Which is better?

My friend and I often discuss which is better: to be the Ruler of the Nerds, or the lowest of the normal. Highest of the low, or lowest of the high. I want to see what NS thinks about this. Post why you think it's better.
I find that it's more useful being Ruler of the nerds because my nerds basically do my bidding and my dirty work when I don't feel like doing it.

Well seeing as one is Bill Gates and the other is some popular bloke down the pub, I think the question answers itself. :)

Umm... you messed up. You want highest of the low or lowest of the high. In that case, the options are Ruler of the normal, or lowest of the Nerds.

I've seen folks argue for the other, despite the obviousness of it.

Not according to popular consensus. According to Nerds, yes, but the majority finds Nerds lower because they are more anti-social.

Why does nerds = lowest?
It's unfortunate, but I go by normal standards. Nerds are lowest in social activities. Most nerds don't exactly spend their time doing the coolest of things according to the leaders of popular society.

But I'm such a good leader ...

Oh well ... usurped before I even had a chance to show off my crown.

Maybe next lifetime.

To be a nerd and quote Heinlein:

"It is better to be a live jackal than a dead lion, but it is better still to be a live lion and usually easier."

So who gives a crap.

I'd rather not classify myself into either group, instead flow freely back and forth between the two, deriving enjoyment from whatever, whenever, whereever.

Even if that were 100% true, why would that make nerds "the lowest"? Why does how cool and social you are determine your worth in this way? There's more to life; it's more complex and you can't place people in such ranks based on one or two factors.

Nerds aren't the lowest: it sounds better when you say lowest than when you say lowest above dorks, freaks, goths, etc. Poetic justice, people!!!

Be yourself, do whatever you want, be friends with whoever you want, like whatever you want. Follow your own conscience, for if it tells you something is wrong, it probably is. If anyone tells you that you must act/dress/talk/walk a certain way, steal their alcoholic delights and run. That's my creed. If one sticks to it, they will eventually find themselves enjoying far more friends and fun than if they were to confine yourself to just a tiny little social group. Life is too short to limit yourself in any silly way such as high school cliques.

I reckon so. Can't think of anyone else. We should elect an overall ruler just for the hell of it.

Ruler of nerds is better than being the lowest of the normal people but it's still nothing special. Being king of nerds is like being the lifeguard of an above ground pool.

I dunno. As ruler I have to give counsel to my nerds and they advise me on unknown subjects. We host events at different places (mostly LaserQuest), and I'm the interrelater of these messages. When someone needs stalking done, I help out for a hefty price.

But they wouldn't know, would they? Nerds are smarter than they are.

What are these 'normal' standards? What is 'normal'? Who defines "the coolest of activities"? It seems to me that the definition of a nerd is entirely subjective and dependent on what one deems to be 'cool' or 'uncool'.

What's with labelling people anyway? My girlfriend and I both read Manga and she RPs with her friends. According to some, that would make us nerds, to others that would be cool. To her and I, its 'normal', to the scumbags who stand on street corners drinking cheap cider and mugging war veterans collecting for the Poppy Appeal, what we do is weird and 'uncool'.

Normal is what's accepted by the vast majority. If nerds are the vast majority, then I'm going to find a nice cave to live in.

Don't comply.

Ruler of nerds... you rule, right? Plus, nerds get RICH later in life. Unless they become 35-year-olds who live with their moms without jobs that are on the Net all the time.

The problem with ruling is your control never passes the nerds. One clique, two if you lump in geeks.
