I know, it's only tomorrow night, but it's the semifinal, so it's worth the overeagerness.
Plus, if you start now, maybe by the time the game rolls around, Frings' ban will actually have been discussed to everybody's satisfaction.
So - ladies and gentlemen, place your bets!
I say 3:2 Germany in regular (or extra) time.
Poll will be closed at kick-off* to disable the dumbasses that prefer to vote after the fact.
*if I don't screw up the timezone, that is.
ETA: Damn, poll closing time can only be set by day, not hour, so it'll have to stay open after all. Hrmph.

Look, just because they beat you on penalties is no reason for you to act as badly as some of your players. You can hope they lose, fine. But to hope that they are mauled is just bad sportsmanship. (But what else would we expect from your nation? )

F*cking Argentinians. This is one of those things like Maradonna's hand ball that just confirms that they shouldn't be allowed within 500m of a football pitch. Just ban the nation for 26 years, see whether that'll cure them.

What pisses me off is that:
- The Argentinians didn't care; the ITALIANS brought it up to undermine our team
- Cruz said he didn't feel anything, he didn't care
- When a ref makes a decision, it's final, but FIFA can change theirs any time. They said they wouldn't investigate any German players, and it should have stayed at that

English/German football terms:
Referee - Schiedsrichter/Blinde Sau
Important grammatical distinction:
When the referee decides in favour of the German team, you would use "Schiedsrichter".
When he decides against the German team, you want to go with "Blinde Sau".
It's important to differentiate between the two. A grammatical error along these lines while you're standing in a German crowd won't make you any friends. Trust me.

You had one decent chance (Schneider's(?) shot). A good counter-attacking display would work well for Germany in the second half. Italy should just try more of the same, maybe improving the passes in the final third, and they'll get a breakthrough eventually.
One problem for Italy - they seem to be putting more effort in, so if this goes to ET, Germany will probably have the upper hand.

Unecessary roughness would have been called in an American Football game, so why not even a foul in this one?

Wow, we must have seen two *completely* different scenes there. It looked really rough but did you see the replay?? The replay showed that it wasn't bad at all, he touched him wayyyyy less & less hard than I thought he had originally, it didn't look bad at all. And if you look at Perotto immediately after he hits the ground, he's raising his head and craning his neck to look around back to the pitch, so it's obvious he didn't take some kind of debilitating blow to the neck or anything.
Well, we'll surely get to see the replay again after the game.

Excuse me? Because Germany wasn't rolling all over the bloody pitch this game? Nice try. That is such an effing stereotype, and a useless claim, when Italy's opponants dive just as much, if not more, than Italy does. Did you see Totti's demonstration, diving over that German player? Also - even *if* there had been significant "overdramatizing" by the Italians (which there wasn't) this was not a game that was decided by yellow cards, red cards, free kicks, penalty kicks, or any other kind of technical whatever that could possibly be related to dives, so please don't use arguments that are not even related to the game we just saw.

What the? Are you talking about Argentina vs Serbia and Montenegro?
Italy scored that goal, deservedly. That they did it so late was harsh. And because it didn't matter anymore, no one was going to come back and help out the defense as they had done before (and done well). So Italy scored a second. I'd hardly call it an "embarassing beating", regardless of how much you hate the German team.

Anyway, what I wanted to say:
While the teams were not fundamentally mismatched in terms of performance, Italy slightly dominated almost all of the game, and, like Neu Leonstein said, it was a bit like waiting for the unavoidable to happen - Italy scoring. For our team, on the other hand, it was more like waiting for that one lucky break that might come with lots of luck and hoping.
So yeah, I'm a bit sad, but this is certainly one game there shouldn't be *any* kind of major arguing about - I wouldn't know what there is to argue.

Italy didn't win because of fouls, nor dives, nor time wasting. They won because they managed to change the way they played in previous matches such that any German preparation tactically was void. They put the pressure on, and Germany couldn't quite respond in kind.

They beat Argentina didn't they? Must still be smarting from that loss. But then again, Argentina deserved to lose, as they clearly were inferior. And so is Italy. Italy won by pure luck. They didn't dominate the match at all. In terms of play, Germany did beat Italy, since it took Italy almost 120 minutes to get enough luck to score against a superior German goal keeper.

