Maybe this has been done but couldn't find it on the first two pages.

Should be an exciting game. I hope it is anyway.

Edit: Blah, missed a 't' in Portugal. My bad.

England 2-1. Portugal to score first but then get a few red cards allowing England to score 2 goals.

The ref for this game, Horacio Elizondo (Argentina) has officiated 3 games in the tournament, giving out 1 red and 17 yellows so far. I don't see him as likely to give out too many cards following Blatters criticism of Ivanov.

It will be interesting though to see which players Portugal would have had available for the semi had they won.

I hope I'm wrong, but I'm guessing this goes into penalties and England wins there. That's what I voted in the poll.

Alternatively, Portugal wins by 1 in regular time.

I'm nothing if not flexible. :p

Vai ser complicado mesmo para você. Mas certamente seu coração vai falar mais alto e você torcerá pela Inglaterra contra o Brasil. Nada mais normal.

PS: Grato pela informação. Meu inglês está péssimo mesmo. Já corrigi.

No it isn't. Prepositions are impossible in any foreign language that is significantly different to your natve one, and English is just weird with its use of articles.

I keep getting de and a confused in Portugese (de pé being very different to a pé)

How the hell do you call an England match? They've got the talent, Portugal are missing key players and need to protect the remainder. Going by precedent, England will do just enough and take it by one goal. But they don't seem to be leaving themselves with much of a margin, so they could find themselves in extra time with the heat sapping their stamina and end up losing. Alternatively they could get their act together, and steam through to a two or three-goal win.

Eh, I'll go for the middle option and say England by one goal, 1-0 or 2-1.
Jeruselem
01-07-2006, 15:54
Interestly, when England won in 1966 it beat Portugal and later Germany in the final. England can meet Germany in the final if they get past Brazil or France.

You must be watching a different game to the rest of us. Portugal are reduced to trying quick breaks and the occasional foray forward. Their only chances have come from long range shots or on one mistake by the English defence.

The worrying thing is that the ref is falling for the Portuguese acting most of the time, and what on earth was Terry booked for? Anyone know?

Apart from heading the ball and trying to get to it - clattering into the Portugal player (who wasn't really trying to get the ball).

C Ronaldo and Figo weren't effective and lots of long rangers. Tiago had one good chance but didn't use it. England's last passing could have been a lot better but a few shots on goal did get the Portugal keeper busy.

Australia will be happy if they continue that kind of form for the Ashes.

Sri Lanka now 258-0, with 23.3 overs remaining. They're chasing 330-odd, and absolutely demolishing Enlands attack. Jayas has 137 off about half as many balls. Kinda sucks that they're batting second, that 438 of south africa is looking a bit slow compared to this..

And a quick flick down 2 channels shows that nothing has happened in the football. Ho hum.

Well it did look like the boot contacted with something there. Inner thigh or something. Didn't look like the ref was going to do anything about that though. It was a complete accident and the ref seems to be pretty on-to-it over things like that so far.
As for the push - doesn't matter how little or large. Anything like that's a red card offence nowadays.

Things like pushing after ref's stopped play are instant red cards (AFAIK).
Remember Beckham in '98? He tripped the guy who had done his best to tried to break Beckham's leg in a tackle.

You would think after England has won just one penalty shoot-out from 6 attempts (now 7) that doing lots of practise in said particular area of the game would have been mandatory.

Portugese goalie was damn good. I like how he didn't move at all for one shot, cause the ref had blown his whistle. Shows a lot of bottle to stand there calmly in a WC game and let a goal through cause you're certain it'll be disallowed.

If the cameras missed it, the ref prob did as well. I thought the ref did pretty well this game. He didn't miss much and got nearly all calls right, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.
Rooney's push though was right in front of the ref, so there was no way it could have been missed.

Amazing to see the absolute polar opposites in emotions between the two teams at the end. These games are everything to those guys.

So now, we've seen two penalty shootouts in the quarters, and it begs the question; who is the better keeper, Lehmann or Ricardo?

Lehmann - English shots were too close to the keeper.

Agh! I blame it on Rooney. Robinson did a fine job holding off goals up until the PK's and then...well, you saw.

Ricardo did really quite well.
TBH, England looked as good when they were down to ten men as they were when they had 11. God knows why, but it seems like we a kick up the arse to play properly.

What is it about England???
When they played their first match (against Paraguay) i fell asleep halfway through because it sucked balls.

I missed the second game of thwirs because i didn't set my alarm right.

Now the dreaded Quarterfinal against a Portugese side who has previously came from 2-0 down to beat England 3-2 LOL........................

Basically i set my alarm for 2am to watch the game at 3, only thing is i fell asleep with the stereo still on so the timer never started.
I woke up at 4:30 and there was no way iwas going to watch just the last 30 minutes...

I got up at 5:35 and saw it was in penalties, i don't know what the final score was so don't you tell me.:(
I predicted Portugal by 1 in penalties maybe i'll find out when i watch the replay.^_^

Not really. All they did was get very defensive - something England are very good at - most club games in England seem to end 0 - 0 or 1 - 0 and England (the team) has the record for most 0 - 0 games in the WC (nine IIRC).*

Notice whenever they kicked it long (after -> 10 men), there was invariably only one English player down the Portugese end. Everyone else was up defending. So it made it looked like England was playing well 'cause they were keeping the Portugese out well. But they weren't giving themselves any chances to counterattack.

