Actually no accent is Omaha, midwest. California has several accents. There's, like, ohmygod-Valley. There is surfer, dude. There are innercity accents that border on dialects (that'll start an argument). For the most part it's a softening of hard constanant sounds at the ends of words, like goin' instead of going. It's an accent that trails towards the end. There are some SoCal accents that use long vowel sounds as well (I just worked with a guy who had that one really thick, it was disorienting). Depends on where you're from and your opinion of the word 'hella'.

Heh - speaking as an amateur linguist who follows this stuff, actually, the Midwestern accent is the one newscasters and such are trained to emulate, and which is considered to be the closest to a "general American" accent. The "Californian accent" is just very, very similar to it. I suspect what you're thinking of as the "Midwestern" accent is really the Appalachian/Southern-central type "hillbilly" accent, which is actually fairly rare in the Midwest, except in specific regional pockets. Ahem...Let's start

People that live in the continent of America, including citizens of the United States, call themselves americans, not only the citizens of such States. If America is a continent, and is called as such, then all the inhabitants of such continent should be called americans. Half the people of that continent, counting from the USA-Mexico border, that by the already explained argument are americans, speak spanish, and even to the north, inside the United States border, there is a more than significant minority, (the biggest minority there) that still speaks spanish and are called latinos o Hispanic-Hispanos.

So, half americans speak spanish, perhaps even more, but then US english is called american for reasons I am not aware of.

Hee. The real point is that there's no such thing as someone with "no accent." Accents are in the eye (well, ear) of the beholder - as far as a Texan, an Australian, or a Bostonian is concerned, you probably have a nice thick accent. To me, a Midwesterner, you likely have slight traces of an accent. It's all relative. :)

USA, Canada, Mexico, Greenland, Guatemala, El Salvador, Cuba, República Dominicana, etc. Half the North American continent speaks Spanish.

The generally accepted 'North America' is Canada, America, and Mexico (and I guess Greenland)....thus, more than half speak English.

Central America is usually seperated from North America, in encyclopedias and such.

Hmm, which sounds do you mean exactly?

The harsh gutteral sounds that I have only heard in German, Dutch and Hebrew. I guess it would be some sort of CH sound...we dont have it in English so I dont know how to exlain it in font.

Also the really deep and U that comes from the throat.

I also like how people who speak Dutch and German are able to roll their r's.

Cool language, I approve.:)

Central America is usually considered the souther part of North America, not a separate continent. Like saying Scandinavia and Europe.

Even if we accept your definition of North America, Spanish would be the second language, with between 35 to 40% of speakers.

Aww, see thats what I love about it..Its deep and just dives into the nation.

It inspired me to write one about my nation:

This is the country of;

This is the country of the eagle…. the stripes and stars.
The land which gave us oil shortages for real …..and gas guzzlin cars.

The country which is more… than what we appear
The country that makes the earth our whore…. Because of utter awe and fear.

I’m from the land of the red…the white and blue.
The country which may occasionally lose its head….. but always stay true.

We invaded Iraq with our military….and we are having problems.
But we influenced the rest of the world, behind their backs… some say we robbed them.

This is the country of the fat… the stupid and the apathetic,
Yet we still succeed in ruling the world….. and only some of us regret it.

This is the country where the word segregation…… it came to birth.
We freed our blacks 150 years back as a demonstration…..but still they toil…. in the white mans earth.

This is the country of the American patriot…..who speaks one language.
And is accused by Mandarin hatred…of being brain dead.

This is the land, where people came together …..and a country was born.
But it is the very same land, with our political parties here forever…. that make our country torn.

America is the country …..where the liberators of the world… were born and raised
But it’s the country of their grandsons… that has been swirled…. beat to a daze.

Whatever happened to the foundation of our four fathers?
The country that promised to fight tyranny, injustice, kings…. and German field marshals?

We fight the worlds problems but look past our own.
We forget that the fight for liberation… starts at home.

This is the land of the people, who scream in fear of nipple,
But it’s the very same land, whose people’s screams…. in fear of violence….dont create a ripple.

We glare at Africa and the nations of it on the poverty and AIDs list,
Yet we forget to glance and glare down south at New Orleans…the Africa in our midst.

Most of us would rather see us retreat, run away from our duties,
They say the job that we’re doing isn’t worth what we are losing….a moms teenage beauty.

And even though we have our issues,
This is the country that always overcomes.
And once America pulls out of the Middle East, (we wont miss you),
We will strive to retain our position….our place as number 1.