You seem to think it's totally fine for Americans to think the same thing. So why should it be any different with Germany? Or Italy? Or France?
Why is it Germany has to be held at a lower level of pride than the rest of the world? Why is it that Germany has to continually reminded of its past, when it is Germany, and not many other nations like the US for example, has learned from the lessons of WWII?
If I want to think and say that I think Germany is superior in whatever format, including as a nation, then that's my choice as a pure-blooded German. Just like every red-blooded American can go around telling everyone else in the world that the US is the best country in the world.
So, if you want to be intolerant of my "misguided nationalism," then how about telling Americans they can't go around saying that the US is the best country in the world.

That was, in no way, a great game. A great game is when a deserving team wins. Italy only scored out of sheer luck. Nothing but luck. They have no talent whatsoever on that team. And they had to make sure Frings got banned from the match to help them win.
Nothing great at all about this match. Nothing.
I beg to differ. The defensive battle was impressive. Both teams repeatedly failed to score in regulation time. And both keepers made EXCELLENT saves.
From where I sit (as a neutral!) it was a great game.

Pardon? The first goal was a clear cut case of your defense being wrong footed, just watch the replay if you don't belive me. And as for the second, your team was trying desperately to equalize, and weren't fast enough to react when Italy got the ball, and made a quick attack.
Luck? Hardly. It was a case of the Germans being caught on the wrong foot, twice. And this is coming from someone whos neither Italian, nor German (Icelander, and proud of it, thank you), who has taken a nice, long, look at the replays. Thank you for your time.
I'm afraid you're wasting your breath. Not even the Germans in here think it was won anything but fair and square - if very disappointing, obviously.

As I said luck. Italy won the game on luck. They were lucky that the Germans weren't quick enough (I question the wrong-footed thing since they seemed to be heading *toward* the ball to stop it). That's it. Accept it or don't.

Oh no, I understand very well. It's because the rest of the world is afraid that if Germans express any pride in themselves, then it MUST mean that Nazism is rising again and that Germans are ready to try and dominate the world a second (third to everyone else) time.
It's funny how events in history from 60 years ago can continue punishing a nation when most of it's current residents had nothing to do with them, while the United States can push aside the fact that it approved of slavery until 150 years ago, or that it relocated thousands of Native Americans because the white man thought that all the land belonged to them. No one continues to punish the US for either of these events, yet Germans aren't allowed to be proud of themselves because of a psychotic Austrian killing 11 million innocent people. Ridiculous.

Not that I want to get into it per se, but nota bene: both slavery and the dislocation of the natives were done by the colonial powers. Granted, the newly free US didn't do much to curtail either for several generations, but then it was busy trying to survive.

This victory over a clearly superior team (and nation I might add), was nothing but luck for a bunch of snivelling, arrogant, scandal-prone cry babies.
But the fact remains that they DID score. Twice. That kinda ties the knot around the notion that Lehman was in ANY way a "superior" goalkeeper. Doesn't matter how long it took, mein Freund, the fact is, Italy scored. Twice. Germany was playing for the Penalty Kick phase, and that was wise of them because nobody beats Germany on PKs. Problem is, they were tired and didn't mark the Italian attackers well at all on the first goal (with only four minutes left in the OT), and on the second goal, they were just too tired to do anything and got caught moving forward on a brilliant lead pass.
GERMANY PLAYED A GREAT GAME against a team who HASN'T HAD A GOAL SCORED AGAINST THEM IN THE WHOLE CUP (their own-goal against the US doesn't count as one scored by an opposing team). So while I appreciate your loyalty, clearly the Itallian GK is "superior".
You lost, Schatze, get over it. At least the referee you had let the boys actually play the game -- all the more reason to believe the Germans were outlasted and bested by a better team. And this comes from a Seahawks fan whose team was openly sodomized by referees but still lost to a superior team (and then went on to lose Mack Strong and Steve Hutchinson...thereby ensuring no repeat of the NFC Championship...pardon me while I weep with rage), so please don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
If I can take ribbing from some of the most obnoxious fans on the planet (and you know you are, Pittburghers, admit it), you can take some gentle tickling from the World Cup legions. You're still playing for third.

Please re-read what I posted. I pointed out that it was started by the colonial powers and continued by the fledgling US.
Note, however, that your accusation is false. Slavery has been over for 140 years in the US and, may I add, contemporarily to serfdom in Russia, Bosnia, Hungary (both of the later two a part of Austria-Hungary) as well.
As for the natives being pushed off their land, tell me, when will the Germans give the land back to the Celts?
Probably never. Prior claim means nothing. The American Indian lost. QED. So did the other tribes the modern European states defeated.

