Calif. crash kills 2 members of Tonga royalty

July 7, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO - Two royal family members from the tiny South Pacific island nation of Tonga were killed when a teenager racing her car crashed into their sport utility vehicle, authorities said yesterday. Prince Tu'ipelehake, 56, and Princess Kaimana, 46, died Wednesday night, according to Senter Uhilamoelangi, a distant relative and longtime friend of the prince. Uhilamoelangi said the couple had arrived in the area this week to discuss political reforms with members of the region's Tongan community. San Mateo County Coroner Robert Foucrault confirmed the deaths. The driver of the red Ford Explorer carrying the two also was killed, the California Highway Patrol said. Edith Delgado, 18, of Redwood City, the driver of the other car, was uninjured and was jailed, authorities said.
Well, what a way to learn about a place called Tonga..

Depends if they have a treaty with the US covering this. Otherwise, it should be up to the US to prosecute. But the US can always extradite him anyways, which any good lawyers would fight against.

"Don't street race. You might hit royalty."

"Whatever, square."

That is if she was part of a really contrived after school special. Using dated slang.

Though you have to imagine that the yelling that shes getting now is pretty sureal. "You went street racing and hit a fucking diplomat! Nice fucking job, I knew you'd fuck up, but cause an international incident? I honestly don't know how you could have fucked up more." That last parts true, it's hard to top killing a diplomat in a street race.

I just drove through Redwood City. I had nothing to do with this (no one races VW Vans....unless they have esteem issues and are looking for an easy boost.)

Street racers put racing seats and harnesses in their cars. If she also does 'legit' racing she might even have a roll cage bolted in the car. Most of that stuff is 'show' not 'go' but if she runs autocrosses or sanctioned drags she might have the real deal in her car.

Edith Delgado, 18, of Redwood City, allegedly was racing her car at speeds up to 100 mph on a highway in Menlo Park, about 30 miles south of San Francisco, when she tried to pass the SUV in which the royal couple was traveling, said highway patrol Officer Ricky Franklin.

Delgado's car slammed into the driver's side of the Explorer, causing it to swerve across several lanes before tumbling to a stop on its roof, Franklin said.

Delgado, who was not injured, was jailed on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and engaging in a speed contest, Franklin said.
That's how she survived, she just sideswiped them and SUV dynamics took over. I don't feel like copying from more articles I've found, but she was in a Mustang, which is a mid-size car.

Actually they where:
According to the CHP, the Mustang driven by Delgado tried to pass the Explorer and struck the sport-utility vehicle on the driver's side. The Explorer swerved out of control and overturned ``an unknown number of times'' before coming to a rest on its roof in the right shoulder of the highway.

The driver and both passengers, all wearing safety belts, died at the scene. The coroner has yet to determine the cause of their deaths.

The wreck shut down two lanes of northbound 101 for two hours Wednesday night.

Authorities said Delgado, who was not injured, stopped at the scene. Bail was set at $300,000, and she was scheduled for arraignment in Superior Court at 1:30 p.m. today.

She has no record of accidents or license suspensions, but had been ticketed in November for driving without a license and in December for littering.

Diana Reddy, assistant to the superintendent at Sequoia Union High School District, said Delgado was a senior in the district, but would not say whether she had just graduated or which school she had attended. Delgado's mother told district officials she did not wish to comment on the incident, Reddy said.

CHP investigators said they believe Delgado may have been racing with another driver, and they were seeking information on a black Cadillac Escalade with ``spinner-type rims'' that exited at Marsh Road just north of Willow Road and ``may have seen or been involved with this collision.''

A Mustang vs. an Escalade? And it's the Mustang that fucked up? Crazy...

Oh hell yeah, they're never going to find that truck. Lots of trucks like that especially on the peninsula. What it will be, since it's so close to East Palo Alto, is an excuse to pull over and hassle a lot of people. For about a week it's going to suck to drive one of those things. (I think it would suck all the time, but then I didn't buy one.) It's going to be total bullshit because they have no way of knowing which one is the one, just an excuse to hassle.

It rolled over several times, which means they had to be moving a bit themselves, or he wasn't used to driving something like that and jerked the wheel hard to the side. Either way, the impact is going to be sever and the truck heavier so anything short of a roll cage won't do. Part of that blind spot in SUV safety that's made so much of, rollovers and the ability to survive them.

To be fair to SUVs (for god sakes, why...) going fast enough a roll over is going to do you in in just about everything. It's just that the level of 'fast enough' is a little slower than it is in a vehicle with a lower center of gravity. Why the Mustang was able to stay on its wheels even though it was going faster (and the driver was more aware of the impending crisis).

