I just purchased an educational PC program on CD and can't get it installed.
I have Windows XP and I know that 80% of the hard drive is available. My system meets or exceeds the requirements.

I keep getting the message "there is not enough free space on this disk".

Anyone have any ideas of what I can try or do to get this thing installed?

The program is Math and Science Excelerator Grades 7-12 by Educator's Choice. Copyright 2002

It might be a bad program install.

Is the program cleared for XP?

You might check their website.....

-edit-

You might also run a disk check. The free space table might have an error.

It is possible the programmers were idiots. Create a new folder on your harddrive, call it "mathcd" or something like that and copy the full contents of the cd to that folder.
Then try to install again from that folder.

I was going to suggest that but then deleted it thinking "nah people can't be still doing that" ;)

If it's possible, try and use a different drive to install from - ie: if you have a burner, put the disk in there and try and install from there.

I think I've seen this problem before. In that incident, the trouble was that the install program determined free hard drive space in bytes as a 32 bit integer which has a maximum value of 2^32 (about 4.2 Gb). At the time my hard drive was over 10 Gb, so the free hard drive space determined by the installer was the actual free space modulus the maximum value. I worked around it by removing a program so that the remainder of free hard drive space divided by 2^32 was higher than the space required. Pretty lame.

Not sure if this is your problem, though. You could try to remove or even add some data from your hard drive and see if it works.

Hello there

Before to install your program you could clear your temp folder **** and get rid of anything you do not need on your PC.
Then re-install, all will be fine...

Good luck

****
to do that click My Computer
Right click on the disk where your Windows XP is installed
Click "Disk cleanup" and have a look around this window, many thing to clean up...

Okay, here's the problem.

Starting yesterday, when I click on any of my hard drives, instead of opening the drive my computer opens the Windows search box.

If I right-click on the icon, I can still select "Open" or "Explore" and it works normally. Everything appears to be intact, and I have noticed no other problems. Other folders open normally.

I have noticed that in the right-click menu, "Search" is listed first... and I'm not sure it was always like this. I think "Open" may have been first. Could this be the problem, and if so how do I fix it?

Now, I can usually fix most problems that occur... if not through my own knowledge, through a simple Google search. But this solution is eluding me.

Obviously, it's not a serious problem... but it can be a bit annoying.

Any ideas?

Double left click instead?

I'm pretty sure this has something to do with the fact that "Search" is now the first option in the context menu.

On all of my other folders (which work normally), "Open" is the first option... and I suspect that this defines the default behavior for left-click.

So, anyone know how to move "Open" back to the top of my hard-drive context-menu?

(Or, if you know for certain that this will not help, please tell me so I stop trying to figure it out and move on.)

2 easy steps:

1) Throw away computer

2)Get a typewriter

Type-writers can't log you into NS.

Out of curiosity, how did you fix the problem? It'd be good to know in case something similar ever befalls me or anyone else.

That is a horrible thing.

Naaah, you can easily simulate NS General on a typewriter: First, type "Jesus is teh liberal N00b". Then type "No he's NOT!!!1". Then type : "YES he IS". Repeat and type those two sentences a couple of hundred of times. Then type: "FUcK Y00 ARS3!!!!1".Then type: "No u r".
Then type: "Locked".

Out of curiosity, how did you fix the problem? It'd be good to know in case something similar ever befalls me or anyone else.Basically, I went into the registry and deleted the "Search" option from the context menu... and then re-added it.

When I added it back, it went in the proper place and everything worked fine.

Still no idea how this happened in the first place!!

Get ubuntu, it's free and when stuff doesn't work you can't find an answer unless you examine the source code.

Okay, I was going to make a whole new thread asking for computer help, but since this exists, I'm going to piggyback on this.

I've got a Mac and I use Firefox.

I never was able to link my Mail program with Hotmail and so I don't use it. However, when I click "Contact me" on websites it opens up Mail, which is a pain in the ass. Especially when I'm filling out online forms to sign up for CrewStar or something.

What I'd like to do is either get Mail to play nice with Hotmail or change the preference to launch Hotmail instead when I hit 'contact me.' I poked aroud preferences on Firefox and I can't find anything with it. I haven't tried poking on Mail's preferences but the Help function didn't get it to play nice with Hotmail.

Any help would greatly increase my life span.

I have seen several threads tonight about computer problems. So i figure that I should start a computer help thread, where you can post a problem and the nerds of NS can help!

Ill see if the mods can merge this with the other two or three computer help threads.:)

Lost cause. In order to get a mail suite (like Apple's Mail) to use hotmail, you need to dl and install a (non-free, in both meanings of the word) application to trick Mail into thinking that Hotmail is a pop email server. This app doesn't work for Mac. I don't think you can get email links to link to your hotmail. Too many security issues there, but search for an extension. You prolly won't find much, but you could end up with something that solves the problem. If you had a gmail account, this wold be an easy fix....

Well, that takes care of that...

I've had that hotmail account longer than I've had internet and I'm a bigass creature of habit. I should just move to something that plays better with others, but don't want to go through the hassle of fowarding or checking two e-mail acounts when I barely get enough real mail to justify one. Looks like this is like every computer thing I do-I do it one way until I absolutely can't anymore than begrudgingly change to something that is clearly better.

EDIT: Where the fuck are my manners? Thank you.

I don't get emails either. I just use mine to sign up for accounts and msn messenger.

I contacted the manufacturer and got the following response

Solution:

Try the following before you install the program.

Right-click on the My Computer icon.
Choose Properties. The System Properties window opens.
Click the Advanced tab.
Find the Performance group box.
Click the Settings button. The Performance Options window opens.
Click the Advanced tab.
The amount of Virtual Memory you are using is displayed near the bottom of the window.
Click the Change button. The Virtual Memory window opens, which lists each drive on the computer and how much Virtual Memory you have on each drive.
Type the number 4000 in the Custom values field (both in Initial and Maximum).
Click Set.
Click OK.
Close the windows.

It worked great.
If anyone sees anything in the setting changes that might cause me problems down the line PLEASE clue me in.

Thank you to everyone who responded.
