nurse Who Loved Me. It is the song shared between me and someone whom I hold dearer than life itself. How fitting that she is a nurse. This is the only song that brings tears to my eyes.

GG Allin

I dont presume to believe my musical preferences are superior to anyone elses, and I fully love the fact that musical tastes are subjective, and that it is that very diversity wich makes music special and unique among the arts...

But how in the fuck can you love GG Allin?!

Is it the disgusting acts of fecal frenzy?

Various things he would shove in his ass?

The poo, that he so lovingly threw at audiences?

Such classic songs as "Ten Year Old Fuck"?

Or is it the copropheliac heroin junkie horrible musicianship that you enjoy?

The two best memories of him Ive heard of are when he waltzed into a record store attempting to promote his album.
The record store owner would have taken him more seriously if he hadnt been covered in shit.
The mystery always was, was it his shit, or someone elses?

The other is a quote of GG, asking the crowd for drugs:

"Either share em to me...or give em to me...or GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY LIFE!"

Classic wisdom from a piece of shit of the highest calibre.

Done.

I checked out "agoraphobic Nosebleed"

A bit like Slayer and Ministry had a lovechild, and then fed it some Meth.

Not bad, but a bit too much for me.

Then again, anything faster and heavier than "Reign in Blood", and I get bored.

These days, about the heaviest bands I like are Astroqueen, and the like.

To sum up: Ive heard worse.

Heh, none whatsoever.

Lots of screeching, and very, very fast riffs, with almost "doomy" guitars.

and by "doomy", I mean that Sabbathy-like guitar distortion, only this was played blisteringly fast, and most "doom-metal" isnt.

I guess, once again its preference.

I dont think his music was at all good.
In fact, I think its nearly the definition of the word "suck".
Poorly played instruments, with very little actual talent.
I like punk.....that just sucks.

As for his shows, GG is remembered more for his throwing, or rolling about in, or eating, or otherwise involving a lot of fecal matter.
Thats not showmanship...thats making oneself a spectacle of the most degenrate kind.

I guess, once again its preference.
TrueI dont think his music was at all good.
In fact, I think its nearly the definition of the word "suck".
Poorly played instruments, with very little actual talent.I in no way meant to imply otherwise. But that doesn't mean his music isn't hillarious.I like punk.....that just sucks.OK, you lost me there. As for his shows, GG is remembered more for his throwing, or rolling about in, or eating, or otherwise involving a lot of fecal matter.
Thats not showmanship...thats making oneself a spectacle of the most degenrate kind.Don't forget lots & lots of random violence. I'm curious though.. What's wrong with GG-style degenerate spectacles? It's not like people were forced to be there.Thats not art.Who said anything about art? Moreover, who died & made you the judge of that? :p

I seriously don't see the problem with his works. Now, long after his death, he still manages to make me laugh. The only unfunny thing about him, was his fucked up life off stage.

Seriously though.. Promoting a release by walking into a record store wearing feces. How is that not pure brilliance? Hell, I wish I'd thought of that.

Heh, none whatsoever.

Lots of screeching, and very, very fast riffs, with almost "doomy" guitars.

and by "doomy", I mean that Sabbathy-like guitar distortion, only this was played blisteringly fast, and most "doom-metal" isnt.

Similar to some Eyehategod stuff, then?
