Turn Me On To a New Band

In reading another thread, I realised that I haven't come to enjoy any bands on the recommendations of any NSers. I am bored and exploring Yahoo Music, so this is the perfect opportunity.

Recommend a band I haven't heard so I can listen to them. I will give my honest opinion and hopefully find something new to listen to.

Keep in mind that I have heard a lot.

Ever tried !!!? I recommend their album, "Louden up now". They were also voted the "most difficult band to Google for", so that should help you find out some info on them. Or not.

Heard of 'em, never listened to them.

Yahoo Music doesn't have "Louden Up Now" so I am listening to their 2001 self-titled album.

Sex Mob, they're free/funk jazz group that does a lot of popular tunes, but as free/funk jazz. They even did the Macarena as a durge. "Plays Bond" is my current favorite, but it's all good baby.

Not that anyone cares about the bands I list on these things...

Normally, on the subject of music, I am as reprehensible and vicious a shitbag as all the troll flamebaiters I hate.

Yet, something in the plaintiveness of your question soothes my usually mordant outlook concerning music...

What kinds (genres, artists, trends, etc.) of music have you preferred, or fixated on, in the past? Best to let us know.

Otherwise, the recommendations could get pretty hairy. And the results could be more disappointing than not.

Regardless, good luck:)

Mindset, I didn't listen to Louden Up Now, but their earlier stuff reminded me of Talking Heads. I cannot say that I enjoyed them anywhere near as much as I enjoy the Talking Heads, but they are interesting nonetheless. Hopefully I will get a chance to hear Louden Up Now.

I dont know what you are into for music but I like Prong. They are not a new band but pretty unheard of....at least around here.

I listened to them, and for some reason they made me think of another mid-90's band that I literally hadn't thought of in years: Orange 9mm. They don't really sound that similar, but I have to say that Orange 9mm was better.

Ahhh, hell.

Okay. Try this band, though I don't know if they're available on the inertweb at all. Being a compu-tard, I wouldn't know where to look for them.

they're called the Tyrades. They are punk rock. Or at least they were when I knew them.

They are at least nine years old, in various lineups and incarnations, though. I assume when you said "new", you meant "unheard by me until now", right?

Oh, also try the Clone Defects and the A-Frames. I think they're both still around.

I honestly listen to everything.

My most recent mixtape had The Spinners, Ratatat, Gram Parsons, Gnarls Barkley, The Foo Fighters, A Song from the Cold Mountain Soundtrack, Al Green, Van Morrison, and Art Brut.

To the guy with the super long name that starts with a K,

I listen to the Tyrades and was umimpressed, but I really like Clone Defects.

The more a punk band sounds like the Stooges, the more I like them, and these guys get close. Good mix of 60's garage rock as well.

They sound fantastic after a couple of songs.

Their main MC sounds alot like Common, maybe a little like Mos Def, which is a very good thing.

EDIT: "If It Wasn't For You" is the first song I have listened to twice so far. Great Recommendation.

Yeah, they were fantastic live, too. And the singer is a dead ringer for Cheetah Chrome from the Dead Boys, uglified as hell.

In terms of actual "music", would I be out of line to suggest really old Sinead O'Connor, or is that way too played-out and obvious?

I never know what it is that normal humans listen to, for the most part, as I (mostly) spend my time enjoying...not-music.

They are OK, enjoyable, but a little disposable.

They do a lot of very different songs with a lot of different people. I really like "The Truth" and "A Day In The Life". "The Truth" is on their other album, though.

If you go here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00001ZWEF/002-4783262-4308005?v=glance&n=5174) you can check out clips of songs from their other album.

Yeah. They're way past their prime. Their best work IMO is their original EP from 1991, P'tangYangKipperBangUh. If they were from Seattle, they would have been famous. Their first three LP's are good though, but I think they're best as a live band.

Anyway, if you can stand heaviness/weirdness, try-

Boris - Amplifier Worship
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
Sunn O))) - Black One

Should be able to find them on Soulseek or something.

Lazyness had a lot to do with it. I wasn't doing anything that night and a friend who was a salesman for a distributer had some tickets and had to go so he asked if I would. I wasn't really into the band but wasn't doing anything else, so seeing as there'd be weed involved I agreed to go. It was a Filmore show and I'm always down to go to the Filmore. Turns out they where filming a video (there was a guy who was filming a video of his own during the concert itself and whatzhisname, Dylans son, gave him some gaff tape so that he wouldn't know the guy had a camera.) My friend saw it and said if you knew we where there you could make us out but that we where more or less just a spec in the back. We're in the balcony in the back corner.

A friend of mine recommends them highly.

I think they no longer exist, one of thier founders now working in High On Fire or some such.

But I have been told that Sleep's "Jerusalem" is bizarre as hell. One 49-minute song. Downtuned and heavy as hell.

i am not going to say that anyone is the best band ever, b/c i tend to go on spurts with bands...right now, for example, i have been trying to get my hands on OAR, Chamillionaire, and George Thorogood (and yes, i know those have nothing to do with each other...sue me)

but a good way to find new music is to use limewire or whatever software you have, search for the genre you're in the mood for, and download a song or artist you've never heard of...its easier than going off of "best band ever" claims from ppl online you have never met.