No, Italy haven't been playing to their best. But they did today, against a German side that has done far better than the majority of Germans expected.
I could quote stats at you to show that Germany are the inferior team - Germany conceded twice as many goals than Italy prior to the semi-final; Italy are leading Germany in head-to-heads, both in competitive and non-competitive matches; Italy won the last meeting between the teams, 4-1...
Now on to the match: possession was 58:42 in Italy's favour; Italy had nearly twice as many shots on target; Italy had three times as many corners...
And Italy scored twice. I remember Buffon being seriously tested once in the match. Italy managed to hit the post and the bar within two minutes of the start of extra time, both times with Lehmann beaten. I'd say that Italy were the superior team.
Please, drop it.

That wasn't my point. My point was that, everyone though the Brazilians were gonna make it all the way to the finals, while Germany wouldn't even make it out of group play. My point was that, even the best teams fall to a lucky shot (or two) for their opponents. That's all that happened here. The German team lost because Italy got in two lucky shots. Period. If Italy really were the superior team, they would have, as you put it, danced rings around the German defenders, and would've won by a much higher score.

Period. Well if Germany were the better team then why didn't they score any goals at all? Duh, you're own arguement makes you look like a fool.

Leave my bloody nation alone! Go and have pride in your own nation!
I have pride in my own nation, it's called GERMANY. If you're referring to the United States, why should I have pride in a nation that:
1) sucks at soccer.
2) Persecutes an entire community of people because of their lifestyle
3) Has no universal healthcare system
4) Has a terrible education system
5) Is spending billions of dollars to condone the raping and murdering of innocents abroad
6) Bullies other nations into being on their side rather than letting other nations be
I'm sorry, but there is nothing to be proud about being an American citizen. Hence WHY I'm trying to formalize my German citizenry.

And besides...what does any of this have to do with nations? We're talking about a football match! Unless 80 million Germans played 60 million Italians just then, your sample might not quite be large enough.
oh come on! you don't seriously believe that? the world cup is all about one nation at the top of football.

I know that when you talk about a football match, whatever "superior" qualities the nations posess don't matter. On the pitch you get 11 players from each side playing a game against each other, no more, no less.

Aw, let him try. Everyone complains when people don't try to speak/learn other languages! :)
(Me? My German is so poor, I know better. I'll just use it to navigate Vienna every now and again... I just wish the Vienesse wouldn't look at me like I was from Mars when I try Slovak, Czech and bad German before going to English... at least I don't try Spanish!)

Okay everybody, the flaming has been reported to moderation.
Maybe everybody could take a deep breath now, decide to maybe actually *not* finish the replies they were about to post to certain other posters, and go back to the game and only the game and in a civilized manner?
That would be great. Thank you. :)

As far as I'm concerned, I've made my point, and my yelling. I don't intend to flame any more, just to put everyone that does on ignore.

Do you think I care if these people consider me an enemy for having pride in my nation and being upset over a loss? No.
If I cared, I'd be doing everything on this earth to make people like me. But I don't because it's a waste of energy. There will always people that hate me because of who and what I am. And that's fine. I'm not going to waste my energy trying to be/stay on their good sides. Same with these people here. If they can't handle me, they've got the option to ignore. I've certainly made a good use of the ignore list tonight.
If all you were doing was expressing pride and disappointment after a loss, nobody would consider you anything but human.
It's not a matter of handling you, as a person. What we're having trouble with is why you had to resort to insults and personal attacks after defying reality with your posts and claiming that not only was your goalkeeper, team AND NATION superior to others (the first two of which were clearly disproven by the reality of the game we all saw today). Nobody has a problem with pride, but when you use it to excuse shoddy behavior, that makes you objectionable and you deserve the banning that's coming to you. I'm sorry you can't separate nations and human beings from a football game. In fact, I have pity for everyone who KNOWS you if "what and who you are" is mired in this kind of childish tantrum.
When you grow up, you may realize what a complete fool you've been. Until then, you'll earn all the things you will probably attribute to "bad luck" or being "picked on". Remember that: you earned it all.

I'm pretty sure though that no one hackled you when they lost. So you should restrain yourself and show that bit of common decency.
Germany was clearly better than all their opponents with the exception of Argentina (and now Italy of course). In that match both teams were equally strong, both teams deserved the win (unless you count the way the Argentines acted after they lost), and that's why it went to penalties. And the side with the stronger nerves won.

Please, drop it.
You can say what you want, but my FAITH, in the German team remains unwavering, regardless of the stats. People place way too much emphasis on the statistics anyway. And no, I will not drop it. But you can join my growing ignore list :).

Faith has absolutely nothing to do with it considering the game is over.