*Which is why I don't think England will ever win another WC. They play too negatively, in that they don't look to score rather look to remain scoreless. Don't lose many games that way, but you also don't win many. And with England's appalling record at penalty shoot-outs it definitely isn't the way to go.

Obviously it's been something they've been working on. Their coaching team was canny enough to realise when you get to this point in the comp, you're likely to have at least one game going all the way to shoot-outs and prepared accordingly.

I'm just amazed that England doesn't appear to have been prepared for that (esp considering their 'success' in this area). Their kicks were pretty lame.

We've had this same mentality throughout the tournament. The team doesn't have the confidence in themselves or the manager's tactics. Not in any game have they played like they believed they were going to win it.

Neither team deserved to win but any team that consistently misplays and mishandles the ball without an opposing player within 5 yards does not deserve to even be playing the game.

I don't know how you could consider England playing well. Just because Portugal self-destructed and England didn't allow a goal doesn't mean they played well. Portugal's defense was atrocious and England could never capitalize and most times shot themselves in the foot.

England and Portugal didn't play very well but England's thuggish type play will never get them anywhere. Roony is a lunatic and might look more comfortable in Rugby than on a soccer pitch.

Not just Ronaldo. Start of the 2nd half and it seemed to me like the Portugese 1/2 time talk was to tell them to fall crying out at any and every opportunity.
That first 10-15 minutes after the break was appalling. Practically ever tackle on a Portugese player resulted in him theatrically falling over screaming in pain.
Fortunately the ref didn't play along and the theatrics diminished.

I remember that one. He tried to argue that he'd been slapped. Even if he had been - how hard does a slap have to be to have you on the ground crying in pain for nearly a minute?

I also liked that he ignored Crouch's elbow into a defender later in the game. That guy is all sharp angles and gangly limbs. It's obvious he's going to get an elbow in someone's face sometime but it won't be delibrate. Ref thought it wasn't and replays backed him up.

Ref'ing in this game was one of the best so far. Fact that there was only a couple of minutes stoppage time each 1/2 showed he kept play moving, which is the most important thing.

It wasn't the pushes that seen of Rooney, it was the fact that he stomped on the genitals of a Portuguese player.

Dammit.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm happy with the result. I'm unhappy with Rooney having gotten the red card. Because now every Englishmen for four years will claim that it was that bit of crappy refereeing which made England lose, and not their genuine lack of teamplay.

So yeah, I don't think it was a red card. A yellow would've been enough.

Other than that, England played much better this match, but not good enough to make up for the agony they put me through when I watched their other games.

Anyone esle think that England are cursed. First off (speaking as a ref here) Rooney shouldn't have been sent off, the offense was the push on Ronaldo (not the stamp, which wasn't a stamp. it was a base of rooney trying to get the ball and trying to pushoff with his leg to get towards the ball. it was the blokes fault for putting his balls in the way.)

Second, we never, ever win on peniltys.

Thirdly, how come we can't score, Cole and Lamaprd both should have hit the net.

Well I heard an interesting stat..
In 6 years, Germany have missed two (2) penalties in a penalty shootout. England missed 3 last night.

I think it may be a curse.

Edit: Btw, I've got no idea if that stat is true. I heard it on the news though.

It was a good match. England in my opinion was the better team. They created the better chances and defended much better. But we don't have any confidence when it comes to penalties. We're cursed I tell you..

Interesting fact for you here.

Remember '98, with Beck's red card? I think i read somewhere it was the VERY same ref who gave it to him, the same one who ref'd the match.

Also, Portugese? What language do the Argentinians speak? Its either the same language or very similiar. Unfair that they could potentially argue their case and all England can do is gesticulate...

Finally, Argentinian Ref? Anyone here remember the Falklands... the guy could potentially be bitter, (and we keep getting them!! *scowls*), maybe not the most fair move. Not saying it actually made any difference.

My take : Roony pushed off ball. Instant red. That'll what he got it for. He was getting leg hacked by the blokes tackling him and he wasn't being overly aggressive at that point, just trying to keep possession. Ouch, smack in the balls, unfortunate accident. The red card'll be for his fit

Anyone else see Ronaldo wink to the bench after the fiasco? I smell a rat. And his "friendly" head butt before the match to Rooney? Hmmm

Don't get me wrong. We lost because we had our "feed up to Rooney" tactic, which Crouch did much better anyway.

Bad luck, bad calls, but in the end of the day, if we had to go out of the tournament, that would be the way. Made me that wee bit prouder to be English.

As for Becks, damnit man! A few bad games and Sven's shit positioning for you mate, and you're ready to quit?!? Bull!

So what if you're not Rooney for goal scoring. You my son, you're skill is in your crosses. You keep passing it up to Roony by himself, no play can occur, you did your job as best you could mate. You still scored your free kick goal that we know you can do, and hell! Who else would we have for captain. I think Becks resigning is a bad idea! Get him back in there!

A rat? What do you mean?

What was he supposed to do? Betray his country and try to cover up Rooney's vicious and senseless attack on Ricardo Carvalho?

And bad calls? What bad calls?

Oh you must be referring to Lampard's hand ball in the English area in the 28th minute of play right? Should have been a penalty for Portugal. Yes that must be it.
