It's likely that the parts of the car were not all made in the US. Most cars assembled in US factories have a blend of European, American, and Japanese parts - from the brake linings through hoses and belts, all the way through fans, gears, and computer chips, no car is truly 100% American.
That said, I drive a 2006 VW Passat (black) and my wife drives a Ford Windstar minivan.
Both seem very reliable so far.

We do get quite a bit of snow here in Michigan, but in this particular town the plow service is actually quite good. When I lived up north in the Upper Peninsula I really needed the Jeep, but services work a bit better down here.
I've never seen those commercials. I stopped watching TV about 6 or 7 years ago.

If you want to buy American these days, you've got to buy Japanese or Korean.
A lot of cars from GM and Ford don't even qualify as domestic anymore since so much of them comes from China...it's a sad state of affairs, but one they brought on themselves.

I've got a 2003 Chevy Silverado 4x4, with the 4.8L V-8 engine and 24 gallon tank. I bought it new, and I love it. I just wish it had displacement on demand (runs on 4 cylinders until I need all 8, for increased fuel economy), power windows (because I'm lazy), power door locks (so I can have a remote to unlock them before I get there), and cruise control (although it doesn't cost too much to retrofit an OEM cruise control into my truck).
ETA: Once my truck is paid off, I'd love to get a Jeep CJ-8 (Scrambler) as a project vehicle.

96 Ford Thunderbird. Not a terrible car, but I got ripped off. My stupidity tho. The place was a body shop/car lot DUH!.. I knew the headlight had been replaced by looking at it, when I asked the guy if it had ever been wrecked and he lied .. I should've left right then.. but I didn't. Title didn't say so, but contacted DMV later and found out that it wasn't clean. I should've got the 95 Grand Prix I went to look at before the T-bird anyway.. just a better car period.
Drove a 87 Pontiac Grand Am SE for 11 years before getting this. Was a good car. Only problem I had was that damn computer module.. went out 2 times. Mechanically it was a great car. My first car was a 87 Honda CRX Si(wish I still had it). Drove it for maybe 2 years before getting the Grand Am.

I can fix basic stuff like changing my spark plugs, and my air filter and all, but I am wanting to rebuild the engine so that it will last longer and for that I need a book. haha.

I think it has more to do with the kind of cars we can afford. I picked this one up late last summer for $1,800, and it had 50K miles on it. That was my price range, and it's been a solid car for me. I had to put brakes on it last year, and it uses a very small amount of oil--less than a quart per 3K miles, so I figure it ought to be good for a couple more years at least.

Then it's down to Tucson to see Biosphere 2 before it's turned into condos--my gf is thinking about a book on ambitious projects that ultimately failed.
And to top it off, we're going to visit 3 microbreweries along the way.
Ok-so you'll be prepared. The heat out there can make a life or death situation really quick.
The north rim of the Canyon is pretty fantastic too, if you have a chance. Lake Powell/Page is beautiful.
If you've never been to Zion, its quite an experience. Lots of places to hike and its nice and cool in the bottom at the river.
Two years ago, was the last time my wife and I went all over Az and Utah-we had the three kids with us, so we didnt rough it like I'm used to. I am looking foward to doing it again. The kids loved Meteor Crater and the Petrified Forest.
I think we put over 1500 miles on a van in a week. My kids learned more out there than they would have in school-and loved the experience.
Have a great time. I would recommend you have your car fully serviced before you go. A full radiator service-flush and new cap wouldnt hurt.
Also, with all the long hills out there, make sure your brakes are in good shape. You dont want to try out one of those runaway truck lanes.
I'm envious.

We're driving out from south Florida, so it'll be more like 5,500 miles in 2 weeks for us. I'll probably get an oil change when we stop for a couple of days to visit a friend in Salt Lake City, and I had the car serviced a couple of weeks ago, so it's ready to go.
I'm not so worried about the mountain driving--the brakes are new, and it's a stick, so if worse comes to worst, I can always decelerate by downshifting. It's a small car anyway--not much in the way of momentum to worry about.

MG ZR - it's great fun! Suspension is rock-solid allowing it to corner extremely well and stick to the road like glue. (feel every tiny bump though). Interior is a bit crap. It's a basic driver's car. Great for my local country lanes. Shitty mileage not helped by me adding sports air filter with cold-air induction and a performance exhaust.

Though now Rover MG has shut getting parts is a problem. MG are set to re-open next year though under Shanghai Automotive so hopefully all will be ok again. :)
Was the last of the British owned and built mass manufactured cars. British cars are now dead :(
In Japan I have a '96 Toyota Starlet, not stylish, but it gets good mileage and I don't drive all that much in Japan anyway. It's just too damned expensive to take long trips by car.
In America I have a '03 Mitsubishi Gallant which I love to death, even if it's nose is too damn long.
I have to admit, I miss my Ford Bronco II. Yeah, it was a gas hog, didn't have working A/C (Fun in Nevada's summers), it would over heat climbing if I had a lot of weight in it, and it steared like a pregnant whale, but... when it was just my fiancee and I in the mountains, damn that sucker could CLIMB. I think it would happily try to climb trees if I let it.
Hyundai Elantra. FULL 10 YEAR BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY, BUDDY! IN YOUR FACE! Seriously though, it's a fine car and I got a great deal on it.

