You can no longer get the benefits at work unless you're married, if you're in a state that allows gay marriage.

Like all those heterosexuals who couldn't get benefits when living together without being married, now the homosexuals are going to be forced to marry in order to get partner benefits.

Welcome to the big world of marriage and its legal obligations.

Welcome to the big world of marriage and its legal obligations.

The people who want to get married don't mind.

What's really exciting is that the recently passed Prop 2 in Texas, which was supposed to get rid of the possibility of Gay marriage, actually got rid of Common Law marriage as well.

I'm still giggling.

Yes, but it probably irritates people who had domestic partners and didn't want to get married. Go figure.

I always thought that common law marriage was farcical.

Makes sense as long as they contain it to states where gay marriage is legal.

Out of interest, why do you think common law marriage is farcical?

Did this really happen? So all common law marriages in Texas are now not legal? Thats a pretty big thing to miss......even in Texas law makers can't be that stupid.

Linky?

Proposition 2 states that Texas will no longer recognize any institution that is "marriage like", but isn't a "marriage". That means no more Common Law marriages, no more elderly brother and sisters forming contracts to take care of each other in death, and no Gay marriage.

It's just a matter of time before it hits the courts. A friend of mine already took advantage of it when she decided to leave her live in boyfriend. He claimed they were Common Law married because they filed joint taxes, but the divorce court said, "Sorry, Prop 2 got rid of that" and she was free to go with her money, her stuff, and her kids.

No link. Sorry.

In the face of the "ickiness" of Gay marriage, people do get stupid.

The language of Prop 2:

"The constitutional amendment providing that marriage in this state consists only of the union of one man and one woman and prohibiting this state or a political subdivision of this state from creating or recognizing any legal status identical or similar to marriage."

It used to be law in Texas that if you spent the night with a woman in a hotel, you were married to her. If you were already married to another woman, you were committing bigamy. Other states require that you live with her as long as seven years - but the result is the same - you're married whether you want to or not.

I believe you should at least apply for a license.
