Do you like football ? (soccer)

Some love it, some hate it. So, what's your opinion on the 'beautiful' game, football (or soccer) and the worlds most popular sport?

I like it a lot. I can't understand those that feel that American 'football' is superior :p

Yeah, great game. I prefer international tournaments like the World Cup to Premership and First Division style stuff, though. I don't follow any particular team; I just enjoy watching a good, well-played match.

Worlds most overrated sport. Both teams have to very good indeed for it to be in anyway interesting.

I understand what you mean but it's not just that. The passion of the supporters involved is massive and many people are besotted with their teams, seeing their team winning even the league cup makes them incredibly happy. Football rocks!

Nothing is superior to baseball. That said, this year's World Cup has brought me a new appreciation for the sport. Too bad it doesn't get televised much in the US.

They go with demand. To my knowledge, ESPN and one other network show the games in the US. Apparently 81% of Britons have watched at least some of the World Cup. I'd be surprised if 18% of Americans had.

I heard something about football being generally being played by women in America. It's not considered a mans game or something like that. With the size of America in theory you should be able to find the best team in the world if the American people took to it.

football (countable and uncountable; plural footballs)

(British) (uncountable) A game in which two teams of eleven players each contend to get a round ball into the other team's goal primarily by kicking the ball with their feet. In amateur games it may be a team of five or six, or indeed any number. (quote from Wikipedia)

You're calling football a wimp sport when American footballers have to wear pads and a helmet. BUNCH OF GIRLS. I must admit though pro footballers always go down at the slightest knock, they're mostly girls also except a few oldies Like Vinnie Jones, to him the pitch was war.

Soccer teams here are, um, not great. Best thing to do for "football" is play it whilst in high school if you like it.

Watching it on TV generally eats a turd. Unless it's a f@kken awesome game like Ghana vs. the Czechs a few ago.

Then again, I'd say the same about American baseball on TV. Boooooring.

Absolutely the best sport ever! I live in St.Pete,Florida and I must say that soccer is an incredibly popular sport to watch and play in my area. However, it does suck a** that the closest club team to anyone down here is in D.C. and Dallas!!!

This is a good thread to start bashing the little girlie sport that many of my polluted friends call "American" Football like its better or something? I mean come on, they get any number of subs, three 30 second timeouts, two minute warning(another timeout), tons of pads, they do more running to get to the next spot on the field than actual play sometimes, and they only play for an hour of gametime! That's not a sport! I must admit that I do enjoy watching only because some of the hits that these guys take are pretty brutal.

I am American and I love soccer/ football. Soccer is the fastest growing sport in America I have heard. And I have played American Football and I dont like it. Hitting people isn't all that great, it is mainly a contest of who is strongest and fastest, not too much skill needed, unless you are receiver (you gotta know how to catch), or quarterback (you gotta throw).

But soccer is way more awesome, it takes skills. FC Barcelona is coming to America to play some teams, I can't wait, and Chelsea is playing the Major League Soccer All-Star team.

How are those sports more fun to watch!?!? Personally I love football (the real kind) because of its speed. In baseball and Am. football, everything happens in spurts. The pitcher pitches then the batter hits, and then 5 seconds later the play is over. In am. football the QB gets the ball, throws it, a catcher catches, and then gets tackled. All this takes about 4 seconds, and then what's this? A fucking flag is on the field. Now all the 30 officials have to come together and debate the matter for fifteen minutes. It is uber-bullshit and you are obviously ignorant.

Heh...over here (England) we call them 'yo-yo teams'. Sunderland are a prime example. The german term is Fahrstuhlmannschaft (elevator team) and they are in "Liga 1.5". Germany has quite a number of these team unfortunately. It makes relegation much less interesting.

Football's amazing, but some of the commentators are just dreadful.

The World Cup has certainly highlighted some problems with the sport, notably the diving by several sides and the persistent and unwarranted interference by its governing body on its referees, but has also shown some superb performances (no, not the diving).

I don't understand baseball whatsoever except as a social drinking phenomenon (in which it excels by default). American football lacks fluidity and takes for f---ing ever. Fun to play as a kid, but not so much to watch. If I want to watch grown men out to batter the hell out of each other, I'll watch Australian Rules Football (if any of the stations here showed it), thanks. Or Rugby.