When people drive enormous vehicles it means gas prices are too low. I'm a fan of the Toyota cars, even if some of the newer ones are a bit of a tight fit.

At least when they live in Florida. In many places in places like Michigan, Canada, New England, Minnesota, etc. you really need something that can get through the snow.
Nissan 300ZX... soon to be replaced with a classic musclecar (any sort.)
230hp, 23mpg!
94 chevy cavalier...it sucks because its not manual, and its purple...but hey, it still runs good :D, and decent on gas.
The only car I have seen that purple looks good on is the 1967 Pontiac GTO. That car is the God of cars in purple.

I've always associated purple with the 1970 Barracuda (http://www.theoaklandpress.com/images/photos6.24/8221_512.jpg).
Though I had a purple 67 XR-7 in Gran Turismo 3 that I liked a lot, but that's because I killed a day setting up the suspension so it wouldn't handle like a brick and the limited slip so it wouldn't have such a sloppy tail.

That's funny, i've always associated the Cuda with an orangeish red color. That reminds me, I saw a badass lime green '70 Cuda a few weeks ago for sale in my town, that thing was jacked up, had huge ass drag tires on the back and a monster supercharger up outta the hood. Looked sweet. Bet it hauled ass too, I'm dissapointed I never got to see it running. :( Although, I still think even that would have looked better in this (http://home.fuse.net/billstoys/John-Corman.jpg)color.
There is a 1967 Pontiac GTO (http://pontiac.jbcarpages.com/GTO/Wallpapers/Paper6/1967%20Pontiac%20GTO%201280.jpg) in purple. I love the grill on them for some reason, that shape it's in gets me every time.
Speaking of games, I remember my favorite game car was a 1995 Porsche 911 Turbo I had on Need For Speed Porsche Unleashed. I had the thing hacked to have about 1400 horsepower and nearly perfect handling, it was bright lime green with blue racing stripes down the back, and a GT2 spoiler. Oh God, that car would move. I had to shift into THIRD as my starting off gear when I layed on the gas real hard, if I was in 1st or 2nd it would just sit there and spin doughnuts (yes, I played with the gear ratios, but there was a lock in the game I suppose as to how low you could get the ratios, I had to stick to shifting up to 3rd right as I was starting off, and it would still burn out through about 80 mph if I redlined it and dropped it in gear.) I think I got it up to nearly 265 MPH one time, but I couldn't tell, the spedometer was wrapping around. :p
My second favorite was a cannary yellow 1978 Porsche 911 Turbo with a whaletale. I had that thing hacked to have about 850 horsepower, but it's tail was so loose I could hardly drive the thing except for on the really straight corses.
I drive a Aqua green Smart car, and i love it so much,
drove all the way from Uk, to Norway (through holland germany denmark sweden) it's so much fun to drive. :D

The goofiest thing I've gotten a video game car into was on the first Gran Turismo. I had a TVR Griffith (or Griffin...can't remember what it's called) dialed so tight that it would lift up its inside tires in turns. Since there wasn't a 3rd dimension in the game the game would tilt up on its outside wheels at 45 degree angle through all of the turns. It looked absolutely ridiculous but amused me. Actually my favorite was a lightly modified RUF that I used in enduro races in GT3. It was actually underpowered in the class but that's why I liked it because I won in it anyway because I out drove the other cars. Same thrill with the first Gran Turismo when I blew another day tweaking the Aston Martin DB-7 so it would win the Anglo-European championship. No one believed I could make that car a winner. And it looked cool, too.

I ran across a couple of those for sale in the US a while back. I hadn't heard of them until then. started contemplating what I would need to do to raise the money for one, it looked like a kick in the pants to drive.

They are a hoot. 600cc engine but with no weight it drives like a skateboard. That weird silver loop on the car is actually a safety cell akin to racing or rally cars. One weird thing is that the front and rear tyres are different sizes and there is no spare. A workmate had one and he had the tyres filled with run flat compund so that if a tyre got nailed it wouldn't go flat. BTW I am over 6' tall and I can drive the Smart with ease.

I always wanted a Smart. When I lived in Germany I went to the Smart dealership in Frankfurt and tried to buy one, but they didn't sell them in US specs, so I settled for a Mini Cooper. Of course, they just announced that they're going to sell them in the US, and I just bought a Miata, so I can't justify buying another car.

That's a good car chase car. Powerful, solid, good ground clearance. It looks like it can take a hit or two or smash its share of fruit carts or alley crates, take a few of San Francisco's steep streets. Not really much attention spent on asthetics so you don't wince when you have to knock on the bad guys bumper or if they slam into your side to run you off the road.
