Call of Cthulhu-The Movie

This might be old news for some tuned in or hardcore fans, and I'm neither. Cthulhu and Lovecraft have always been a pereferal thing for me. I had a complete volumne at one point and read a handful of the stories. I think I made characters in the game at some point but don't remember playing it.

But with all the Cthulhu fans that bump around here I would have thought I'd hear one of them mention that there is now a movie (http://www.cthulhulives.org/cocmovie/trailer.html) based on the short story.

I have to say that the main thing that intrigues me is that not only is the movie set in the text's original time period, but it's filmed as if it was filmed during that time as well. I dig shit like that.

It's making its Canadian premiere at the Fantasia 2006 (http://www.filmthreat.com/index.php?section=festivals&Id=2020) film festival (which, as a non-Canadian, does me no good. But I live in a town that has more art screens than main run, so I have a better than average chance. I got to see The Saddest Music in the World in the screen.).

But I have to say, I'm excited. This is the kind of adaptation I love, even if I have no substantial connection to the source material.

interesting that they're going to make it in the old movie making style.

The trailer left it a bit vague as to whether it was going to be silent or not...but now that I actually read...it's going to be silent with title cards. Extra kick ass. I now must see this movie.

I hadn't realised how many charges up that hill had been made until I looked up th imdb.com (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0522454/) page.

But the news isn't all dark and appropriate, observe the larger budget* upcoming Cthulhu (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478126/). This one set on the Pacific coast.

*Larger budget is a matter of scale, the budget for this is $750,000, a pitance to make a film on but more than the HP Lovecraft Historical Society had to be sure...

I wonder if we have to make SAN checks when we see these flicks? :D

I think to undertake the endevor of the silent one they had to have failed just to make the film in the first place. Thankfully.

Seriously, I live for this kind of filmmaking.

I saw something about a Cthulhu movie a while back, but the trailer I saw made it look like one of those irritating teenage horror films a la Scream et al. Perhaps it wasn't serious or something. Luckily, this one looks somewhat better, so looking forward to it.

No, you where thinking of this one (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478126/). There is a link for the trailer if you want to confirm that's what you saw.

Doesn't look quite as awful as I remember, but still appears to be sensationalist nonsense. The one you linked to in the OP looks much more atmospheric, and in keeping with the style that Lovecraft created. Yay!

I have to say that a lot of the the things I thought where goofy in the trailer made sense when the budget was considered (modern setting, being on the Pacific coast, etc.)

The silent B&W one by the HPLHS is a good fun B-movie.

The new one coming out looks sanity-loss inducing, and not in a good way.

Ahh, people are still trying to film the unfilmable I see.

I have low expectations.

That campaign has happened every election year since I was in high school, I suspect even longer.

Far more 'unfilmable' things have been filmed. Considering the closeness to the material that the HPLHS have and the asthetic they've chosen I imagine they have a pretty good chance of hitting close to the mark. Not so much with Cthuhlhu, but I might see that if I get a chance anyway, if just to compare.

I haven't been able to find any Lovecraft movies on video/DVD, and I have never seen one out in theatres. I wonder how the movies would be, Lovecraft is one of my all-time favourite authors.

I wonder if Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath could be done on the scale I am envisioning. It would be amazing for sure.

I feel the same. I have such wonderful mental images of all of Lovecraft's stories, and I don't want those to be ruined.

H.P. Lovecraft has never gotten the treatment by film that he has deserved. The last movie I have seen that purported to be a Lovecraft film was "Behind The Wall Of Sleep". That movie was simply godawful. One of the worst I have ever seen. It has kind of become almost a guarrantee anymore that any film that uses the name Lovecraft in its' trailers promises to be B-movie swill of the lowest sort. I look forward to the new film with dread, expecting a similar hack job.

Come back Stuart Gordon, all is forgiven.

I'm not going to redo it, but one of my links somewhere in here is to an IMDb page that has all the films based on his books listed.

The B&W film was done out of love for the material and almost no hope of comercial success, I really think that it's got a decent chance of goodness. There is a lot of positive reaction to in from the links I've followed.
