Who Should Captain England?

This was going to be about the cricket, but seeing has Beckham as resigned we can kill two birds with one thread.

In the cricket, I think they should give Trescothick back the Captaincy. Strauss doesn't have the experience and it's too much to expect Flintoff to do everything. It's essential now that we win the series against Pakistan, both for confidence levels and so we don't get laughed of the pitch in future.

In the football...I've no idea, I don't know enough about it to make a good decision. I've heard good things about Harry the Hippo...

Tell me about it. The batsman did their job... the bowlers were appalling. There simply is no excuse for failing to bowl a proper line and length in international cricket. For crying out loud, I can bowl straighter than the England bowlers were!

The Sri Lankan 50 came up in FOUR (4) OVERS!! At the same time, England were on 2. That is horrible for England.

It was fantastic to watch those Sri Lankans though. Man, what an amazing display. As for the captaincy.. Fuck knows.

I don't think the Sri Lankans are that good a batting side - they didn't do that well in the Test. I just think that the England bowlers were consistently giving them deliveries wide of the off stump - perfect for smacking about the place, especially when you're high on confidence and the other team is totally demoralised.

You can't deny that he batted well. A hundred in 72 balls isn't easy.

Thinking seriously about the captain... Bring back Atherton.

Oh, I wouldn't want to take away too much from their achievement; being given an opportunity isn't enough, you have to be able to build on that opportunity. What I am saying, though, is that the England bowlers shouldn't have given them so much of a chance in the first place.

Nah, he's much better at commentating.

John Terry for both teams.

I ended up watching the cricket at 3am rather than the football.

I found it far more interesting watching Sanath Jayasurya absolutely demolish englands 'attack' than watching england and portugal play grab ass around a football field, and then was back in time for extra time and the shootout.

To answer the question of this thread, I have no idea. Being a football captain isn't that hard, someone can do it. Cricket on the other hand isn't so easy..

England 321/7 (50 ov)
Sri Lanka 324/2 (37.3 ov)

And they slowed down a whole lot towards the end. England's bowling was pretty shit, but Sri Lanka would have been on their way to the big quad century if they batted first.

Back to the captaincy question (yes England's cricketers were crap).
Cricket:
I don't think that any of the three mentioned should be captain. Let them concentrate on playing. Give the captaincy to someone like Cook. Solid, dependable, but not spectacular.
Football
The captain needs to be someone who can motivate (as our managers can't). Gerrard would be a possibility, but he has too many games where he seems to not care. I would recommend John Terry or Ashley Cole. The two are always up for the game. Although if he is always going to play like he did on Saturday - Owen Hargreaves could be a candidate.

For football, John Terry.
