Immigration Issues

This morning I read an article in the Idaho Statesmen about how Sen. Larry Craig (R) got heckled at a town meeting after declaring his support for a guest worker program. To me, this is a non-issue. The point is, these people are ILLEGAL immigrants. If we want them to work for us, then we should give them citizenship, and if we don't, we should get rid of them. None of this half-ass nonsense. Now, if you want to change the law and allow anyone into the US, that's a different issue altogether. Anyway, to me, the real culprits are the companies that hire these people. The main reason people come to the US is because of the job opportunities. If we don't want Mexicans, or any other group of poeple for that matter, to cross the border, we should condemn those who give them the insentive to do so.

OP is correct. Let more immigrants become legal citizens with all the rights and responsibilities attatched to that status, but don't go half-ass and invite guest workers. Look at what happens in European guest worker programs. People show up and they don't leave, meanwhile they're not accorded the rights of citizenship and feel disenfranchised and hostile. If we genuinely need the workers, let more people become citizens. If companies just want cheap labor, they can move their operations to sub saharan Africa or something. Those people could use the starvation-level wages.
