Okay, that's your opinion. Welcome to it.

But you're a United States citizen, yes?

Do you buy and sell stuff here? Pay your taxes? Basically have an investment in economies both local and national?

Do you vote? Go to jury duty?

Then you support the US.

That's a good thing. That's something to be happy about. You don't have to like all of the laws or trends in common culture that the US has. And yet, you can participate in the process, even if you think the country's "culture" is evil or useless or whatever.

Because wartime rhetoric has us all turned about, we seem to have embraced an idea that "fighting" or "dying" for one's country is the only legitimate means of "supporting'" the country.

Parallel to that, I see a lot of silly bumper-sticker rhetoric that implies that those who "fight for the country" (soldiers) are more patriotic than others, by virtue of being soldiers. That, somehow, they are more invested in this country.

It's a short leap of illogic to next assume that the soldier is "more of a legitimate citizen" than everyone else. I hope we're not on our way to assuming that soldiers are a separate class from the rest of us.

It's not so. They are citizen soldiers, and in America, that means citizen first. And god bless 'em.

But anyhow, joining the Armed Forces doesn't suddenly mean you're "supporting the US", where before you "weren't supporting the US".

Yeah, and instead of some bogus paradise of perfect non-heirarchic government (paradoxically achieved by stultifying totalitarian cruelty), they want to "recreate" a comic-book, never-actually-existed version of the Ottoman Empire.

You know, those buttholes who decided the Armenian genocide was A-OK, went ahead with it, but then persisted in lying about whether it actually happened.

The War on terror may be a poorly-ordered, dubiously-concieved nightmare of political hypocrisy, run by rich assjacks who have shown no particular policy interest in the "nation-building" they talk about...

But then look at the scumbags on the other side.

Also rich assjacks.

Making poor, unlettered, scared kids do their fighting for them.

Often with no hope of even surviving, or seeing their families again.

It's enough to make you shit blood, puke snake venom and eat glass. What a world.

EDIT: Oh, yeah. No, I won't go in. I support my country by trying to get its young citizens to stop sniffing glue long enough to learn how to read.

And, I'd make a lousy soldier. I'd probably try to chew my DI's face off, out of rage at being yelled at, then he or she would rightly kick my teeth out the back of my asshole. Going into the Armed Forces likely equals going to the hospital and not much else.

I served about a third of my term...then started to get from bored to seriously bored. I mean, everybody with an IQ over 80 understands and can perform drills within a week. All of 'em. The rest is: ok, wait here. ........ now run.........now, wait here........now run - and: the rifle belongs 1.5 centimeter more to the left, private Wagner. Sir, yes, Sir...........Yaaaaaaaaawn. The best part of it was, as a stinger soldier, to play virtual reality games (you know, it's kind of expensive to shoot down our 26 FA-18A's. Hahaha.). That was fun!

I was an anti-army person before I served and now even more. In our case (Switzerland), army is just a stupid way of squandering a sensles amount of money. Have the Europeans and Americans protect us! We have all their dirty money! ;) No, seriously: whoever would attack Switzerland would either have beaten the European Union armies (which means we wouldn't stand a chance) or be a united European Union army (which means we wouldn't stand a chance). Why waste money? Spend more money on civ protection, disaster relieve and police...abolish the army. One of the few things that I say with pride if I talk about Switzerland is, that we voted (twice!) to abloish our army. The bad thing about democracy is, that I always lose!

Or does (or did) Switzerland have a proffesional army too?

Yootopia: If you're serving you have the rifle at home, yes. And no, we don't have a professional army. There guys called Instructors, which are specialists teaching specific things - they are professionals. But as far as I know, none of combat troops are professionals. Maybe pilots? Dunno.

Philosopy: That's poo-poo. Switzerland has around 220'000 men in service, incl the reserve. That still makes a fairly big army per capita (it used to be over 500/k, which I believe was the largest per capita) but is nothing compared to North Korea (apparently 1 mio) or China (in 2003: 2.3 million).

And the Pope...isn't God protecting him? What does he need the Swiss for. ;)

No. I didn't keep up with the medical training. Our paramedic licenses expire after two years of inactivity, and while I considered becoming an MD while doing the job, I didn't want that kind of responsibility.
I'm at university right now, majoring in English & Biology to become a German highschool teacher. That suits me better. :D

(I did, however, work as a paramedic the year after I finished the service but they screwed me over with the payment, which then pretty much closed that case once and for all.)
