Is it ok to spy on your neighbors?

The past few days I've had nothing to do. I got bored and started looking out of my window more.

So I started watching the houses below me, looking for signs of life, studying patterns of who wakes up when, what cars are used more often, and at what time of day.

Yesterday, this one person, who never leaves the house, left her house

I was walking down the stairs and somehow, I noticed her car was gone. I was surprised.. and then I noticed, I need help.

I'll peak out my window, hiding behing the curtain and just look around when I hear a noise.. I feel like an old person..

Well, today I've seen my old matress get eaten by a garbage truck, a kid riding a bike, and this little girl talking to her mom who just came home, she was sitting in the minivan.. then the mom carried bags in, and now the dad is home.. hmm she is like 10 and they left her home alone.. hmm.. see? I need a damn life!

Well anyways.. Is it ok to spy on your neighbors?

haha, that isn't spying on your neighbors. Its okay to look outside and watch your neighborhood. Its not like you were peeking in through an open window with binoculars and a shotgun mic.

No, that's not spying. On nice evenings this time of year I can often be found sitting on my front porch, reading, having a drink, watching the people strolling by. (My favorite is watching people parallel parking, I'm going to make up some big cards to hold up, you know, like they used to in the Olympics, 3.5, 5.0, etc.) People should watch out for their neighbors more.

You should join or start a Neighborhood Watch program. That way you can always you are protecting your neighbors while spying on them.

Depends how much you spy on them. A few curious glances is fine, but three hours in the tree outside their window is not.

I always look around to see what my neighbours are up to. Problem is, people seem to take it the wrong way. I think one of them thinks I'm in love with him. I blush now every time I see him, not because I actually have a crush on him, but because I know that if I do blush, he'll think I'm creepy.

Binoculars are great. I keep a cheap pair in my car for one of my hobbies. I like to hide in the woods and watch birdwatchers.

I have a problem with my neighbors watching me. My neighbors love to watch me and always think I'm doing something wrong when I'm not. I was just walking down the street one day and my neighbor called the cops on me and said I was out infront of their house smoking a joint (it was a normal tobacco cigarette.) Another time I took a saw down in my back yard to cut down a tree because I needed some wood, and my other neighbor decided to call the police and make up this wild tale that I ran down in the woods with a shotgun to go burry dead bodies, and I got arrested for it. Another time my neighbors saw some kids outside vandalizing the neighborhood, and because they see me all the time, they decided to call the police and TWO "eyewitnesses" told the police that it was me and 2 friends vandalizing the neighborhood, when it was not, I was out of town all night. Its so rediculas. People need to mind their own business. I hate how I get blamed everytime one of my nosey ass neighbors decides that I'm doing something "suspicious" (like taking a walk, or going to get firewood, etc).

As long as you aren't looking in peoples windows, you are doing nothing wrong. Actually, it is a good thing. More people should get involved in their neighborhoods and know what is going on around them. There would be less crime if they did.

whatever they do in full view of the public,is.....well, in public, so no it's not spying. I probably know more about what goes on in my neighborhood than I should, because I sit outside and watch my kids play basketball, then the neighbors come up and say "hey, have you been outside today?" and I say "yeah" since right then I am sitting outside, then in an effort to get gossip, they spill on everything that happened that I didn't know about, and when they say "so, did you know that?" I say "sure" (because I know it now) and they say "wow, you are like a detective or something" :p

the funny thing is I don't ask questions.

"have you been outside today?"
"yeah"
"did you see that shit that went down?"
"uh...."
"yeah, you know L'wanda? she got the DHS called on her"
"yeah"
"yeah, she was smoking crack on her porch and Charlie called the cops"
"oh"
"did you know that Charley called the cops?"
"I heard that"
"man, you know everything"
"I guess so"
"what went on last night?"
"with the dogs?"
"yeah"
"heavy stuff"
"oh, yeah, Misty got herself arrested"
"yeah"
"how do you know all this stuff?!"

see?

Close enough. I put them on the counter on top of the fridge, and then of course dumped more stuff onto it. I found'em about half an hour ago when I went for a late midnight snack and picked up the bread.

Duh! (And there's a keychain on'em, too - I usually never detach them from my pants.)

Of course Ruffy is spying. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Except that it's Ruffy, I'd feel very uncomfortable if he was watching me all the time. I find it very funny that everyone still blames Ruffy in RL, although he doesn't seem to find it amusing. Oh well...

Nah - at least he could've told me that I've put'em on the counter :D

Problem was, after I got home from a short trip to the bank I decided to put on some shorts (35°C woohoo!) and detached the keychain so I wouldn't leave without them. Which I never did and then forgot. :p Yeah, well...

