What Would You Buy If You Won The Lottery

I got into one of theoretical arguments with a friend last night about to spend money on should either of us win the lotter.

I worked out it would involved several beach houses, a large shoe collection, possible cosmetic surgery, and a very very expensive car. Oh and of course a donation to charity.

£5 million?

Couple of million in the bank so I can live of the interest, the remaining millions I will waste on rubbish.

A fancy little cottage with a garden.
It ain't the original cost, it is the upkeep.

*does some math*
5 Million at 6% would be... 300K per year.

Allright, I'll have a yacht as well.
And several nice getaway holidays every year.
But I'll keep the daytime job.

Pay off the house, buy another near the University of my choice, and go to grad school for the next 5-10 years for a doctorate.

Not grand enough? Perhaps. But ~ 10 million USD only lasts so long. The rest goes into investments so by the time I've got the sheepskin I have more than enough to be set for life.

I'd mount my own bar, and my own book publishing business.

In addition, a big motorhome so I can travel with my friends freely.

And A LOT of hats.

I understand everything except the book publishing. Direct to web is good, and there's almost no margin in it as an industry these days...

As a reader, apart from a writer, I just LOVE the touch and smell of books, the sound of pages turning... even though I read all day, I can't read books online. And MANY others share this odd trait.

Besides, there are many people and institutions who don't own a computer. Think about public libraries, schools, universities. They need physical books.

Online publishing is a good idea, but limited. Ideally, I might as well publish works in both media, copyleft.

A little house by the sea, and start my on business. A European-style cafe combined with a bookshop for international literature somewhere in the Dublin city center.
The rest would go to charity.

Buy a nice little house in the country, with a big garden and preferably a river/stream running through the grounds. Buy numerous cars, including an Aston Martin DB9 and a Ferrari F430, and invest the rest. Oh, and I'd leave whatever is left to charity in my will.

a nice little chunk of land somewhere, preferably forrested and mountainous,

and a rather long shopping list of tools with which to be creative.

sorry, nothing to try and impress anyone.

but whatever was left over would indeed go to causes i beleive in supporting, like alternative media, like my favorite little radio station, and free online galleries like elfwood and vcl.

of course the land would be sufficiently remote i'd probably need some kind of off road vehicule just to go shopping and get back, but nothing fancy, just a used, battered but good running pickup or van with high ground clearance and a really heavy duty suspension. or even just a two wheeler. possibly electric.

oh that shopping list, well it would include things like a direct broadband sattelite link to the internet, solar electric panels and windmills, the latest autocad and 3dsmax, cnc milling machine, sterio lithography tank or other rapid prototyping, full bore injection molding machine, perhaps with low melting point metal capability, seeing as how petrolium based polymers might not be forever either,

at any rate, just a few little odds and ends like that to play with, but the main thing is a little chunk of land somewhere, far enough from desely populated areas that nobody's likely to bitch about what i would like to build on it,

which would be a cross between ananda and train mountain, with a bit of drop city and hippie commune thrown in for good measure.

It would find its niche, too. There are no bookshops here yet selling books in foreign languages, for example. With the large communities of immigrants that Dublin has right now, it would definitely make money...

I would make sure to host lots of little cultural events, too. Bands and artists, authors, maybe roleplay nights, things like that.

How strange that there aren't international bookstores in Dublin. =/

I would get a nice comfortable house in the mountains (where I have neighbors but can't see them through the woods sorta thing, and I want a creek in my back yard, and a hammock), a Lotus Elise, a 1967 Pontiac GTO, a 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500, a pimped out Escalade (I'll keep the GTO and the Elise, my wife can have the GT500 and Escalade), start up a hefty college fund for my kids, a huge plasma TV hooked to a computer thats integrated into my house, make some investments, then throw the rest in the bank and live off the interest.

Edit: The guy above reminded me of the DB9, I love those, might as well buy one too.

I'd like to know where you'd get 6% interest.Obligations possibly.. Also, the more money you have, the higher an interest rate you can get (up to a point)

I'd probably buy a house, a new computer, maybe a server as well. Than invest the rest in various ways (stocks, obligation, securities) and try to live off it the rest of my life.
That's not to say I wouldn't work, just that I wouldn't work because I need the money.

Apart from putting it in the bank, I'd probably just buy a nice house and not worry about getting a job ever again.

Hmm.... (not in any order of time or priority)
-put towards a fairly large nice, comfortable house (or, in short term, an apartment)
-save money for holidays
-sorry, but i'd have to have a huge shopping spree for clothes...
-save money to be able to pay for my degrees I'd like to get, and save/invest the money to run my own private pyschologist's clinic which would be totally free of charge/a very very cheap rate for the public
-regular donations each month to a range of charities
-help out any friends with any problems, and then buy gifts (and save money for regular good gifts at birthdays and christmass and things

A million dollars these days isn't that much. I could go through that in a few days pretty easily (houses, cars, businesses, etc). I know if the lottery was only like 5 million it probably wouldn't cover all the things I had listed above. Make it a billion and it'd take me a while.

