Does this make sense?

I was reading the comment/opinion section of the local paper today, and this guy made a comment about the flood that happened around here..
I'd like you people who don't believe in the Bible to consider something: We just went through five or six days of rain. Imagine all the flooding that happened just around here in five or six days. What would happen if it rained for 40 days and 40 nights steadily? I wonder. If you don't believe in the Bible, I think you should.
... what?
Does anyone think that makes sense? Could you please explain it to me?

It makes sense, but it doesn't proove anything.
That really doesn't make sense. It's like saying: "A man died in a car crash yesterday. Imagine if he died on the cross. More people should believe in the Bible"

It sure ain't gonna convert anyone.
Seriously, the ardent Christian has to get out and read some Christian theological texts, get some historical knowledge, some "Christian History" under him. And take courses in reasoned debate, rather than "saying stuff and hoping it sticks" debate.
There are too many believers out there, who, through no fault of their own, let down their cause to convert by 1) not having even anecdotal backups for anything they say other than the Bible that they are reading from {and sorry, guys, that one book, as good as it is, doesn't necessarily "speak to" a non-believer},
and 2)not know ing really how to talk to someone outside of people they already know.
That's a damned shame. By not getting in the ring, they allow the Braying Stupids on either side to dictate the rules of the debate.
And the guy quoted in the OP may BE one of the Braying Stupids.
Or not. But we can't tell, becuase of poor communication.

I keep getting people who work in buildings that I regularly visit in London tell me that I should convert and quote verse after verse of bible stuff at me. One said that he had been "told" speak to me. Somone even prayed for me last week while I was there and all I asked was
"how's things"
never again - it turned into a 20 min bible lecture. I went to Catholic junior school and had to read bible stuff on a daily basis and to this day I have never believed in God. No amount of people telling me otherwise will change this.
It's nearly as irritating as Jehovah's witnesses knocking on the door and trying to convert - it's just never gonna happen.

Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, [approaches and softens] does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests

Commercial premises all over London (city and West End) It's usually the security guards. Buildings I go to every month where they kinda know me. The one who prayed for me I've seen for 4 years and he's never even mentioned god before and then I got the lecture. He felt that he had to say something, he felt that I'm a good person with love for others etc. etc.
None of them have been English so far, usually African (Nigerian) and an Egyptian.

He raises the point that 40 days and nights of rain would result in a great flood. That is fine, but why should we believe in the bible just because large amounts of rain can cause flooding? Considering that many religions have a flood myth, it is altogether possible that there was a great flood. This doesn't change the fact that Bible implies Great Flood, not Great Flood implies Bible.

He is making the assumption that if you don't believe in God it's because you don't believe in the Noah story, so if he can convince you that rain can make a flood then you will buy in for the whole Bible, redemption story and all and save yourself before you drown and go to hell.........yeah, my aunt is like that.
;)
She once told me that Jesus was really real because they found the temple in Israel, so when I asked her if Mufasa was really real because they found a rock in Africa, she tried to hit me. :( I have great faith, don't get me wrong, but trying to "prove" God with logic, and even worse with faulty logic, is at best stupid and at worst insulting to the Great Almighty. ;)

Some of these arguments really get on my nerves, for two major reasons.
Firstly, it's not so much the fact that the argument illogical, but that clearly no effort has been put into making a substantial case at all. There are some well argued points in favour of the existence of God. "It rains, therefore God exists." is not one of them. Come on, man, put a bit of effort into it.
Secondly, how arrogant do you have to be to think that a single paragraph in the opinion section of a newspaper is going to make someone change their religious beliefs?
ps Chewbacca defense rocks!