America, though at times it may seem like your light is fading,
Stay strong, and remember, my heart and soul lie with you…. eternally illuminating.

You now what I think we should all learn russian it's kinda hot. But I speak french to and it's all romantic and fun until you start to learn it its even okay until you get to yr 2 when it's dun dun dun the year of the irregular verb. And it gets worse when you find out there are 50 bajillion tenses this yr i learned the past particple and more of the present and some stupid tense called imperfect or whatever and so I've been told by the end of the upcoming yr were are learning 10 more out of like literaly 50. And they all sound the same if you don't stop to really pay attention of curse it doesn't help if you don't get enough sleep. but i suppose once you think and listen they don't like like with imperfait they all get that ait sound kinda and with pp they all get a verb before them avoir or etre wtfe. So once you start learning it it sounds romantic no longer oh well ther is always spanish and italian.

I often wonder about what language people who speak multiple languages think in.
While the question was not addressed to me, I'd say that the language in which one thinks should correspond to the language with which one is dealing at the moment. Say, when I'm reading a book in German, I'm thinking (or trying to think, considering my weak command of the language) in German. When I'm typing this message, I'm thinking in English. By the way, I've noticed that when one is communicating in (and, therefore, thinking in) a language in which one is not exactly fluent, it often severely limits one's mental capacity.

When not forced to use any foreign language, I'm pretty sure that most people think in their first one. However, if the conditions prevent a person from using their first language on a regular basis, and then they suddenly have to use it once again, their speech is often crammed with foreign words, idioms, structures, etc., even if there are perfect synonyms for these in their first language. Besides, certain people are even proud of such admixtures, often pronouncing foreign words with a distinct accent, as if underlining them, so that the listeners have to ask what do they mean. The speaker then explains the meaning (with fake suprise, and using intentionally broken constructions), full of arrogance with his esoteric knowledge. I personally find such behavior extremely annoying.

P.S. Russian here. Thank you, Amazonian women.

...n.No...No you don't have to be more discreet with what you say in German white texts. Describe evernything...use details.... Oh, good then! *seufz*

Totally should be.

:D I'm so impressed that you actually found a translation engine that'd come up with the word "Totalquatsch", which doesn't exist but which perfectly describes the outcome of running anything through a translation engine. That's some truly impressive self-awareness for a computer program right there.
Oh, and please tell me what the lame pun was, because that one didn't translate (or maybe I just didn't get it).

You're better for not knowing.

EDIT: The word by itself breaks the machine, so I don't know what it was.

You've been down this road before-I say something you don't get, you ask, I tell you it's not worth it and you don't want to know, you pout, I tell you, and then you're like "That was lame" and I'm left going, "Yeah, well it's not like I didn't warn you."
Well, it'd literally be like "totalcrap". :p

Hell, could be. I still haven't gone to bed (9:40 in the AM). I'm not completely sure this isn't a dream. If you start complaining about the lighting then I know I nodded off in front of the computer...

I've always been under the impression that German and English share that interesting ability to create new words. However, German takes it even further by combining pre-existing words into more new words.

Aw, man, did you really have to go and screw it up with the "nsaege"? It actually would have made sense without it! Seriously, tsk, tsk.

Analysis:

a) The Beweis-Ketten-Saege part is where it becomes rhetoric artwork: zeugma.

b) The "saege" ending negates the whole thing...after the chain of words reaching its climax, it crashes abruptly, turning into the opposite. That's quality. Pure poetry in both meanings. Comparable only to Heine's notorious line: "Ich wollt, er schoesse mich tot."

I shall close this with another gem:

I'm not conceited, I'm plain GRAND.

Anadilim Turkce'dir!

My first language is Turkish which hasn't been put in any language family yet. Discussions are going on. The most popular thesis is about the Altaic family which includes Turkish dialects spoken by Azeriis, Uzbeks, Kazhaks, Turkmens, Turkomans and aaaa... Turks (Turkey) of course and some other languages such as Mongolian and Manchurian. It's a large family indeed. One border is China and the other is Greece...

it would be really an interesting experiment. altough it is so systematic syntax, pronounciation, phonetic and the logic of Turkish language are totally different from Indo-European languages. if you start by going over the grammatical rules it would take years and years. but if you have an opportunity to live in Istanbul for a few months while it may be much easier.
i wish you good luck if you have a chance to try!