EDIT;
by George Thorogood, i mean his good stuff...not bad to the bone, which is on the radio all the time, but some of his better songs; e.g.; one bourbon, one scotch one beer...or Get a haircut and get a real job

Indeed. :) Sleep are cool, but the only problem is that their body of work is a little small.

Oh, Christ. I could never deal.

The shite I listen to is never over a minute-forty.

Then again, it's not so much "music" as it is "synchopated shouting".

Jon likely does have the xtd. version, he's something of a completist.

Last guy I'd expect to dig Sleep though; as I recall, he's still straightedge after 31 years.

Oh, old music. Vittos, do you like the The Birthday Party? If you've not heard them, might I recommend the song "Mutiny In Heaven"?

A few that I was going to suggest have already been mentioned, so I'll add a few of from a different style of music.

Grandaddy - Under The Western Freeway is my fave album of theirs.

Sodastream - any of their albums are good, A Minor Revival is probably my pick.

Calexico - A Feast Of Wire is a really interesting album.

Pop Will Eat Itself - I love the song Eat Me Drink Me Love Me Kill Me from the Karmadrome EP. Dos Dedos Mis Amigos is an excellent album too.

If you look for screaming vocals of a tortured life, discordant overdriven inteligent guitar riffs, music that expresses a range of emotions within one song, funky baselines, songs that often last over 5 minutes and eclectic drumming? Hoover is the one for you. Not to everyone's taste but I absolutely love them... a lot of bands/artists have the same name so look for the album 'The lurid traversal of route 6'. Like I say not everyones taste but I think they're awesome (note: I hate stereotypical emo)

Just off the top of my head I'd recommend:

The Zutons - Who Killed The Zutons? (Haven't heard new album so can't vouch for it)

Morcheeba - Big Calm (seriously chillaxing)

Pulp Fiction Soundtrack - some oldschool goodness

Kill Bill vol 2 Soundtrack - QT does do good music doesn't he? :D

Jamiroquai - any album really, it's all funktacular goodness.

Kinda drying up now, so will stop before I make any sinful suggestions.

Oh, old music. Vittos, do you like the The Birthday Party? If you've not heard them, might I recommend the song "Mutiny In Heaven"?

Again, this might be a tad obvious.

I've loved everything that Nick Cave has done, but I hadn't heard "Mutiny in Heaven," good recommendation.

Animal Collective. They're a tad weird but they have a good beat and they are like very little else out there.

My actual reccomendation (since AC are very 'out there') would be Ladytron.

Electronica music and fairly depressive I guess but very relaxed. The new album Witching Hour is a lot cleaner cut than early ones like 604 although I think they had better early stuff.

I dunno if they count but as an aside I'd also reccomend Motion City Soundtrack. They have a pretty distinctive sound and their songs certainly touched something in me, especially Make Out Kids.

I recommend Small Brown Bike.

Eh, not my type of music.

Ween. Always original, and never boring, and they never ever get stale and repetitive. And at the following site, you can listen to bootleg concert cuts to see if you are ready for one of their albums. Try before you buy. Who else does that?

http://www.weenradio.com/

I'm already a big fan of Ween.

Try some post-rock:
65daysofstatic (but of course)
up+c, down+c, left+c, right+c, abc+start (www.upcdownc.com)
Mogwai (because they're cool)
Sigur Ros (just because...try their latest album, Takk...)
Godspeed You! Black Emperor (if you can stand random junkies spouting conspiracy theories at the beginning of almost every track)
Oceansize (get Everyone Into Position, especially the last track, Ornament/the Last Wrongs)
Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia (just for the name).

All good bands, I hadn't heard of Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia before, but upon listening to them they seem decent, but probably won't stick with me.

To you I recommend:

Animal Collective (http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/release.php?id=172)

Benighted - Technical Brutal Death Metal, tough to listen to
Benighted - Identisick (http://media.putfile.com/Benighted---Identisick)

Dark Tranquillity - Get their Projector Album. These guys are some of the Kings of Melodic Death Metal, though this album takes them in a slightly more symphonic direction.Dark Tranquillity - There In (http://media.putfile.com/Dark-Tranquility---There In)

Porcupine Tree - Think ... Coldplay with a more Progressive Metal feel to their music. VERY technically talented and quite unique.(sorry I don't have this uploaded)

Dragonforce - Power/Speed Metal, amazingly fast and melodic.
(none of this uploaded either.)

Dark Lunacy - Metalcore with a strong amount of Russian influence to their music. Dark Lunacy - Heart of Leningrad (http://media.putfile.com/Dark-Lunacy---Heart-of-Leningrad)

I second the group. I have to admit though, I haven't managed to decide which album I like best. I think it's whichever one I'm listening to at the moment. Right now I'm playing the 2-CD set Hullaballoo. Very under-rated; just because it includes B-sides doesn't mean it's a "B" album. The live recordings on CD-2 are great to have, and having this version of "Hyper Chondriac Music" is worth the price of the set by itself.

So for now, Hullabaloo is my favourite.

Totally agreed. That song got me through the "angry young atheist" phase. Experience and a closer reading of the lyric shows me that what he's talking about is God as it is rammed down the collective throats of religious adherents as opposed to the concept of the Divine itself. Good stuff.

Pansy Division are all very well and good as a joke band, but it starts to wear thin pretty darn quick. If you want a real good queercore band look to Limp Wrist (and check out Los Crudos if they escaped your notice before). Whereas if you want a longer lasting joke band try Wat Tyler.