Well, I'll have to disappoint you on this - she kinda scared me, too. :p But I'm sure Aelosia will find some wrath to spare for you. ;)
As you well know, if she knows any torch songs it's all good.

Or plays the cello.

Or sings torch songs while she plays the cello.

Man that would be hot...

...I have to go...

Amazingly, I can play the cello. I was almost going pro when I stopped doing it formally, so I can guess by other's opinions that I was fairly, if not wonderfully, good at it. Thanks to it, I went on tour with the orchestra I was with and had the chance to know most of South America and several other spots in the world, like China, or the US. Sadly, my choice was university over the cello. I still try to play Elgar's concerto once in while, but my skill has been decreasing with time.

I have no idea of what a torch song is, although

I could give you a keen example but then someone might try and kill me despite being very far away. Since she makes friends easily I'm not going to risk it.

Breathy, smoky songs sung by world weary singers in dark clubs. Marlene Dietrich kind of thing.

Oh my God, you'll never get him off you now.

Between Miss Holy See with the amazing singing and you playing the cello, Ctoan is a goner.

A torch song is that kind of breathy, pining song of lost love that sultry women with smokey voices sing in empty bars. Something like that. He keeps explaining it, but I can never get it quite right.

Also, I'm jealous about the cello - I played the violin for years (don't remember a thing) and would have liked the cello so much better. Parents. Hrmph. I *love* the cello, it's my favourite instrument to listen to.

I'm not that bad. At the very least I'm limited by geography and poor career planning. And that I can't ever remember peoples names.

I do not know who are you talking about, but I can protect you if you come here, in any case. :D

I used to sing tango songs, they are fairly similar to what you describe, if I am right about that Marlene Dietrich thing, with a latin touch. As my voice is more similar to a man's than to a woman's (one of my main complexes), those were the only ones I was fit to sing.

I liked the violin, too, although my love was for the piano, but again I proved to be better in the cello, so I kept doing that. I am pretty sure that if you practice again you can come up with something...

One of my former boyfriends had the same cello fetish, although he took it a little further...Everyone has fetishes, so no problem with that.

You really don't want to know how far I'm willing to take that...

And as it turns out, tangos are pefectly acceptable.

I wanted to play a stringed instrument (guess) but apparently I was meant only for the saxophone. If I hadn't gotten stalled in college I'd still be trying to make my way with that thing.

Sometimes I have heard the sound of a sax described as "vulvar", which I have always find accurate.

In response to what you said about your ex.

The alto is a premadonna's horn, uptight and showy. It's the horn that looks at itself in the mirror.

The tenor sax is foreplay. It cares about you and wants to touch you gently. All over.

The Bari is fuckin'. All business. Driving like a steamtrain. It can be delicate in the right hands, but it can also be a heavy hammer. The best players know when to do each.

We all start on the alto, I played the tenor most of my time as a musician and ended on the bari, which is by far my favorite.

Damn...
I bet it was some US Government conspiracy to overthrow the Tongan Government which is Pro Chinese.-Actually it might be Pro Chinese Tipae...
There has been major unrest in Tonga lately so much that the King of Tonga's NZ residence was attacked by a Crazed man in a car.
Tonga gets funds from China in return for as of now a bit of regional influence.
If the Royal family is gone America can 'place' a more 'aceptable' 'government' in 'power' and curb the yellow wave descending on thje pacific.

Wondrous, that was nice...I prefer the clarinet but the sax is classy.

After that poetic definition I have decided that I like you.

The girl that caused this accident isn't going to get extradited to Tonga. She's an american citizen, and the crime happened here in the US. If she'd plowed through the Tongan embassy and killed someone, then I could see her getting extradited (because the Tongan embassy is technically Tongan soil).

Yeah right, as she is hispanic, and a woman, you are all around the thread asking for her head, and saying that she should be deported. I am sure that if she had been a caucasian male, a WASP, then you will saying it was great that he killed a pair of blacks with dreams of being royalty.

Damn, you americans are too biased...

American weighing in here: I feel horrible for all involved, yes even the girl. She won't be extradicted because the crime happened here. She can't be convicted of treason because she is not a Tongan. She can, however, spend the next 25 years in prison unless the Tongan government calls for mercy. You can't kill royals and get off easy, I don't care how tiny their country is. In order to avoid an international incident, they will most certainly throw the book at her. Which is sad, but whether she realized it or not, she made a choice when she broke the speed limit, and the worst case scenario, of course, happened. No one else can pay the debt she owes society and the country of Tongo except her. Her life is essentially over. If I were her parents I would never stop crying.... =(
