I'm a singer, and I have terrible allergies. Given that, for me to smoke would be profoundly stupid. (Not that it's a terribly sensible habit, anyway, of course, but it's at least somewhat less dumb if you don't need your lungs and vocal cords to make your living, and if it doesn't prevent you from breathing for at least 24 hours per whiff.)

If I were to smoke, there's a chance I could die, and not like 'oh noes, I have an increased chance at lung cancer' kind of 'dying' either, I have weak lungs and Asthma and the physical act of smoking could cause me to asphyxiate.
Even second hand smoke makes it hard for me to breathe.

I do believe people should be allowed to smoke in their own homes, or in smoking only areas (A smokers park perhaps, smoking only restaurants/bars, a 'smoking section' seperated and on a different air circulation system from the non-smoking section)

Good choice. I smoked for twenty years, but it felt terrific when I finally kicked it.
It takes willpower, not Big Brother doing the heavy lifting for you.
I'm agreeing only up to the point of banning it for government employees and prison inmates.

An image for you: the Baccy Police with sniffer dogs, patrolling the streets and parks. Chewing tobacco makes a big comeback, cos it's easier to hide. There are gobs of brown spit everywhere, instead of cigarette butts. Black market dentists who won't turn you in for being an addict. Ah, progress.

No. I don't. Smoking is an irrational activity that's been exploited by big business that profit off of habits that increase suffering and pain to those who do it and to those who are intimately affiliated with those who do it.

There are no (credible) objective benefits to it; only objective harms.

No.

And I know how to "save the children" from the evils of smoking too. No laws. No advertising bans. No special taxes. No DARE or other similar types programs. All it takes is one special topics class in the dissection of human cadavers for anatomical study, preferably where the subject died of lung cancer. Convinced me, anyway. Having the dangers described is one thing. Being, by the end of the semester, throughly saturated in the stink of it, is another.

Not coercion, but education and rational persuasion. That's the key.

I am an honest smoker in the fact that I will readily admit I enjoy smoking. I enjoy the nicotine hit I feel at the back of my throat from every drag. I don't smoke round my kids and I always ask when with company if people mind if I smoke. This has nothing to do with conciense but more to do with politeness. When it starts to affect my health I probably will give up. The only thing I hate about my habit is the cost.

Do you smoke?

I might like to smoke an occassional nice cigar from a certain somewhere, but I'd be admitting to engaging in a crime if I did, so, no I don't. ;)

Whenever I might smoke one of these illegal contraband cigars (which can be purchased legally here but remain a crime for me to purchase under my state of citizenship - anyone noticing a pattern of resentment here...), I make absolutely sure that I do so in a manner that avoids contaminating the air for others - as I consider secondhand smoke to be the equivilant of assault and battery.

As for general tobacco use, a plug or dip is fine and dandy, and I indulge on occassions when I can get it.

I can't stand smoking! Smokers seem to think that just because they are outside, it does not effect anyone else. This is completely untrue! It's called diffusion. Smoke travels through the air horizontally as well. If someone is smoking thirty feet away from me, I end up breathing in the thick, smelly, and disgusting smoke. Additionally, I happen to be allergic to cigarette smoke (and I knew many people who are), so when I have been accidentally inhaling the stuff for about two miunutes or more, I actually start to get very nautious and, after about five minutes, throw up. It is so terribly selfish that people think it's okay.

Did you know that according to the Surgeon General, a child spending one hour in a car with a smoker with the windows open is equivalent to that child smoking ten cigarettes themselves! It's sick, purely sick.

Pfft, where's the 'I used to smoke when I was <insert age here> but now I only do it when I'm utterly pished' option?

I'm well aware it's bad for your health. I've seen the lungs of smokers post mortem. I've seen the effects of lung cancer, throat cancer advanced emphysema. Yet no matter what I do, put me in a room of smokers when I'm really pissed (when there's no weed about) and I'll bum at least a cig from someone. I think it's horrible too; sometimes I think a couple of my mates give me fags when I'm drunk so they can tell me to quit whining about their smoking because I do it too.

Actually, he is right to a limited extent. Nazi scientists were the first in the world to suggest a link between the rise in cigarette consumption and the increased number of lung cancer victims. The nazi govt. was the most anti-smoking government of its time.

Where he goes wrong is that there's fairly conclusive evidence that smoking a stick full of carcinogens might just give you cancer, hence it's not bullshit.

Yes, but possibly no more than they would have been living in the city. Especially if they went to bars fairly regularly.

I'm not saying smoking isn't harmful. Far from it, in fact, I've read that something like 50% of smokers will die early from a smoking-related illness. I'm just saying that if you either smoke rarely, or quit smoking before too long, your chances of contracting a smoking-related disease are greatly reduced. One cigarette will not kill you and you'd be damned unlucky to develop carcinoma.