First of all, I'd buy a nice house or appartment ( it doesn't hae to be all that fancy, just with enough room and a garden or balcony) so that I don't have to live in this small place I live in now and so that I can live with people that I actually know and like, such as my sister who I'm sure wouldn't decline if I offered her a nice place to live in.
Apart from that, I'd take a nice long holiday right now so I can go visit my boyfriend. I still have to work a bit at the moment before I have enough money to go visit him.
The rest of the money I'd put in the bank for now

Hmm, that's over €7 million. Not too bad.

I'd take €1 or €2 million and use it to pay for all kinds of stuff for myself and my family and friends (settle everybody's debts, new car for my mom, new house for my sister's family, pay my dad back all the money he's paid supporting me all these years, etc., plus maybe buy myself a cool apartment here in the city, and maybe even one of these (http://www.bilrevyen.no/Historie/images/VW_Kaefer_Cabrio_0001_medium.jpg) or/and one of these (http://www.index.hr/images2/NewBeettle.jpg), just because I could. Plus put enough money in some kind of investment or savings account so I had something to fall back on.
Hmmm, okay, that would likely be more than €2 million, but eh.

The rest would go to make up some kind of foundation thingy, and I'd use the interest to support the causes that are most worthy, well thought-through and necessary.

set aside enough of it for my tuition, my sisters future tuition, and my 3 closest friends tuition. After that, I doubt much would be left. Assuming anything was, I'd buy a small house, get a jacuzzi. If there was STILL some left, i would split it in half, invest half, and give the other half to charity.

i wouldnt tell anyone, atleast try not to.

i wouldnt try to change my current life much, maybe fix up my house or renovate, and maybe buy myself a nice computer and tv. i will still work but only because it will prevent me from boredom, but i will cut the hours i work by alot. i will of course give my %10 to my church, but make sure it is anonymous.

i will not give much to charity, but rather do my own random acts of kindness. such as giving a friend an anonymous scholarship. or paying for the repairs of a friends car.

(is it possible to pay someone mortgage for them?)

RETIRE IMMEDIATELY!

Invest enough so that I'd be able to live VERY comfortably forever.

Buy a nice big manor and hire servants to keep it all nice, and to bring me stuff (dinner, drinks, etc).

Form a foundation-like entity for charitable works and pet projects. I can never think of a charity to donate to that really matches my interests and looks legit (or at least, I haven't been able to find one), so I'll BE the charity. As for why not an actual foundation, I've read that they have to be run by an independent board of directors. The heck with that. I want to be completely in charge, and with no board.

10% to my church
10% to my favorite charity
20% for each of my kids in a trust fund (that's 40% all together)

and with the remaining 50% I would buy my dream house and then invest the rest and live off the interest. ;)

What Would You Buy If You Won The Lottery?

Would depend on the amount of course.

1. Pay off all personal debts.
2. Invest for retirement.
3. Pay off immediate relatives' debts.
4. Invest in immediate relatives' retirement.
5. Pay off some friends' debts.
6. If I won $100,000,000 or more I'd like to fund a free neutering and spaying program for dogs and cats in my county.
7. Free spaying and neutering for pet owners who don't have their pets spayed and neutered.

I'd pay off my house and all my debts. Then I would fix up my house, sell it and move to Colorado (my son lives in Denver). There I would buy a nice condo and furnish it and get a good car. I would put the rest in an income account and, between the income from that and my retirement income, I would live a relatively stress-free, pleasant life.

If I won the lottery, I'd purchase the property my grandparents used to own in South Dakota. It was a dairy farm, but I'd probably run it as a beef farm, with a few milkers on the side. It shouldn't cost too much, as land in South Dakota seems relatively cheap, and the farm is run down right now. I'd also pay off my parents mortgage and my older sisters mortgage, buy the '96 Impala SS off my older sister and brother in law (I really love that car), put some money aside for my younger sister to go back to college, put money aside for my 2 nieces and my nephew to go to college, and invest the rest.

There's a huge building next to where I work that is pretty much abandoned but I think is still kept up. It was the Chrysler Family Life Center or some shit. It even has its own playground.
Which reminds me - I shoud see if I can get some one to run Cat-5 cable to different rooms in the house when my parents decide to get their new one build. I have some 100+ feet of cable I think I could wire a couple rooms and have an opening where the router would be.
