I'm not very happy about this but Jeremy Paxman did not perform as well as I hoped:

She stomped him. How embarassing to get out-debated by Ann Coulter. He should probably punish himself. Maybe slam his own nuts in a car door.

Jut what we need: Ann COulter encouraged. :(

Whats worse though is, i don't think ive ever seen him loose a debate before, but to loose to a particularly contraversial figure who holds complete opposite beleifs to him is only more embaressing.

Indeed, throughout watching that I was shouting at him to get firmer and to ask the deep questions that show up these sorts of people. Paxman does it with such ease with other people, can't see why Coulter can't be any different!

Ann rocks when it comes to debate. It is hard for any liberal to win in a debate with her. even Alan Colmbs can't win against Ann. I'd love to see a debate between her and Kerry or Hillary.

I just think that mouth is wasted in the dispension of political viewpoints.

There is a difference between doing her and her doing me. i'd prefer the former. ;)

Yeah, it's pretty hard to debate an empty headed, neocon.. cyborg!
Alan Colmes told her the fuck off for being full of shit and she gaped like a guppy for a second and acted all offended then said the same exact shit like Colmes hadn't said a word.

In the meantime she gets rich writing best sellers. Someone must be reading her books, a lot of someones to make them best sellers.

I don't understand this idea that she somehow 'beat him'. It's not a debating programme, it's a news programme, and he wasn't trying to 'beat' her.

What he did do was show her up as the extremist she is. What's the best way to do that? Ask them if they really believe them and watch them say yes. All the people who watched that interview would be sharing in Paxman's mild astonishment at the absurdity of the woman and laughing as she tried to defend viewpoints with yes and no answers.

Actually, i would say Newsnight is a debating program more then anything else.

It's a debate for guests. The presenters role is to ask them questions and let them answer.

Well maybe thats what it is supposed to be, but it never normally ends up being that way, especially when Paxman is involved.

Maybe he was sprouting wood. Disputantes tend to be attracted to other fierce debaters, no matter how abhorrent their views or flawed their arguments. I know a hard-on's a distraction when I'm debating...and I'm not even a master debater.

I have to say that I can't be bothered to watch another 7 minutes odd of Ann Coulter, but I would say this: Paxman's role on Newsnight is as an interviewer, not as a debater. He's not there to put forward his point of view. If he allowed her to put across hers, well that's his job. He'll go for UK politicians, but he'll rarely try and beat a foreigner down.

Also, as a BBC presenter, Paxman is severely constrained in what he can say about his own views, but, from what I've seen of Paxman's writings in newspaper columns &c, he's scarcely a liberal.

How is that a debate?

thats one person just asnwering question

unless multiple people are asked the question, dont know if they do that

They do. They often have several guests on at once.

All I mean is that the point of the presenter is to ask questions and pick holes in an argument, not try and make an argument themselves.

To quote, is she "bucking for a section eight"? This woman is quite, quite mad. I have been reading some of her work, and by her own standards she is ignoring the facts in front of her. I am a Christian, but I am also a medical doctor and spend a lot of time on archaeological research (my first love), and I have no problems with Darwin's theory of evolution. It is no more far-fetched than any creation story I have come across, and both likewise have quite a bit of supporting evidence. Biologists have significant research data to show that evolution is a very viable possibility, and many people have put forward the possibility of some almighty power starting it all off.

Anyway back to lady-mad. She seems to be saying that a great amount of what she terms "liberalism" is utter tripe. However much of what she cites seems like common sense to me. Getting children to use Tupperware instead of rubbish plastics is a good idea and does deserve rewarding, imbuing children from an early age to respect the planet is good. Safe sex education is also a very good idea, especially with the increase and spread of STD's (sexually- transmitted diseases), again the teaching of such things I support, have even taught myself. She says that you are not allowed to mention God anymore. I lived in the US for some years, and if I had even suggested to many, many people that mentioning God is not politically correct or that it is not allowed in Public Schools, I'd have been lynched!
She seems to revel in up setting people, and even forcing others to conform to her own views! I'm all for freedom of speech, but this woman appears to be doing her very best to destroy many good and well intentioned values and systems to be replaced with what she perceives as right, and to my mind that is not right.

Anyway, Paxman.... He treated her like a lot of guests he has. Everyone expects him to be as ruthless as the whole "Did you threaten to overrule him" episode some years ago. He was fairly direct, but I also think that he has watched her before and made a conscious decision not to draw her out into a very long-winded debate which most likely would have ended with her pouting and stating repeatedly that she is right and him smirking.
