AC/DC... Rock Legend... Or Rock Flop?

Hey everyone. I was just dealing with some issues while listening to AC/DC, and I started to think: "I wonder what other people think of this band? Do they think it's a Rock Legend, or a Rock Flop? So, if you have time, please vote on the poll. If you have even more time, coudl you post your favorite song? Thanks for reading. :)

They are definitely rock legends, but I can't listen to more than three songs of theirs in a row without getting bored.

Yeah, subtlety wasn't exactly their strong suit, but what they did, they did very, very well, and man does Angus Young know how to write a catchy riff.

I figure a legendary band is one that has had enough success so that their music is instantly recognizable across generations, and AC/DC certainly fills that bill.

Thunder, thunder, thunder, thunder
I was caught
In the middle of a railroad track
I looked round
And I knew there was no turning back
My mind raced
And I thought what could I do
And I knew
There was no help, no help from you
Sound of the drums
Beating in my heart
The thunder of guns
Tore me apart
You've been
Thunderstruck

Rode down the highway
Broke the limit, we hit the ton
Went through to Texas, yeah Texas, and we had some fun
We met some girls
Some dancers who gave a good time
Broke all the rules
Played all the fools
Yeah yeah they, they, they blew our minds
And I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please
Yeah them ladies were too kind
You've been
Thunderstruck

I was shaking at the knees
Could I come again please

Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
It's alright, we're doin' fine
It's alright, we're doin' fine, fine, fine
Thunderstruck, yeah, yeah, yeah
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, baby, baby
Thunderstruck, you've been Thunderstruck
Thunderstruck, Thunderstruck
You've been Thunderstruck

Back in Black

Back in black, I hit the sack,
I've been too long, I'm glad to be back
Yes I'm let loose from the noose,
That's kept me hangin' about
I been livin like a star 'cause it's gettin' me high,
Forget the hearse, 'cause I never die
I got nine lives, cat's eyes
abusing every one of them and running wild

[Chorus]
'Cause I'm back! Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm back! Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm baaack, baaack...
Well, I'm back in black,
Yes, I'm back in black!

Back in a band,i got Cadillac,
Number one with a bullet, I'm a power pack
Yes I'm in a band with a gang,
they gotta catch me if they want me to hang
'Cause I'm back on the track and I'm beatin' the flack,
Nobody's gonna get me on another rap
So look at me now, I'm just a makin' my pay,
Don't try to push your luck, just get outta my way

[Chorus]
'Cause I'm back! Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm back! Yeah, I'm back!
Well, I'm baaack, baaack...
Well, I'm back in black,
Yes, I'm back in black!
Let's go!

[Solo]

[Chorus]
Well, I'm back! Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm back! Yes, I'm back!
Well, I'm baaack, baaack...
Well, I'm back in black,
Yes, I'm back in black-ow!

Aww yeah! Let's go!
Keep on goin'! Yeah yeah!
Yeah... aww yeah yeah!
Here we go!

[Chorus]
Well, I'm baaack... (I'm back!)
Baaack... (Well, I'm back!)
Baaack... (I'm back!)
Baaack... (I'm back!)
Baaack... (I'm back!)

My fav because i love the bag pipes...

Ridin' down the highway
Goin' to a show
Stop in all the byways
Playin' rock 'n' roll
Gettin' robbed
Gettin' stoned
Gettin' beat up
Broken boned
Gettin' had
Gettin' took
I tell you folks
It's harder than it looks

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you think it's easy doin' one night stands
Try playin' in a rock roll band
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll

Hotel motel
Make you wanna cry
Lady do the hard sell
Know the reason why
Gettin' old
Gettin' grey
Gettin' ripped off
Under-paid
Gettin' sold
Second hand
That's how it goes
Playin' in a band

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you wanna be a star of stage and screen
Look out it's rough and mean

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll

Well it's a long way
It's a long way, you should've told me
It's a long way, such a long way

of course they sounded better with bon...and of course they are rock legends...just off the top of my head i can think of several songs that will be played years from now...(shook me all night long, TNT, for those about to rock, back in black, highway to hell, who made who) even if you're not into thekir style..whic I admit was a little at times, you have to respect the fact hat they are just one of those bands that everyone has heard of...musically, i would say they were a lot less talented than a lot of other roups, but they compensated for that by not really trying to outplay them, just out entertain them...which is what rock is about more than pure musicianship

sorry that is so long i tend to overanalyze late at night when the insonia kicks in and there is no one to tell me to shut the hell up

I think their music of late has become pretty tired, but tracks like Jailbreak, You Shook Me All Night Long, Long Way To The Shop (If You Want A Sausage Roll), Back In Black, Hells Bells, etc are great rock anthems.

Personally, I dislike them...their songs all sound alike.

The fact that I could probably fill in for their drummer on 12 hours notice doesn't win them any points either.

It's bar-rock...and it's bar-rock done well, but unfortunatley, that just makes AC/DC an older, slightly more original version of Godsmack or Puddle of Mudd....subpar at best, annoyingly grating at worst.

