Flies bother me. Filthy little bastards. Also raisins bother me. They look like wingless flies. It's like eating oatmeal fly cookies. Mosquitos are also a problem. Hang outside on a summer night and itch for the next two or three days. Also they and gnats hover in clouds just waiting to be inhaled like little suicide hijackers flying into your lungs.

Psh, boy scout daycamp was like bee stings on speed. Their were "sweat" bees everywhere and they would just land on random shit and never fly off and make no bones about stinging anything near them. They would land on watercups then stay there until you try to drink out of them and sting you on the lip. Or would land on your arm and crawl inside your shirt than sting you. That's how bad ass they were. Don't talk to me about bee stings.

Mosquitos... I'm highly allergic to them - well, that is to say I get good huge welts from every bite I get. And they LOVE me.

Spiders... Just plain phobic - no rationale, I just am terrified of them.

And right now ants annoy me becuase they've invaded my family room, but that's just an annoyance

By the way, worms, spiders and centipedes aren't insects. They are annelids, arachnids and arthropods respectively.

(Despite not being insects, some spiders are fascinating. Tarantulas, for instance. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula) I actually can't stand the small spiders that one normally finds running around the house. Tarantulas, on the other hand, are OK. I guess I'm not arachnophobic so much as I am "things with more legs than me that are hard to see"-phobic. I currently live with 10 rats (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fancy_rat), so I suppose a tarantula is just a rat with twice as many legs. :D edit: I'll make one exception in regard to my phobia described above: Orb-weaving spiders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orb-weaving_spider). Every summer, armies of them seem to come out of nowhere building all kinds of huge webs everywhere. Especially right in front of doors and in the middle of walkways. Fascinating to watch.)

Apart from that, i find wasps annoying... FOr most other insects I have a cat... she eats 'em but at the moment her speciality would have to be catching flies....
I do think I should hold a world record for the most amount of mosquito bites though, last summer i had 100 (yes, I counted and I have several people as witnesses) on just one leg..yes, just one leg (couldn't be bothered to count the rest, there were too many)...my advice, don't be out at the beach late at night/early morning:p

All I can come up with is a similar environment found in the Southwestern United States and Israel. Also, there's the association of "Jerusalem" with "Armegeddon" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armegeddon) perhaps used as a synonym for "big and scary" (I seem to also recall a class/type of nuclear weapon called "Jerusalem"), this association being encouraged by the American Judeo-Christian tradition (note that the area to which the cricket is native used to be inhabited by lots of Spanish Christians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_missions)). That's my guess, anyway.

I have an irrational fear of cockroachesSame here, except I'd probably class it as dread-terror. I don't understand it at all. I'm not afraid of any other critters, and I didn't grow up anywhere near cockroaches, so my reaction confuses the hell out of me.

It's the strangest thing. My first real exposire to them was when I was 20 or 21. Right up to that point, I would've never guessed I could possibly be scared of a few innocent-looking little beetles, but I guess that just shows how wrong one can be. I ran into a bunch in a cheap hotel room, and after a few minutes spend battling my utter terror, I ended up legging it. I've never run from anything in my life, and those little things are completely harmless..

All the same, I ended up spending a ton of money on an expensive hotel room just to get away from the damn things.

Wasps here. With most other insects or invertebrates, I can appreciate them for what they do. The common Wasp, on the other hand, seem like a pure nuisance. Nothing seems to eat it, it doesn't eat anything that isn't eaten en-masse by other animals and bees produce honey far more effectively than it. In all, it appears to me to be nothing more than a really large virus.

Seconded. Of the actual insects, I vote for mosquitos, but if we're talking about any arthropod smaller than a lobster, ticks win. I went blackberry picking in the woods near my parents' house just a few days ago, and came back with a total of 43 ticks on me. (Or, at least, I found 43 ticks on me. I was the victim of a drive-by wasping when I was a kid, so I guess I'm most bothered by wasps. A vast majority of insects bother me though.

The incessant buzzing of flies as they zip right past your ear. The seemingly purposeful intent of moths as they dive-bomb you. Little beetles that just crawl onto you and kick it until you feel them and send them flying across the room. Red ants that fall into your bra while you're on the back of a motorcycle and just bite at you until you manage to maneuver around into your shirt to pull it out...

I like spiders. I caught two once and kept them in a jar. I named one Tiny and the other I named Bob. Tiny killed Bob. Spiders are cool.

I love spiders. I definitely jump if I suddenly see one on my arm, but really they're quite amazing creatures. Anyone who's ever seen how they weave their webs can attest to what I'm saying. They can't see where they're putting their spinneret, but they can still get it to exactly the right place.

Worms, ants, and beetles are cool. Bees are annoying, but still admirable for their honey and for their excellent organization. But I said wasps were the worst. Their stings hurt quite a bit, and they're bigger and faster than bees. Also, I once had a nest of them under the eaves outside my window. That was no good.