See, that's just splitting hairs. Holding your breath for an extended period of time affects your health. Picking your nose affects your health. Hell, breathing in and out in a modern climate affects your health. Smoking regularly is something to worry about. Smoking once, purely to see what it's like, isn't.

Never picked up a cigarette. Marrying a woman who also hasn't. Frankly, there are a few things i personally don't approve of, and among them are cigarettes and alcohol. I wouldn't shed a tear if either of them were outlawed completely, though a total ban on either may cause more harm than good.

However, a fair number of people have allergies to cigarette smoke, including my fiancee, so I am all for smoking bans in a lot of public places. I don't believe that restaurants and places like that have the right to determine whether to allow smoking or not. It's no different from whether a restaurant decides, "Well, that rule about washing hands after using the bathroom...it's stupid and I don't feel like enforcing it. It's my right as the owner." In that case, the rules are there for a reason. I don't want salmonella poisoning, but I don't want to breathe cigarette smoke any more than I want salmonella poisoning.

I won't sit here and pretend to be all virtuous and healthy or anything; as I type this post, I am enjoying Fiery Habanero Doritos and a liter of Coke. I am mostly pretty healthy, having only the occasional cold, a nagging cough, and a broken ankle from February that probably won't even heal correctly. I won't sit here and claim that having one cigarette will give you cancer, any more than forgetting to brush your teeth one night will cause your teeth to rot. I will also say that smoking won't kill everyone; I don't think anyone's trying to make that claim. However, people who smoke often hurt others. I don't know that my penchant for Doritos, chicken wings, and Coke is hurting too many people.

I know, and I really should go easier on the chicken, since my bird might not approve, but then again, he's a Budgie and I've actually read that they, too, eat chicken. It's borderline crazy that a bird would eat another bird...it's almost the same as if I fed St. Bernard to my Yorkie...but then again, humans in general don't object to eating chicken. Hindus condemn eating beef, Jews and Muslims condemn eating pork, and Jews and probably some hardcore Christians condemn eating shellfish. As far as I know, chicken and fish are safe, probably because the preparation of chicken is far less likely to kill you. After all, isn't that how the Old Testament acme to the conclusion that eating pork and shellfish was bad? Because they didn't have the means to heat it to a frooglepoopillion degrees to kill all the harmful bacteria, so people ate it and died, so the people just assumed God didn't want them to eat pork? I might just come to that conclusion at the same time.

Geez, what's with the persecution complex?
It's reflexive, purely reflexive. There's really nobody from Health & Welfare Canada monitoring my behaviour for a Federally-funded study. Honestly.

The problem is that smoking in places like bars, is a health hazard to the people who work there. No amount of smoke-free sections can solve that problem, so ultimately, it's useless to try. It only works if an establishment is completely smoke-free.

But how does one solve this, without creating new problems? Smokers obviously needs places to hang out, just like everyone else. Smoking employees prolly won't have any great qualms about working in a second-hand smoke environment.
Yet from a business perspective, it's a lousy idea to outlaw smoking in an establishment. It'll do away with half the potential profits. And what about the non-smoking workers? Should they get hazard pay, seeing as they're much more likely die in agony at a much younger age? And what about the modern countries where we have public healthcare? Employees exposed to second-hand smoke will likely be much more of a burden on the health care system than everyone else, so should the employers pay a special health care tax?

The allergic fiancé shite doesn't concern me in the slightest. She's not forced to hang out with smokers. If she actively seeks out their company, then it's her problem, not theirs. Or would you have them flee from place to place, chased by people with respiratory problems? Don't be absurd.

A ban on smoking in public places is only warrented when it's public places people have to go, that aren't in open air. Beyond that it's just harasment.

Smoked a pack and a half a day or more from 1972 thru 1982. Haven't smoked a cig since. No such thing as casual smoking for me personally. Quitting smoking was the hardest thing I think I've ever had to do.

Especially bars, because more people smoke socially than simply because they like smoking. Beer in one hand, cigarette in the other, its the same at any bar where smoking is allowed.

I don't get the whole social smoking thing. A lot of my friends have done it, and always feel rough the next day.

I can't stand smoke myself.

They feel "rough" the next day? That sounds more like they were gettin blitzed with some blueberry than smoking cigarettes...

Damm, I voted YES.
But I don't smoke cigarettes, I thought this topic was about weed.

Okay, so take one away from the yes column and put on the NO.

No weed doesn't count because cigarette smokers average a pack a day, I know people that smoke 2 packs a day.
They smoke cigarettes in public.
On the other hand, I average about half a blunt/ 10 bong rips a day and it does done away from normal people, so no one gets bothered by second hand smoke.

Depends. If it's a nice quality cigar, sure. Or weed. But never a cigarette. I'm afraid of those.