AC/DC under Bon Scott is some of the best blues driven hard rock ever. Under Johnson it became so much of a cliche, they were lampooning themselves by the late 80s.

Stiff Upper Lip has at least seen them return to their slower, mid-tempo blues heavy rock

Overplayed, adolescent drivel that really ought to have found a home in the "where are they now?" category. Why their music is still in high-rotation airplay is a mystery. Best get Shaggy and Scooby on the job. It'll probably turn out to be Old Man Jenkins, who in turn will actually be Bon Scott in a rubber mask.

AC/DC is one of those bands that people too easily dismiss as average, or worse.
Everyone has a preference as to wich singer they prefer, and personally mine is Bon Scott.
I personally think Johnson was balls-out singer, who did his best, although his voice annoys the shit out of me.

Too many people compare them to other bands, and decide that they arent as good as the band that they are being compared to.
I say that it very much depends on what youre listening to them for.

AC/DC is not Pink Floyd.
You wont hear "Theme albums" or psychedelic instrumentation.
You wont hear epic songs done in multiple parts

AC/DC is not Metallica:
You will not hear blistering guitar pyrotechnics, and thunderously fast riffs, played as fast as humanly possible.

What you WILL hear, is heavy blues-rock, and for what the music is, they did it well.

They quickly became too "anthemic" after Scott died, and later became a parody of themselves, but that happens to every good band eventually.

Are they the best rock band ever?
Hardly.

But are they worthy of being called "Rock Legends?"......absolutely.

It really all depends on what youre looking for.

I agree 100%.

I will say that under Johnson they did have a couple of great albums, but quickly became a parody of themselves.

By the 90's however, Johnsons voice had been blown out from the power he put into it, and on thier last several albums, just sounds like shit.

Im trying to be fair to them, as Ive never been much of a fan, but I just hate to hear people unfairly dismissing thier stuff.

Oksy, view me as a dispassionate observer in that I don't care much for AC/DC. never thought much of their music and in fact grew up disliking it cause I associated with bogans I intensely disliked.
Indeed the only two AC/DC songs I like are "long way to the top" and "Jailbreak". And I only like those two cause I have the Motorhead cover of the first and the Shellac cover of the 2nd. I don't listen to the originals.

However...
Rock flop?
A band that's over 30 years old, and has (according to their website) sold over 150 million albums worldwide. Their 1980 album Back in Black has sold 42 million units worldwide (21 million in the US alone) and is the second highest selling album of all time. It was certified 19x Platinum in 2001.

Not many bands can survive the death of a popular lead man and keep their popularity.

My favorite album will always be "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" and the title song will always be my favorite. But Angus Young came along and penned my second favorite "Back in Black."

Top four favorite songs:

1. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
2. Back in Black
3. Big Balls
4. Hell's Bells

I crack up my friends by singing like Cartman from South Park in a rendition of "Hell's Bells." It's really disturbing that Cartman's voice lends some strange sense of perspective to the song. I can actually imagine Eric Cartman being an AC/DC fan. Weird I know, but one thinks about these things when you have too much time on your hands.

Ride On

It's another lonely evening
And another lonely town
But I ain't too young to worry
And I ain't too old to cry
When a woman gets me down
Got another empty bottle
And another empty bed
Ain't too young to admit it
And I'm not too old to lie
I'm just another empty head

That's why I'm lonely
I'm so lonely
But I know what I'm gonna do

I'm gonna ride on
Ride on
Ride on, standing on the edge of the road
Ride on, thumb in the air
Ride on, one of these days I'm gonna
Ride on, change my evil ways
Till then I'll just keep dragging on

Broke another promise
And I broke another heart
But I ain't too young to realize
That I ain't too old to try
Try to get back to the start
And it's another red light nightmare
Another red light street
And I ain't too old to hurry
Cause I ain't too old to die
But I sure am hard to beat

But I'm lonely
Lord I'm lonely
What am I gonna do

Ride on
Ride on, got myself a one-way ticket
Ride on
Ride on, going the wrong way
Ride on, gonna change my evil ways
Ride on, one of these days
One of these days

Ride on
Ride on
I'm gonna ride on
Ride on, looking for a truck
Ride on
Ride on, keep on riding
Riding on and on and on

After I looked up "onanist", I decided maybe I took you wrong.
Then I decided that youre possessed of a narrow mind towards music.
You like what you like, and everything else is shit.

"Music Nazi".

Im not saying that these guys are virtuosos, or that the music they play is wildly innovative or requires a tremendous amount of skill to play, but someimes simplicity can be appealing to many.
Straight-forward blues driven riff-heavy rock.

Theres far, far worse to treat so scathingly.

Sometimes, if lighten up a bit, and allow yourself to enjoy something, you just might.

I suppose im fairly neutral on AC/DC.
I neither love them, nor hate them.
Except Brian Johnson..him I hate.
