Are there any bands that you got into based on the recommendation of other NSers? Perhaps you could provide a genre for each band that you name for those of us who are unfamiliar. I have a few:

The 13th Floor Elevators ('60s psychedelia)
Slint (noise-rock, similar to the Jesus Lizard)
Kyuss (doomy grunge)
Joy Division (electro-punk)
Laerod

DJ Fishpaw, but that's about it.

Can't say that I have. I tend to either get into music, because it's something put out by a band that I know and appreciate, or I hear the song and feel the need to learn more. Recommendations don't really mean too much to me, since I find that everything is really in the eye (or ear) of the beholder anyway.

Perhaps, however I don't find it's quite the same as recommending a book, or a movie. I find music much more... I don't know, visceral. I find that genre alone isn't enough. I love a variety of music, but tend to focus on hard rock/alternative. There's plenty in that large genre that I don't care for.

If I hear something I like, splendid. That's not to say that I wouldn't listen to something someone recommended, it's that I'm far less likely to go out of my way.

On the radio, in people's cars, in clubs/bars/etc., Muchmusic, or if there's a band who I know I like coming out with a new album, I'll seek it out.

I'm still waiting for Stone Temple Pilots to get back together.... waiting.... :(

Yeah, a conversation would often go something like this;

"Hey, do you like that new song by <insert band name here>?"

"I don't know... who?"

"You know, the song that goes like <insert crappy attempt to describe song>"?

"Yeah, I've probably heard it, but I'd have to hear it to know what you're talking about."

(Much later, I hear the song, and say, 'yeah, that's cool.')

Yes.... lots.

Feist
Delerium
Blackmore's Night
Bran Van 3000
Massive Attack
Portishead
Modest Mouse
And I know there are more, but I'd have to go back and scroll through the list of music to see what I've gotten recently.

Band I discovered I hated, Nightwish. As much as TG, Moo, and assorted others love it, I mute it as soon as possible. :p

I've not heard of the first four, but judging from your reccommendation of ICP, they're probably all crap.

I'm still trying to recruit Smiths fans, but apparently the idea of a theatrical, flamboyant lead singer, who mopes about his life and Oscar Wilde while waving bouquets of gladiolas, is not tempting to most people.
