If you don't want the answer to your OP question, why ask it? Every world athletic event rewards 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. And the one thing that could indeed make Germany not just close but ACTUALLY the 3rd or 4th best in the world is exactly what happened. They played a semifinal and lost. Therefore, they are, in this year's World Cup, the 3rd or 4th best team in the world, whether you wish it to be so or not.

Seriously, nobody here is saying anything like that. The northerner/southerner argument is his own personal pet peeve - and by far the most outlandish thing I've ever heard about our soccer team. Ever. If it wasn't so sad, it would be worht a hearty guffaw.

The third/fourth place game is often the best game of the tournament. You are guaranteed two good teams, otherwise they wouldn't have got there, and there is no pressure. the game is more a party than anything else.