I'm just glad nobody can look into my apartment - big junction in front of my balcony... (plus, really big plants on the balcony).

I don't call it spying, it's more 'taking an active interest in the happenings of the folk in the street'. I sit here all day staring at what the kids over the road are doing, and today, I found myself being stared back at when I was putting the wheelie bin on the kerb. My first thought was 'oh-oh, I must have a big sweat patch on the back of this light-blue t-shirt' (due to hot, sticky conditions), but my mum informed me I didn't. Odd.

That's not the point, listening and watching what goes on keeps you well informed, so far, from overhearing one conversation (thank god the people in my street tend to shout across the road instead of just walk over and talk) that the people in the house next to the kids across the street are moving on the 7th july. And, as there's no black or asian folk on that side of the street, I've come to the conclusions that A) they're all racists and B) that side of the street is plotting to overthrow my side of the street.

Keep your eyes peeled.

okay... so i am totally in favor of spying on your neighbors.

i live in a filthy rich neighborhood and i hate it.... like the guy across the street just got convincted on 6 counts of curruption after like two years of trials and he's only getting a year in jail. :headbang:

plus there's another guy down the street who used to beat his daughter so bad, she screamed every night and she was so scared to go home as a 6 year old that she talked her ride home from chruch group to take to a neighbor she knew she could get help from. it took years for her to get the help she finally did, but she finally did althought her dad still isn't in jail. he just pays a lot of money and the big swimming pool he's been trying to put in just gets put off for a year.
:headbang:

okay, so in the end.. i'm glad that at least the scum in my neighborhood has at least some extra problems for the stuff they do but I am hoping that people start spying more just so that all the other stuff they do gets them in more trouble! :D

Well, I got a pair of headphones for my computer last year for my birthday. When I was using them, however, it started picking up all my neighbors' phone calls. It was pretty much like I was on the other end of the phone, I could hear everything they were talking about which was pretty cool I guess...

Until my mum had a go and heard our neighbor bitching about her. They never did speak to one another again...of course the neighbor didn't know she'd been found out.

I watch everything in my neighborhood. I do backround searches so I dont have any nasty surprises with people that live nearby. I dont divulge secrets to anyone else, its just for my own personal use. I know most of whats going on, but I'm not a gossip.

Now I'm in a brand new neighborhood as of this week and I'm already learning everyone's life story. People gush all their details to me and somehow learn very little about me and my family.

hmm she is like 10 and they left her home alone.. hmm..

Nothing unusual or irresponsible about that, unless you have reason to believe she in particular can't be trusted alone. Most U.S. states say you can leave your kid at home when they're ten. And the Red Cross babysitter's certification program is open to 11 year olds. I was 11 when I got my certificate.

Well, I hate LaDame for going away, but it's also okay to spy on your neighbors. I would do it if my neighbors were more interesting, or if I lived in a highrise. Man, I'd love to spy on LOTS of people at once.

I used to do that at Ocean City when we stayed in a big timeshare building, and I'd watch people with the dolphin-watching binoculars. I always wished I'd see people having sex, but mostly I saw people watching TV, or watching MY building with binoculars.

I can't help it. I look through the kitchen window and there they are. I know what they smoke (not tobacco), I know that they park their cars in the back yard, I know that none of them should wear anything less revealing than a caftan, I even observed them performing a questionable activity in the pool that, perhaps, should not be performed in public. I used to want my kitchen sink to have a window over it, now I'm questioning the wisdom of that. Some things you don't want to know.

People gush all their details to me and somehow learn very little about me and my family.

I've never understood why people did that. For some reason most people just can't stand silence and insist on filling it by telling the most personal of stories. Even to total strangers. I've always heard that cops get a lot of info out of people sitting in the back of their cars by just being silent.

Thanks goodness I'm intensely private in RL. And that I have no problems with sitting silently. Honestly, I'd rather get lost in thought than have to make small talk with a stranger. But then it comes at a price. When you keep to yourself, people find you to be a bit off. Oh well, I'd rather have privacy than popularity. :D

After I found out my neighbor's boyfriend beat the hell out of her, you bet I spied every single time he was over there. It paid off because I had to call the cops one time and I could give details of what he did to her. He almost killed her and her/his baby. I don't want to think what would have happened if I hadn't spied. I wouldn't have known the noise in her house was a sign of danger had I not known he beat her.

Spying is okay as long as there's a good reason to spy.

Hmmmmmm... depends on the definition of spying really - to take an 'active interest' in your neighbours and area is ok - curtain flicking, checking their car out, listening at the wall when they argue cuz it's amusing (or is that just me?)... but rummaging through trash, checking their mail, and keeping a log of when their home miiiiigght be stretching it a little :)
