Alter powers don't neccisarily come in the form of materialised objects. Kaname's alter ability allowed her to enter the hearts of those she was close to through her dreams.
That said, I so loved the Infinity 8 that I couldn't even dream of a more awesome alter than that one. I wasn't so fond of the bow he used later on, but what's not to love about those 8 treasure balls that in addition to serving as weapons and shields, also let you control other people's minds?
