For those of you who have forgotten, or don't care, or whatever. This Wiki article pretty much tells the whole story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meigs_Field

This is what happen when government get's too big. This is what happen when governemnt is allowed to use "safety" to justified closing down an airport without the proper warnings and NOTAMs (Notice to Airmen). However, pilots are not the only one hurt by this blantent show of power by Mayor Daley. People who worked at Meigs lost their jobs, as you can see the story from an ATC that was working at Meigs Field.

However, the field is dead, and it will never come back. However, the people of Chicago have not had the brains to vote this guy out of office. Why not, I have no clue. However, I urge every Chicago resident that in the next mayoral election to kick Mayor Daley to the curb! Also, now that there's a public access park where the field used to be, it'll be easier for terrorist to launch a Ground to Air missle to Chicago skyline, nice going Daley.

and that's my rant.

Also, it's funny to see while Mayor Daley has a problem with a public airport, he has no quams with putting in a private heliport. Ahh the irony.

Yeah. It was very sad and underhanded what happened in Meigs. I remember the first time I loaded Flight Simulator 2.0 in my Commodore 64 and there I was, at the start of Runway 36 in Meigs, ready for take off. And for the next 20 years that's how it was. Then they closed Meigs and now you start the default flight in Seattle. Yuck!

Daley's a Chicago crook.

I happen to agree with some of his social policy lip-service.

Sadly, more and more, it seems that this won't matter. Any good things he can do (or should have done) will be overshadowed by his criminal dealings.

It's not so much a case of "government getting too big"; it's more accurately a case of one administration/ seat of local government using a legacy of past criminality to finance current criminal dealings.

The old politico-mobster heirarchies remain.

I wish I could like this guy. At least he's not as bad as his dad (I think).
