Both on the terms that they were killed in the fire or that the boy is willing to kill them on something as trivial as an english mark?

Well, when you're a teenager, small things seem pretty huge. It's your whole life, you know? We had a guy over here that killed his girlfriends' parents and they ran away, but then they were caught, and now he's going to serve a ton of consecutive life sentences. Only 17 or 18 years old, I think. It's just the way your brain works at that age, that everything is just blown out of proportion and you can't imagine feeling any other way.

A Japanese boy burned down his home, killing his stepmother and two younger siblings, for fear his parents would find out he had lied about his score on an English test.

My mom almost killed me over an 89...it gets tough for teenagers these days.

Parents want their kids to succeed. I could perfectly see how this kid did that.

I think in asian culture, or in Japan culture, parents push their kids harder than they do in the West.

Sad in our eyes. Though obviously sad in their eyes as well, considering their work ethic and the cultural implications, it's not all that uncommon that the kid might've been severely punished for low grades.

That said, he is still messed up in the head, though that might be partially due to the incredible stress the Japanese put themselves under. They're lucky they have such a decent diet or else they'd be having heart attacks by the truckload...

I wonder about the father,to put such pressure on his son.I'll bet he feels really stupid now that his family is dead.Idiot! The son will get his punishment but the father, straight to the levels of hell for him.

Depends on how the son interprets the pressure the father puts on him. If the father says stuff like "I'd like it if you got an A" or something along that caliber I don't think he is at such a fault.

Oh dear... :(

The Japanese tend to put themselves under extraordinary amounts of stress in education. In Japanese schools, if you don't pass end-of-year tests you go to work in a factory... or at least that's what I heard. Depending on how extreme the pressure was, I wouldn't be TOO harsh on the kid, since he just snapped one day. Oh... crap... :(

Though I am not from Japan, my parents come from a culture that highly emphasizes education over all else. So, in a few instances, I can relate to how he felt. It indeed, is a tragedy.

I once heard a story about a girl who became valedictorian at her school. The parents (asian) were so happy for her that they invited relatives from the other side of the world to see her being awarded. However, she got drunk at a party, and the school's no tolerance policy stated if you're caught drunk you don't get to go on stage.

She committed suicide.

Though these are rare, they aren't ENTIRELY uncommon.

Well see, at that age, 15-19 id say, which is my age to, people tend to take things to the extreme, thats why militaries and violent organizations, or terrroist, like to recruit the young because its so easy to manipulate their Idealistic minds into a weapon...:(

No, they don't to work in factories. Their parents tell them that. My parents tell me the same thing all the time:

Parents: "You want to be a farmer? I want to see at least a 90% on that Advanced Trig Mark!"
Me: "But nobody in my class has a mark that high!"
Parents: "Don't talk back to me, young man."

Parents: "You want to be a homeless man? Then keep it up, young man!"
Me: "But I have an 86% average!"
Parents: "Don't talk back to me, young man."

Parents: "Stop watching TV and start studying for school!"
Me: "But the summer just started!"
Parents: "Don't talk back to me, young man."

My scenario is daily in my life.

But I did have a girl who was from Japan in my math class last year. She was incredibly smart (despite being one year in age behind us), and she had the highest mark in our class. When we asked her about Japan (since she mentioned she came from Japan), she said she was the dumbest person in her class.

Yikes.
